M1 is an old underground tram built in 1896 and in constant operation since than. Now rolling stock and extension is planned.
M2 used Soviet stock since it's opening in 1970, but was reconstructed in 2008 and the rolling stock have been changed to Alstom trains in 2012. Same kind used in M4, but drived by a driver.
M3 was opened in 1976, now it's under major recostruction (2nd phase ended last week, 3rd phase starts next week). It used a similar Soviet stock like M2, but it was modernised in 2018. Actually Metrowagonmash not recostructed the trains, but built a new ones instead, using japanese motors and parts. M3 is semi automated, the driver is in charge for closing the doors, but the metro is drive itself automaticaly from station to station. (The old Metrowagonmash stock was semi automatic too since 1976....)
M4 was opened in 2014, using Alstom trains. It is a driverless system, fully automatic. You can enjoy the view at the front or at the back of the trains. The line should be extended to the edge of the city, but there is no undergoing project to do this.
The are several suburban rail lines in Budapest, travelling mostly on the surface which has similar purpuse as metro lines. They called HÉV, and has numbers H5, H6, H7, H8, H9
H8 and H9 is planned to connect to M2, and become an extended metro line, going far beyond the city limits to Csöröm and Gödöllő.
H5 and H6/H7 is planned to be conected under the city centre and became the new M5 line. It will be an underground train rather then a traditional metro, like S-Bahn in Austria, or RER in Paris.
There are a lot of tram lines too, which have an important role in transportation, like V4/V6 which is the busiest tram line in Europe. Or the V1 which was planned as a fast tram, and operation the longest single tram cars (build by CAF) in the world. Actually V4/V6 is the second longest (build by Siemens) in the world. :-)
