09:37 Could They Replace X?
12:07 GiveWell
Calling Bluesky "decentralized" at the moment seems inaccurate. They claim they want to become decentralized, but until they do so it is still very much centralized.
also calling a platform run by a billionaire "billionaire proof" is a joke.
@@yuvalne It can't be bought by a Billionaire ...
@@yuvalne I want to clear up a few misconceptions about Bluesky:
Jack Dorsey does not hold a position at Bluesky, PBLLC. He has one vote on the Board of Directors. Also, the technology behind the app, the At Protocol cannot be controlled by a billionaire. It’s simply not built that way. Once Bluesky opens up to the public, they will allow non-Bluesky instances to be created and controlled by other individuals/businesses.
Unless Bluesky server admins have the power to filter out content they don't like, as well as rejecting requests from other servers
@@ahriboy there's only one Bluesky instance right now, which is Bluesky
Mastodon is not and never has been a replacement for Twitter - it's different, very good at what it want's to be, and has no intention of being a Twitter replacement
BlueSky is intended to be a Twitter replacement, but is letting people join by invite only so it grows slowly and they can block the spammers, bots, and trolls
Threads is everything wrong with Twitter ... replicated
So Reddit the reattempt?
@@GreenBlueWalkthroughnah, reddit is just a mistake.
@@GreenBlueWalkthroughLemmy/kbin is the improved version of reddit, and is compatible with Mastodon. But it has it's own issues, before Twitter and Reddit scared people away one of the biggest servers on Mastodon was a neonazi server, and one of the biggest lemmy servers is a russian propaganda server that has normal communities on it
There is something wrong with the sound, a constant bussing noise
Yeah, thought my speaker was broken. Really annoying

The title having to write "X/Twitter" really says enough about Elon's marketing sense...
Hopefully nothing. The world doesn't need another social media cesspool like the ones we already have.
Actually this X is good enough I don’t want another social account to deal with
@@dennisp8520 Yeh I approve of the way Elon is handling X really. I think it's missing the point when reports etc look at the loss in advertising revenue because I remember Elon stating he was taking it over to fix it for ideological reasons really.
@@phoooglei don't know about other things but I liked community notes feature in new Twitter. Also Twitter is sludge enough don't need other's (for now).
@@phooogle And due to his ideological reasons he turned it into an alt-right cesspool ....
Anything would be better than Twitter right now.
It's kinda funny that Bluesky wasn't supposed to be Twitter's competitor, but the platform Twitter was going to migrate to... The project was actually being on the background since 2019 (from what I've read), and the plan was to get the AT Protocol to become the place Twitter would be mounted over, in time.
Yep, Bluesky was gonna be the open-source tech that Twitter would’ve been migrated to, allowing other companies to join the network with their own services. But then Elon tweeted about buying Twitter and the rest is history.
I have bluesky account, i can say that it most likely best alternative . Specially allowing adult content .
@@thebestbenHonestly isn't it great that Twitter died though? If Musk didn't buy it, Blues toxicity would be immediate. Now that's not the case.
Tldr itself has had videos pointing out that Twitter was never the largest social media platform. So I think this video needed to do a better job explaining what "replacing X" even means
Micro-blogging is replaced; Twitter was the default, especially for breaking news although it wasn't the biggest platform in terms of active and total users.
I would prefer to go back to blogging. Having multiple sites with long blogs was fun
@@backlogbuddies those still exist
I think one important information is missed in that video. Threads plans to connect to Mastodon in the future. So that Threads acts like a Mastodon instance. That means Threads user can follow and connect with Mastodon user and Mastodon user can follow and connect with Treads user.
uuh that would be cool
@@valentinkrajzelman4649 News to that from a few hours ago: "Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company has started testing showing posts on Mastodon"
@@valentinkrajzelman4649It is a cool idea, but if too many people use Threads Meta will control the whole fediverse, and there's no point to have it decentralised then
How are they gonna moderate this tho? Threads is highly moderated with relatively strict rules, while Mastodon is basically a free 4 all.
