imma be real, when we still believed in the "unaltered clone"-thing i thought they were just streightup gonna harvest Omega's eggs. Clone Wars and Bad Batch are sort of a little iffy on the timelines; always feels like the war lasted two or three times it actually did so i'm not necessarily against the idea that she was a fail safe plan in case / after Jango died. We know they were running out of his genetic material (how's that even happen, did nobody pack Fett's body?) and they were pretty convinced the clone contract would keep going. Sooooo what'cha do, clone a clone? Nah. You clone a female version *once* and get some stable genetics down the line.

I don't have a genetics background, but my initial assumption based on what we know of lore so far is that female clones are just an accident that happens sometimes as the kaminoans figure out how humans work. Omega and Emmerrie are still around since Nala Se and Doctor Hemlock pulled them aside to work as lab assistants, but the rest...
Considering the kaminoans would kill off entire batches for simply having the wrong hair or eye color, they'd probably do the same for clones of the wrong sex and not think any further. They'd probably see additional female clones as imperfect products in need of purging in the growth chambers.

Not only would the donor's genome interfere with the Fett DNA, female Fett clone donor eggs would replicate the Fett DNA causing massive problems. DNA going through this process would turn beneficial parts of the DNA into detrimental expressions. It's essentially super-incest.
The problem is that you're applying real life "cloning" strategies to the science fiction of true cloning. More than likely the Kaminoans are working directly with DNA through artificial neutral templates than following sexual reproduction like our scientists have done.

more over they are likely removing the genetic data from the nucleus of the cell and substituting it with the cloned dna from Jango and just using the eggs for its cellular machinery. otherwise you could not ensure an exact genetic clone. the process that produces eggs and sperm randomizes the genetic material. thus getting a child that is an exact clone of jango would extremely dependent on luck. just considering a single chromosome pair you could produce 3 different combinations. now multiple that across another 21 chromosomes and the number of potential variants from the original sky rocket.

I just figure Emerie and Omega were made female in order to hide the fact that they were clones. With Omega, they took the extra step of altering her hair color, so the Kaminoans really wanted to hide her, probably because they were experimenting with Jango's DNA in ways he didn't agree to, and they probably didn't want the Republic to know about all their experiments either.
Omega, who is pretty perceptive and observant, had to be told Emerie was a clone. Tech was the only one to realize Omega was a clone. But yeah, it's also possible they harvested Emerie's eggs, which creates an odd family dynamic here.

Regarding the segment that starts at 8:36, it's really incredible how confident people can be when they espouse a theory that's explicitly contradicted by the actual lore. In "Identity Crisis", Dr. Hemlock clearly explains that the goal of Project Necromancer was to create a Clone whose blood could absorb Midiclorians from blood drawn from force-sensitives. Like; the show explicitly calls it M-count *transfer* and *not* M-count cloning.

I'm under the impression that Emerie Karr was a precursor to Omega. Emerie was supposed to be the test to see if Jango Fett's DNA could hold a stable M-count to be transferred, I'd assume that they gave Emerie accelerated growth to see if that would have an effect on the quality of her M-count (like maybe to test if the stability of the M-count would be affected by puberty and if that doner could continue being effective after adulthood).
Emerie was most likely a failure when it came to what Nala Se was trying to accomplish but she took what she learned from Emerie and perfected the process with Omega which is why Nala Se designated Omega the "template" for future clone troopers once Jango's DNA was completely diminished- labeling Omega would be a good cover for what her purpose really was. Emerie was discarded to work as a scientist as the Kaminoans wouldn't have let her be a soldier even if that's what she wanted and I think that why it feels like she has a little resentment against Nala Se and why she holds Dr. Hemlock in such high regard. while Emerie was developing, Nala Se most likely treated her just as she treated Omega and when Emerie could no longer be useful to what Nala Se was trying to accomplish she was discarded and I think that's another reason why Emerie started out very distant as she was treated like an experiment and thrown away when she didn't meet expectations.

This is basically the impression that I got from the show, too. At the very start of the show, Nala Se says that five (Omega and the original Batch) are "all that remain" of her enhanced clones. She likely made lots of others, but they were the only ones whose enhancements worked, so they were the only ones that survived. Emerie being "discarded" may have even meant she was supposed to die, but Hemlock saved her at some point while working with Nala Se, since it is implied that Hemlock and Nala Se have some kind of professional history together.

