    Thanks for coming along on this journey! So I stated in this video people can't convert to Hasidim (but then I corrected that in the text saying Jews can convert to Hasidim).
    But to be totally clear in my time in the community different people gave me different answers when I asked the question, "Can someone convert to Judaism, or do they have to be born into it or marry into it?" Of the roughly 10 people I asked this question, half said yes half said no. I'd love to hear from the community what is the right answer here? (my goal isn't to start an argument 😂 but I would love to find the consensus).
    And no I'm not converting to Judaism as many people have suggested. I see no problem with Judaism not accepting converts if that's the case, I'm just curious.

      Anyone can convert to Judaism, but it is not encouraged as it is not necessary and it is a difficult process. Non-Jews can simply become Noachides. They follow/believe in the Hebrew Bible however they are not obliged, or allowed to keep the Sabbath or kosher dietary laws in full.

      Anyone can convert, we just dont encourage it, because you can fulfill your destiny within your own culture. Be ethical,be kind, be good. We have a lot of structures and laws. Brings a lot of beauty, but why struggle through it, if you can go the distance without it. Definitely you CAN convert.

    Peter I know so many of us Orthodox Jews including myself have thanked you over and over again for making this series. I can tell you have tremendous humility but with that comes a lot of wisdom. In fact we have a verse in a part of the Torah called Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) “Who is wise? He learns from everyone”. I think this embodies you not just from this series but also from what I’ve read about your other series. You made some really great points in this video that many would do well to learn from namely about there being really good and really bad in every group of people, the rules in Judaism being freeing for us and finally that you can connect with people and not agree with everything. Unfortunately we do live in a world of divisiveness and echo chambers and this does prevent us really getting to know people and respecting other people.

      You should know that the bad impression I was given of the Jewish chassidic community was because I saw how awful Chabad are in Jerusalem. I spent several years in a Chabad school, they abused me and turned me atheist for a few years.

      You didn't fall out--you took a break! It happens to the best of us! And as you know, once a Jew, always a Jew! You can come back anytime, and however you want to. Everyone picks and chooses, as you know. You don't have to become carbon copies of your parents, but now that you have seen that the grass is not necessarily greener out there, which may make you appreciate the world you grew up in, or atleast the way you were raised, you may decide that as an adult, you can carve out your own space for yourself in the Orthodox world. Be it Modern Orthodox, Chabad, Satmar, whatever! And once you have kids, as they start to grow up, you really begin to understand and appreciate the value of a religious home and what it gives you and your relationships and as a family. It is ok to come back and take a look around with a new perspective. You're never going to be a tourist--and you are always welcome back home! Wherever you find your new home to be! Hatzlacha!!

    I’ve been thinking about why this culture of orthodox Jewish life is so attractive to people. You have many followers and many likes. And it got me to thinking. I think we can all admit that a certain amount of escape from the “American dream “ would be appealing. - a departure from being very materialistic and very into our technology working long hours not really knowing how to relax. You don’t need to become Jewish to hold to the same values though. And I think that was what we can learn from the series.

    @slandau100 Před 3 lety +49

    This has been an incredible series!
    As a Hasidic individual, I have seen countless documentaries and almost all of them have the same theme. Someone isn't happy within the community and is trying to escape. While those stories may be true or close enough to the truth they only portray a tiny fraction of the community life and completely ignores the vast majority of people in the community who don't wish to escape but are rather glad to be a part of it. For us, Hasidim, the mainstream, as well as Christian, Italian, Irish, etc, culture is always on display. We encounter it in everyday life. We are not puzzled by the sight of kids in costumes asking for candy from their neighbors... Whereas for the mainstream our culture is closed off and thus leaving a vacuum where people need to fill in the blanks based on personal and anecdotal stories and encounters. Our community is not the same as every other community. We are surely different. No two communities are the same. We have unique challenges, strengths, and weaknesses. In certain areas, we are more sophisticated and in certain areas, we are backdated for sure. Some by choice and some by the natural progression or regression every culture endures. I don't think that we all have to be the same? Like every individual, communities have their unique take on things. I don't believe it is a question of right and wrong. it is not a pyramid rather a spectrum of an incredible amount of tastes and colors. Just because I enjoy Starbucks doesn't mean I now must trash Dunkin or the people drinking their beverages!
    We can and should be different. But we must respect each other.
    Your series is way more nuanced than any other Documentary about Hasidim I have seen before. Thank you for that Peter.
    You became a bona fide star in our community and it is well deserved!
    Btw, you can now have your choice of hundreds, if not thousands, of Hasidic homes that will have you for a Shabbos meal. Including my home.

    I discovered this series this summer and it fascinated me. We have a Chabad Rabbi here in Jackson, Wyomingwho are such an asset to out community. I have celebrated Passover with their family and Channukah. They are so welcoming even to people like me who are not Jewish and they accept all Jewish people be they reform, conservative, or Othodox saying if someone is Jewish they are Jewish. Recently they broke ground for a synogogue and I met visiting people from New York. I must tell you Peter how respected you are among them . The orthodox are typically the warmest, it's a mitzvah (good deed) to welcome people to kiddush lunch after services on Saturday. It is the *least* observant, the most 'reform' that typically support the smearing of the orthodox, and the smearing of Jews in general. Glad you met up with them, I love that part of the country (at least during the summer).