CORRECTIONS: there absolutely IS a search function and account verification! saying otherwise is absolutely misleading!
full-text search, as well as tag based search and advaced search (e.g. "has media", "from this date" etc.) is available in every 4.2 or later instance, which includes >70% of Mastodon instances (older instances have partial search capability). so this point is plain wrong! Mastodon's search isn't any worse than Twitter's.
as for verification - there isn't centralised verification with ID because there is no centralisation, but there is website-based verification! so if you were to open a Mastodon account and add a link to it from TLDR News's website, that website would appear verified and everyone would know that that account is the same people that run TLDR, or in otherwise, that you are verified to be you.
Thank you for clarifying that. I was very surprised to hear that wrong information in that video!
There was quite a lot wrong about Threads as well…
It does have tags, although they were only globally released this week, the feature has been in public testing for at least a couple weeks.
Also, if they’re calling bluesky decentralised, then you could call threads too, given their intent on implementing activitypub and connecting with mastodon…
Such verification is not helpful for existing Twitter users, who apparently have difficulty identifying fake accounts, even knowing that each tweet displays a unique username.
Does anyone else think Jack Dorsey looks like a tall Peter Dinklage?
Twist: They're the same person, but while being Jack, he sits on the shoulders of a skinny dude.
Mastodon has search and users can self verify if they have a website, which would be typical of accounts which need it most. The discussion of Twitter alternatives seems very under researched, to the point where it makes me doubt the quality of other TLDR content where I don't happen to know something about the topic already.
++
I thought the same thing. You start questioning other videos when you see a video about the topic you know something about and you realize that the research was bad.
As the name suggests TLDR is also kinda like Wikipedia a lot of questionable info but gives u kind of an idea lol

😂😂😂 I laugh cause it's true....
Especially since Musk has identified an unmet need. Small and medium business are simply gagging to have their brands associated with conspiracy and hate groups.
Don't forget masculinity supplements.
I don't usually see sloppy research from the TLDR team, but you know how I know no one at TLDR used Mastadon?
They didn't happen to notice the GIANT FREAKING SEARCH BOX. 🤦

It feels like a strange omission to not mention tumblr, which has 135million active users. Although I doubt it would take the place of twitter.
lmao tumblr. Yea, its never going to be as big as it once was
Tumblr is a cesspool of woke toxic people. Lmao!
@@viskyboi1275 even without the userbase, tumblr is cozy
Yep, weirdly the only platform that i have tried that actually feels like it could work as an alternative that doesnt have the same issues Twitter has. (e.g. no char limit)
Everything else feels either not made for the average person or simply like it would be in an alpha for the next 2 years.
I want to correct you, mastodon does have search, hash tags, and even has a trending field. All if which are served over federation.
A hobby programmer here. It is easy to build a social media app(website) but its hard to get the users.
Another question is why there’s never been a serious competitor to Twitter before this time. Was it because twitter was so dominant, or was it because for a vast majority of its history, twitter hasn’t been profitable or desirable to replicate? It’s a loose cannon in terms of content and has a business model which is hard to make work, profit wise.
bluesky's intended path of starting invite only and then opening up to be a twitter killer reminds me of gab, so i expect it will have the same impact of only being used by a fringe.
UPDATE: Threads is already available in Europe!
*And* joining the fediverse. A lot has happened since this video was uploaded 3 days ago…
@@Tobelia It was already well known that Threads would join the fediverse at the time this video was made.
Your Mastodon user count is WAY LOW. I don't know where you got that number. It's more like 14 million users today.
Yes Mastodon has more than 14 million accounts, but TLDR is showing estimated monthly active users. 1.8 million is probably about right.
He should fix his active user chart:
~350 million Twitter/X
~10.3 million Threads
~1.8 million Mastodon
~.5 million Bluesky
The problem in this video is that he mixes the active users and total number of accounts, kind of messing with the respective scales. He mentions an estimated 10.3 million active users for Threads... but uses the 100 Million total users in his active user chart. Blue Sky is much smaller than Mastodon for both active users and total number of accounts. But by using the total number of users of Blue Sky vs active Blue Sky, he makes them look roughly the same by as Mastodon by comparing the wrong numbers.