Female clones could be due to simple random (unintentional) mutations. IRL, human are born with a few dozen de novo mutations, something like 42 on average.
There are several ways individuals with XY chromosomes can develop into females. For example, androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is relatively simple... lots of different mutations in the androgen receptor gene can break it, so that ends up being fairly common (around 1/20K humans).
You would also get some random variation in the chromosome counts. This happens IRL too, for example Down's Syndrome is usually caused by getting 3 copies of chromosome 21. There are folks in our world with a single X chromsome, XX, XY, XXY, ect. Turner syndrome (a single X chromosome) can have symptoms so mild that folks live their whole lives without noticing they have it.
Of course, the cloning process in SW could increase the chances of random mutations and make it even more common.
Then there is the whole developmental process. Early in development, lots of genes and pathways are flipping on and off, often depending on particulars of the environment. There are tons of ways things can not go 'typically'. And different secondary sexual characteristics develop at different times.
On the M-counts thing... There is no "female only genome"... well, sort of. Mitochondria (the things in cells which make ATP molecules) have their own genomes and are inherited from the egg (with very rare exceptions). Other than making ATP, mitochondria really don't do much else though. Maybe in SW, the 'midichlorians' are organelles which have their own genomes too... It seems likely that Lucas was stealing/riffing off of Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" (1962) where mitochondria have basically magical properties. If that is the case, then they would be (mostly) maternally inherited (or from the egg when cloning).
ETA: Apologies for the pedantic wall of text... I'm a biologist and hopefully educational info dumping sort of part of the job description ;)

    @sireoslee2202 Před měsícem +15

Could have also been that Omega was intentional, Emerie was not.
Jengo Fett asked for an unaltered clone as payment since he wanted a child. He might have ASSUMED the clone would be male. He didn't expect the Kaminoans to show off and create an option: Boy (Boba) OR Girl (Omega). Jengo picked the boy ... Nala Se chose to take the girl (heck, she may technically be Boba and Omega's mother/creator, hence her own investment in Omega).
As for Emerie .... the cloning project was massive. IF you think about semi-conductor industry where you can produce millions of a chip resistor or chip capacitor, you want like only 1 or 2 defects per million. Any more, and you have a problem.
In cloning Jengo Fett, if this was their first time cloning humans AND on this scale ... there is a chance that there may have been spontaneous "errors" that led to defects, such as Clone 99 (negatively). The mutation into a female may have been 1 n 10000, 100000 or 1000000 ... and as the project progressed, that particular error may have been phased out as the Kaminoans became more familiar with the Human and Fett sample. Similarly, the accelerated aging may have only been intended for male Fett clones, so any female clones that were created ... might have simply not survived the process. Either way, Emerie was lucky to have survived.
The Kaminoans could have also created several dozen female clones in the first batch of clones. Unlike their male counterparts, the females may have had higher aptitudes for non-combat roles. But in order to fulfill the intent of the original order, the Kaminoans proceeded with the females in combat training ... and something along the lines of an accident or incident nearly wiped out the female clone troopers. Emerie and a few others may have been sole survivors at a very young age (especially if she was part of a second batch.) and all of them were shifted to support or research roles. Of course, with the horrible attrition of war, the female Fett clones were thrust into combat (combat medics, nurses, doctors, etc) even though there were so few of them. But ships were destroyed, transport craft and fighters lost, and planets fell to the Confederation. Emerie might not have seen any of her remaining sisters since before the war ... and she wouldn't see them once the war ended. This might have been one more reason why Dr. Hemlock took her in ... as much as she had the Fett dedication to getting things done ... she was a novelty or a last of her kind/model.

You can lose most of your males then reproduce the whole population in a single generation. In real life genetic research looking out our ancestry there was a point where the reproductive average was 1 male to 17 females most like that tribe lost most of it's males to war or hunting or something.

Lately, I’m not totally convinced that Omega is unaltered. The pale blonde hair, the kind disposition, her empathy, her strategic aptitude, and this ability to accept high M-count donor blood; all point to some tampering with her genes.
If anything, Emerie Karr is the more unaltered of the two, with the only really noticeable exception being that Omega had no age acceleration done to her.

The blond hair is the one thing that is clearly, obviously altered--whether intentionally by the scientists or some kind of error in the lab--and it's very weird to me that no one in the entire show has ever mentioned it. And the M-count transfer thing is mysterious, particularly since Nala Se seemed to know about it. But strategic aptitude seems shared by all of the clones, and the empathy and kindness could be due to her being raised by Nala Se; there is a genetic component to these personality traits, but environmental influences seem much more important, there's no reason Jango himself couldn't have been empathetic and kind in some kind of alternate timeline.

    • @TimberlakeTigerGirl

I think when they say unaltered it's referring to her not having growth acceleration like the others. As for the M count; that is probably just some force mumbo jumbo that was beyond anyone's control.