    Their culture is so beautiful & I admire so much how they've held onto it throughout all these years-even living in Nyc doesn't shake them! My father is Puerto Rican & didn't bother to teach any of my siblings or I Spanish & it hurts me dearly that we don't know our culture not just the language but our true culture much. Everything I've learned, I taught myself. My sons father is Irish & his family is the same way. No one speaks Irish or knows anything about their culture or even history. I admire how these people stick together and have such strong family values. It's so beautiful. I was having a conversation with another mom in my city (Philly) about how torn apart many of our lives are because our village has fallen apart, that old saying "it takes a village to raise a child" has completely fallen apart for most people these days, but these people have managed to hold tight to that. ✨

    Thank you, Peter, for helping me acquire a renewed sense of appreciation and of my heritage. While I had grown up in a modern orthodox Jewish household, I had experienced my share of exposure to hypocrisy - the "do as I say and not as I do" attitude - and I developed resentment and veered away from my roots. Watching your videos, however, and "meeting" people like Shloime, gives me the opportunity to take a fresh look at how beautiful ALL people of faith truly are - especially when that faith comes from the love in our hearts. And I thank my brothers and sisters of ALL faiths for taking the time to watch this series and become acquainted with us. Love and blessings to all!

    For most of my life I have been fascinated with this world. I really did not know why, other than it being mysterious. I have wanted to just walk through the community, and try to meet, maybe ever befriend. I resisted because I did not want to offend or make anyone uncomfortable as well as me being rejected. You Peter as well as the Hasidic community have given me the virtual walk through and more. You also gave some light as to my fascination. I am Catholic, went to Catholic schools, church every week participated in all the church activities, rest and family on Sunday. Sunday was our Sabbath similar to the Hasidic Sabbath. This series taught me this is part of my fascination, they kept tradition and faith at the forefront. I admire and respect that in a growing and fast moving world, they have maintained their faith, traditions and culture. Peter please revisit often.

    From the inside (who's been out as well), I can say you got a pretty good idea, true points.
    I'm glad you realized women run the show, it's funny how the media portrays orthodox women as oppressed while inside the community they are seen as the ones who run the show, it's literally a concept in our culture as well as a value of our religion.
    Even in our humor the woman is the big scary boss..
    As a woman i actually feel more equal around the orthodox world,there is no objectifying,sexualizing. I just feel like i'm seen and heard as a person,not 'a woman' or 'the woman' which is a very common social dynamic outside of this world.
    A point that I felt was not very accurate- firstly hassidus is a spiritual path, not a denomination. I think it's important to understand that.
    Around NY the Hassidic communities are a whole lifestyle that includes social norms and different cultural aspects but that part is not Hassidus. Most religious Jews today study/practice Hassidic teachings but people don't call them Hassidic because they don't wear the garb etc.
    So it is not "born into it" and is not for Jews only. It is based on values and ideas from the Torah obviously but speaks about humans,life,values,happiness and things that make the world go round.
    How to take all those things and feel them and actaully live them on a daily basis.
    As to discipline- the Jewish idea is that there are things that will bring out the best in us, make us the best version of ourselves or will let us achieve most in a happy and successful life,actualize our potential ss a individual and as a collective,for ourselves and for the people and the world around us.
    So we try to get there and be that. It's really that simple. In today's western culture the idea of discipline or giving up instant gratification is sometimes viewed as primitive or oppressive but just like a kid needs structure in order to grow up healthy,moral etc so do we. Just like i will have to stop eating junk if i want to be healthy or athletic,if i want to be happy and wholesome i will have to do the things that will get me there and refrain from things that will be an obstacle.

      @BenEddy Před 3 lety +2

      @@dannyfarkas9127 this is literally their religion. They believe in time people will eventually come to recognize their people, community, and laws as good and see their belief in the "one G-d of Israel" as the same G-d (this word G-d is not very good as their words are more like "All that is, all that was and all that ever will be") we all are under and within... And in this time the peoples of the world and the nations of the world will look to the Jews for guidance. The Jews will have control of their homeland Israel again and will be able to give guidance to the other nations on how we should live and cooperate together. These are their end times beliefs, "The world to come". The "messiah" to them is the person who becomes king of Israel during this time when the world is ready and looking to the Jews and Israel for understanding on how to better govern and live within their own communities. This is their difference with Christianity. They believe their job here is to continue being an example unto others until the world is ready to join them and allow them to have Israel back and be a guiding people to all other of G-ds peoples. First off, thank you so much for this series on the chassidish community! Incredible work! I know you’ve been hearing this a lot, but the Jewish community, especially the Chassidic one, can use all the positive publicity it can get 😊
    Secondly, yes anyone can convert to Judaism but its a long and difficult process. Also Chassidus ( path of Hasidic people) is a branch of Judaism not a separate religion. It’s more common for ppl to convert to orthodoxy but there definitely are ppl who convert and then become chassidish. (In my community of Seattle there were two African American families who converted and became chassidic and moved to Israel. One of them is a rapper called Nissim Black who is pretty famous now)
    Hatzlacha - good luck - on whatever other series you do! Also there are MANY other types and communities of Jews and MANY MANY programs and incredible organizations that you should look into!

    Peter this was a real eye opening series. I did come in biased like most of us, but I’ve left with a much greater respect and understanding of their community. I’ve seen the Netflix series and the one off horror stories of people who left but by and large, this is a strong, principled, deeply family oriented community

    During covid, God introduced me to Rabbi Manis Friedman via his youtube videos. Rabbi Friedman saved me from the darkness that was the epidemic response. I now know God better than ever because of the Rabbi and Hassidic thinking.

    I like how you clarified that some of the community rules can be seen as 2 sides of the same coin, to some freeing and others restrictive. The beauty is finding your life purpose and a balance for both.

      I'm back. I'm thinking of something for my next video here in CA. I never thought the Hasidic world would feel free and the most "open" culture (California) would feel so restrictive on all levels.