Total number of accounts:
~1.3 billion Twitter/X
~100 million Threads
~14.5 million Mastodon
~2 million Bluesky
i'm really enjoying Mastodon at the moment, it's great
Most of these social media platforms are overrated. The bulk of tweets is shallower than a sheet a paper and it's highly likely that only the poster will think it's of interest to the world.
Hopefully Bluesky opens up since threads is full of the most boring generic people. Twitter is slowly becoming 4chan 2 amd its sad there isnt a good enough competitor.
It’s sad you hate free speech
Why would there have to be a replacement? When a doctor cures cancer they don't start looking for something to replace it.
You do not understand how cancer works. There is no cure for cancer, just remedies to "delay" the inevitable. Oxidation reactions inside the cell can cause cancer by accident, which is normal.
And, about the social media talking... Remember when Tumblr changed its policies back in 2019? Everyone was after Twitter for that reason.
For Threads, I'm wondering if the endgame plan from Meta is not to steal enough people from X to hurt their already poor finance even if Threads loses money.
During that time, they can improve their plateform little by little and you might have a mature plateform ready to welcome X users when it's inevitably falls at which point they can start to think about benefits.
I'm thinking that X will be bought again and renamed back to twitter lol. It'll get sold for pennies on the dollar after elon makes a big show about it. But then again, what platform is he going to go to for massaging his massive ego by yes men?
Never going to work Instagram is totally the wrong platform to steal twitter users.
Also a member’s Mastodon timeline is *determined* by follows of people, groups or hash tags. You all really dropped the ball on your research.
2:25 To emphasize how bad it was, the tweet Elon replied to was itself a reply to a tweet literally asking for people who think "Hitler was right" to stop hiding behind anonymity and put their name to what they think.
So on the one hand maybe Elon doesn't check the context of tweets he replies to. On the other, /maybe he does/
Won't be too long until countries offer their own Twitters.
Judging from the massive failure of threads it’s clear no platform will replace X, the advertisers are already returning and the domain is the fifth most popular in the world
Yeah this video left out a lot of information. I'm sure it wasn't deliberate lmao.
Thanks for the video
None - Twitter - X is just having an enormous comeback ..
Mastodon and the rest of the "fediverse" don't stand a chance in replacing twitter. If a seasoned tech enthusiast like me has trouble figuring out how the decentralized network works, there is no way a normie will ever give it a shot. It'll probably stick around as a niche internet community, but not as a mainstream competitor.
One thing's for sure - it's impossible to be a good person and be a Twitter Blue subscriber.
Mastodon is NOT TWITTER and never should be. Twitter or X has always been everything wrong with social media. Mastodon has worked hard to prevent that and that is the reason its smaller but more respected when you actually want to have a thoughtful conversion vs being called a racist or anything under the sun for exploring important ideas.
Honestly Theads sounds like a nice place for creatives to post about their work and connect with each other... Which is one of the biggest reasons people use X at all.
I've always said the only chance is for a billion-dollar company to back a replacement or for a startup to do it WITH VC funding. Only Threads fits one of those criteria. I'm absolutely rooting for it, but it needs community features like trending topics and DMs.
I think more than just naming one of the Fediverse platforms (Mastodon here), it would have been more accurate to talk about the many platforms that Mastodon can mutually communicate to, like Pleroma, Pixelfed, Misskey, etc. As they have the ability to built its feed wih users across these platforms (like how Pleroma users and Misskey users can show up on Mastodon and vice-versa), making the whole group, surely only merely more potent than what is presented on the graph, but still presenting what can be a good alternative to networks on a rivalry with each other.
That being said, the video still retains a good point: even if we took the conglomerated Fediverse in comparison, Twitter is still miles away in terms of userbase volume despite decaying a bunch by its poor decisions and management. More than new challengers in my opinion, it would take fatal mistakes on X's part for a better platform concurrency to be restored.
