When he was at the Cannes film Festival, I actually spoke to him on the phone. My brother-in-law worked as a bodyguard and he quickly became a friend. I awkwardly tried to tell him that I loved him and that his performance in Bronson was awesome and he replied to me in French (that was unbelievable). That guy's fucking awesome.

He probably speaks it well, it is just when people put you on the spot and you haven't spoken it a while it can be difficult. Then there are native speakers who will criticize you because you can't speak it perfectly. English is my native language mais je peux bien comprendre la langue mais c'est difficile de la parler. So I understand- it sounded great from what I heard.

I think a lot of Brits have a rudimentary knowledge of French. It's not uncommon for them to cross the English channel for a holiday. Fluent speakers might be harder to find. Once your in Europe though... I'm told most Europeans are decent at speaking 2 languages. One of my family friends is Swiss German, she speaks 6 or 7 languages. I think it just comes with the territory.

Most people in my family speak 3 or 4 languages fluently. Usually dutch, german, english and portuguese. I wouldn't say that every european speaks this much, but most do indeed speak at least 2 languages.
