The characters are classified into three categories: swaras (vowels), vyanjanas (consonants) and Yogavaahakas (part vowel, part consonants).
First Thirteen letters are called as ಸ್ವರಗಳು "Swaragalu" in kannada, Vowels in english and the rest is Consonants ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು "Vyanjanagalu" in kannada. Again Consonants #Vyanjanagalu is divided into two categories namely
1) ವರ್ಗೀಯ ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು - #VargeeyVyanjanagalu - Structured consonants
2) ಅವರ್ಗೀಯ ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು - #AvargeeyaVyanjanagalu - Unstructured consonants
The following is the types and it's sub types are as follows:-
A) ಸ್ವರಗಳು 13 are Swaras (vowels) namely,
ಅ -a, ಆ-aa, ಇ-i, ಈ-I, ಉ-u, ಊ-U, ಋ-Ru, ಎ-e, ಏ-E, ಐ-i, ಒ-o, ಓ-O, ಔ-ou
B) 2 are Yogavaahakas ( partly vowel and partly consonant) comprising of
Anuswara-ಅಂ-m
Visarga- ಅಃ-H
C) 25 are ವರ್ಗೀಯ ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು Vargeeya Yanjanagalu (structured consonants) and they are
The structured consonants are classified according to where the tongue touches the palate of the mouth and are classified accordingly into five structured groups.
voiceless aspirate voiced aspirate nasal
Velars ಕ (ka) ಖ (kha) ಗ (ga) ಘ (gha) ಙ (nga)
Palatals ಚ (cha) ಛ (chha) ಜ (ja) ಝ (jha) ಞ (nya)
Retroflex ಟ (tta) ಠ (ttha) ಡ (dda) ಢ (ddha) ಣ (nna)
Dentals ತ (ta) ಥ (tha) ದ (da) ಧ (dha) ನ (na)
Labials ಪ (pa) ಫ (pha) ಬ (ba) ಭ (bha) ಮ (ma)
D)ಅವರ್ಗೀಯ ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು 9 are Avargeeya Yanjanagalu (unstructured consonants/Miscellaneous Consonants) namely
The unstructured consonants are consonants that do not fall into any of the above structures:
ಯ-ya, ರ-ra, ಲ-la, ವ-wa va ಶ-sha, ಷ - Sha, ಸ-sa, ಹ-ha, ಳ-La.

modernKannada doesn't have a consonant like zha & Ra .because modern Kannada use modern grammar and modern Kannada have some rules. this retroflex approximate is combined with La & Ra in modern Kannada . so modern Kannada drop out these consonants .but these consonants present in purvada haLegannada or old Kannada - ೞ(zha or za) and ಱ(Ra) .& old Kannada have 3 la's called rala kula kshala (rala- zha ,kula -La & kshala - kshala is slight different .because it is just Sanskrit borrowed word transformation. for eg - mangala - mangaLa ,here we can see the transformation form la to La )& all the la's gives different meaning to the words. next come to Ra or ಱ . in old Kannada have two ra's called repha & shakatarepha (ರ & ಱ) the ಱ is same Ra, and both consonants give different meaning to the words. these consonants are not used in modern Kannada but it is preserved in southern Dravidian language.