Wait Jack Dorsey started a company to compete with X? Did they not have the brains to have him sign a non-compete agreement when he left as CEO?
He was not ceo at the time. It was that no name guy from india who loves to censor people.
Just a note that Threads does have tags now. I forget what they’re calling them but thought I would ad that detail here.
Good video, but it didn’t mention that Threads is working to make their service compatible with mastodon. So that’s a combined service (eventually).
Elon Musk didn’t tell “all advertisers” to go f themselves… only the ones that were trying to assert influence of what he can and cannot say.
Sure, those evil evil advertisers who don't want their ads to appear next to Nazi propaganda, conspiracy theorists and alt-right bs ... Damn, just how naive are you?
I fail understand the argument that Mastodon won't succeed because it doesn't want advertisers. Usually, ads follow users, not the other way around; so I don't think a lack of advertisers is a problem in any way. In fact, I'd consider that a pretty big advantage for users, if only because they won't be the product. Conversely, the presence of advertisers on other platforms, and the monetization of user data by the makers of these platforms, are huge deterrents for a growing number of people who realize the inherent risk to all this, especially when government-business collusion peaks new records every year that passes.
What did I miss in your video?
I don't want to be the one who says it but Threads won't replace twitter unless is much less censored (allows sensible content +18), have a trends option and let you login without your IG account.
none of these alternatives are going to replace x becuase non of them support nsfw content, people don't want to admit it but they are a major driving factor for x's success.
there are mastodon instances for that
I believe mastodon and bluesky do, which is also why I know they both have a large furry comunity...
Cartelion could replace X
Cartelion is great
Im one year on Cartelion, Im not shure if Cartelion is a direct replacement of X, it is more a replacement for Facebook.
If those big companies stop advertising does it mean there is less ads on X right now or other companies took those slots?
If they left because they worried X will damage their reputation then how are things right now for companies that stayed? Did any of them got cancelled already or at least you think less of them because they are still there?
X currently has about 90% junk advertisement, meaning advertisement with no established brand behind it. compared to CZcams where the ratio of junk seems to vary between 10% and 40%. Some classic big spenders seem to have dialed down online advertisement across all platforms. But it makes a better press release if you talk about specifically avoiding X.
Threads finally got Topics, so now Threads can really be the new Twitter. Until now it was kinda useless without the Hashtags, but now we can have Hashtags (just one epr thread though) and use it properly.
Blue Sky has possibilities to become BS meme
Bluesky should change its name and logo. Threads and Mastodon UI are beautiful
0:33
I bet you guys were so excited to be able to make this quote.
5:40 Hopefully, they give priority to genuine engagement from real individuals, allowing brands to tailor their marketing strategies accordingly.
Threads once it has a lot of depth in features will still threaten Twitter especially when users migrate to it as they are sick of being rate limited.
People migrate and leave. A bunch of company and generic posts.
10:24 Yo that screenshot of Mastodon UI tho 😅
Isn't Threads supposed to be part of the Mastodon network?
Yea nah they wont.
Mastodon isn’t a social media, it is social networking
The Nostr protocol will be truly decentralized, where users actually control their data. Perfect for bitcoiners…

I'm rooting for Mastodon. not only does its decentralized nature save it from the ever looming threat of the enshittification that killed Twitter, but it's the most feature-full alternative, is the second largest after Threads even without counting the whole Fediverse ecosystem, and is the oldest and most mature of them. plus, it doesn't spy on you.
Mastodon is obscure for new users. It requires too much knowledge before even getting started. People will never bother to learn enough to even start using the platform.

Do you mean hopefully twitter's competitors can't take off?
@@davidjennings2179 ideally lol. Lets just keep the world simple with one big public square social media. Theres already 5 too many.
@@ryanhileman3757 interesting. What makes you feel like one having a monopoly is better than having many different ones?
@@davidjennings2179its not that its a monopoly that makes it better. Its just i dont think social media in general is healthy, and having many of them does 2 things. 1. Isolate people into progressively worse echo chambers as now entire platforms are dedicated to that demographic (view trumps truth network), and 2. Split our already damaged attentionspan between multiple apps sucking up even more time.
@@ryanhileman3757 Don't get me wrong, there is a tonne wrong with social media - I agree with you there - but monopolies don't feel any pressure to improve if they don't feel their customers have an alternative. Ideally they always feel someone is snapping at their heels and need to get better. Echo chambers are terrible but I'm not sure they're really avoidable either - things like trump social are worse, certainly, but people will always find a way to create spaces like that whether it's a Masterdon server or the corner of their local pub if people don't want to hear the opinions of anyone who disagrees they'll make it happen.
I just love how causally nonchalant British people use the f - bomb.😂😂😂
I am so grateful that I don’t use Twitter.
Mastodon is my favorite one, I like the idea that no one owns them. Ads may be important to support the creator of the App, but it's ok in Mastodon cause no one owns them unlike literary all other platform in this video, which also mean there's no distraction for users. And it having alot of community like Reddit and Amino, but having all community connected so not needing to join multiple means you won't leave out your friend for joining a community they are not into, and some can also join a community that has a rules they like more too. Lol XD
At the moment, Mastodon feel like the most community-driven and the more freedom, which is why Mastodon is my favorite. Lol XD
I don't think open-source automatically make the app good, even more so if it ended up being very complicated for casual people to use in order to become open-source, but if it's both that good and open-source and not all that complicated for casual people to even start using the app then AWESOME! That's why I like Mastodon so much. Don't get me wrong, it is abit more complicated than Twitter but mostly because it had things I never experienced in Twitter before such as a community system like Reddit but with all community connected, not because there's some coding involved like Linux. So it was easy to get used to it after I started using Mastodon. Lol XD
Not Threads launching in Europe a day after TLDR said it's not available due to strict data laws ☠
So it is true that these companies are blackmailing X Twitter . Hmm
Hmm, I think that the analysis in this video is incomplete, either intentionally or through poor research. For example the video mentions 'profit' many times, yet only talks about revenue. Whilst Twitter/X under Musk has poorer ad revenue, reduction in staffing costs and also infrastructure costs are not accounted for or even mentioned. Musk had set a target for a $1B saving in infrastructure costs, perhaps this should have been investigated or at least mentioned, if not then just stick to Ad-revenue as your metric rather than 'Profitability'. Secondly, many may see your reporting of a decrease in active users as an implication that these are humans leaving the platform through some sort of protest. Remember, part of the issues of the takeover was the large number of bot accounts that had been mis-reported by the previous board. Musk has a published objective of reducing bots; he has removed 3rd party apps and api access to X. This will have reduced bot presence on the platform, to what extent would have been an interesting angle, but no, this was not mentioned at all.
I agree, but it's pretty clear they never intended to do an actual unbias analysis of the situation. They are just milking views from Elon's name.
That's complete nonsense. There are more bots than ever on "X". It was also not an "issue of the takeover", the issue was that Musk tried to find a way out and he needed an excuse. I don't understand how anyone could be gullible enough to believe Musk's lies.
Reducing the staff is a meaningless gesture when you don't have ad revenue. Don't try to pretend that even firing everyone would make up more than a tiny and forgettable fraction of the money that Musk lost due to his antics in ad revenue.
You're just a naive Musk simp.
@@JulienDLauriers That's quite an unbiased analysis. Of course, Musk simps get angry when other people don't praise their daddy.
Shame that there was no mention of nostr in this.
The app just launched today in the EU
X is so ahead of its rival that there is no true rival.
Mastodon: Twitter for people who love Statism. Which is the very ironic.
Twitter just should disappear without replacement.
It's about the message.
5:36 Twitter isn't a news source, not sure how to characterize it, but not news and I won't touch it.
Bluesky is to me the one most set to fail, mastadon works by appealing to subcutures and interest groups. Threads obv has Meta behind it and thus can exisit. But Bluesky just feels pretentious
Anything but facebook please!
Any of these apps, or one we haven't heard of yet, can take over for X-Twitter. I think it's also still possible that Twitter will take over for 'X' (formally known as Twitter). It's still possible that Musk will f off one day, due to a variety of possible reasons, and whomever takes over reverts it back to what it was. Then there will be a mass return to the platform. If Musk drives the platform into the ground someone can buy it for a fraction of it's current value, restore the app to a previous version, then sell it for billions.
Musk himself could decide to revert to Twitter branding… he’s not afraid of admitting his mistakes.

reddit isn't an alternative to twitter tho, it's an entirely different structure.
Twitter is a blogging website, Reddit is a forum website
Lemmy and Kbin are Mastodon compatible alternatives to Reddit then again. But they don't have all the interesting communities that Reddit has
I was never a twitter fan but I do enjoy Blue sky
How aboUt discord?
None of these options really seem all that appealing to me.
What made Twitter, Twitter was it's instant access to public figures, like reporters, pundits, bloggers and local sports radio hosts. And by extension, a whole ecosystem of people who share similar interest. You would join Twitter to get the real time opinions of your local sports talk host and you would stay on Twitter because you discovered a Buffalo Bills podcaster who is really inciteful. You used to be able to see pundits going back and forth debating positions. Now it feels like a ghost town.
None of these alternatives seem like they have that element to them. Mastodon and Threads seem more like Reddit competitors then Twitter competitors and I'm already on Reddit. In fact I am increasingly using Reddit since Musk bought Twitter.
Feels like there is an opening for legacy media to pool resources to at least play kingmaker.
What has Musk done to Twitter that makes you use it less?
Mastodon seems to have the most amount of interesting journalists, but they still prefer posting on Twitter exclusively. And I don't see governments moving to Mastodon anytime soon, although it could be pretty perfect to have a Government instance with only agency accounts that is linked to the official agency websites

5. reading the replies to these tweets is now way more difficult, especially due to these bot farms.

Yes fomo cause most don't allow themselves to go deeper than that. Peace.
As someone who has used all four. I think Bluesky has the better chance. It's basically twitter again and works fine. It lacks some features but it's still a closed beta so I don't mind it. It feels the most familiar to Twitter while the others don't. Threads is only algorithm based, something not even Twitter was (it still and has always let you use chronological timeline), and it feels full of people who hates the internet in a way? Plus it's owned by Meta and it works terribly in the EU even with a VPN, it's yet another thing Instagram tries to copy and doesn't fully do it. Mastodon is the one that actually feels like tech people, not Bluesky from my experience over the months, a hive mind of tech people who can't accept things can be improved, if you criticise Mastodon they tell you to just find a new instance, so many instances, all with different rules and UI, i hate it.
Mastodon is not a Twitter replacement, but then it never was intended to be, If you only saw tech people complaining about twitter, that was just the instance you were on, the advice to pick another one was valid - it's very closed, and group centric ..
Twitter may go the way of the hyperloop.
I'm done with social media no new one will take my fancy unless there's hard guarantees of no data harvesting, otherwise they can all get to f***
Certain people will never move to platforms with less freedom of expression. Other platforms that are not as free speech oriented will become echo chambers moderated by people who think men can breastfeed.
Ah yes the free speech to be a hateful bigot, I love that freedumb. Maybe one day you’ll be a real human with morals and realize why bigots aren’t human.
This.
Omitting the differences freedom of expression has on content makes me wonder what other blind spots the folks at TLDR aren’t interested in reporting on.
This whole video is rather lousy journalism given the Missouri v Biden case still making its way through the courts.
X isn't free-speech oriented at all.
X promotes far right tweets, and hides normal tweets. That's not free speech. And they have had to ban accounts despite Musk saying they wouldn't because a social platform has to be regulated by someone, but yes I don't like that it's a tech company doing it either. And the government would do a much worse job
Follow the furries that run the whole Internet.
They went to BlueSky.
The dreamers 😅