It’s true that kindness and empathy are not purely genetic, but it would be naive of us to assume that it’s always 100% the way someone was raised, especially in Omega’s case. The Kaminoans, Nala Se included, exhibit very little empathy, kindness or nurturing disposition. While, yes, Nala Se has been _more_ nurturing to Omega than is typical for Kaminoans, based just on what we’ve seen, it’s not nearly enough to account for Omega’s personality. Very good. I've been talking about this from the first episode on the Bad Batch. One thing everyone misses is that chromosomes contain errors (at least in this galaxy) so you can't just take the same X chromosome and duplicate it to make a female clone. You get the same bad results as incest. The mutations match up. We have two of every chromosome, except Y, so there is a miss match created to cancel out the mutations.
They need another female donor. Omega is about 12 so she's cloned early in the clone wars, about 31BBY, a year after the battles on Naboo. The available donor would need to be someone Sheev Palpatine respects and 'trusts'. That would be Padmé Amidala Naberrie. There is a female Fett available, Jango's older sister, last seen on Mandalore in an insane asylum's. Padme is a better option. An organizer, diplomate, healer (she was in the medical service before joining the government office). She's also handy in a fight. She has the genes they need. Jango is the warrior template but they also need a medical corps for the clone army. In the post war period the Republic would need a person to rebuild and that needs to be a diplomate healer not a warrior. So whether its a Kaminoans project the emperor did not fully know about or part of his plan does not matter, the female clone with both Jango's DNA and a dash of Padme's DNA fits the bill.
Yet there is another variable: "the force is strong in the family" and that has too mean Padme had a little force potential. That passed on to Luke and Leia but it also went to Omega. She's not a force user but the trait Hemlock seeks comes from the mothers side of the family but only Nala Se would know that.

the thing is, everybody is saying that Omega is force sensetive because she has a high M count....but that is NOT the case. Her blood has the abillity to recive Mediclorients, without degrading! We all know that his son, who is the father of Ray will be in the picture in some time. I think the direct cloning of Palpatin himself is way off at this stage.

Female is the “default”. (I am in no way a scientist. I’m an engineer, I just remember the spark notes of this phenomenon from high school). So due to that, a female clone is easily explained. As for why? Well… an accident, for one. But more likely they were for specific purposes. So I'm not watching the video Yet because SPOILERS, but I just want to say that it is theoretically possible to get a fenotypical woman from a genetic male by disabeling the Y chromosome. Which I've always assumed is happening to the clones. I remember it from one of my biology textsbooks from study. Anyhows, hopefully I'll be back to watch this soon!

I think they were paid up front, I mean, it doesn't make sense to take payment on delivery when you don't only make them but also raise them.

If they had cloned multiple individuals to support specialist production lines or in order to introduce a level of genetic diversity to mitigate risks such as susceptibility to particular diseases (natural or engineered), that would make sense.

Im pretty sure that it was only done to tweak around genetics in the attempt to make a force sensitive clone. Which Omega apparently is now.

if you just consider the movies i agree the kaminoians are weird for this, but remember they were working with dooku who wanted this to be a secret. its not unusual to not call the client when jango fett is on station to handle that, he probably just told them he was relaying orders for the republic and not to contact the republic through anyone but him. the sith went to great legnths to keep the army hidden, it would only make sense for them to have a way to keep the cloners from becoming suspicious. or they knew the whole time and didnt tell because they aligned with dooku.

I've wondered this since Omega first appeared. I've suspected that it may be as simple as using two identical X chromosomes (either by accident or intentionally) to create a female clone. I've tried to find any chromosomal abnormalities that may cause but came up short on info because I guess we don't really see that in our world (we get an X from our mothers and either an X or Y from our fathers, two genetically different people). I assume Omega would pick up any X related genetic traits from Jango, including colorblindness if he had that.

A part of the clone army that may often be overlooked in essays like this is very simple: it’s part of a fictional story. Sometimes the reason is a justification for something cool to happen.
In my writing, I say that female clones are just more stable than males, could be on the same train of thought

Maybe they just wanted to give the males some female companionship and made them some females. One thing I really look forward to is Boba & Omega meeting maybe somehow able to sense there related

Omega was definitely a pet project for nala. She probably just wanted something she could keep close and socialize with beyond the rotating staff and "oh no you see this is part ofca long term research project" makes for a good excuse. Beyond that the rest are probably just made out of utility female clones aren't immediately identified as clones by the males so they don't try to socialize with them and if the do the male would just consider them defects because they are different which makes them a great research asset to replace the dwindling staff to interact with the clones.

I want to point out that we've seen mutations in clones before, unplanned mutations. In The Clone Wars series, we've seen a clone instructor with hair-loss, and another with the sides of his hair gone grey, even though they both would have physically been in their 20's. Though for all we know, those 2 examples are related to combat stress.
Then of course, there's the OG 99.
So with that in mind, I always assumed Omega's gender was simply the result of an unplanned mutation, and she got relegated to a non-combat role. Perhaps she wasn't the only one.

There is a very personal connection between Omega and NaLasé, if you notice the pendant on NaLasé’s head is also on Omega’s head sometimes, it is on this video if you go back, possibly Omega was created by NaLasé for storing more raw DNA? The M count that Palpatine so much desire that he had bounty hunters all over the galaxy to search for force sensitives, and only had what 3 then 4 with the baby and lastly Omega but that was their ultimate mistake because Omega was trained by the Bad Batch, Hemlock underestimated Omega just as Palpatine underestimated Luke Skywalker (The real Luke not Woke Luke)

fun fact, there is infact gene marker that gets passed down from father to son and mother to daughter (i forget which but one of them also passes it the opposite sex, i think it was mother).
so genetically speaking it is possible for a special gene to only be passable through mothers

heres what i said from bad batch episode #1....if Omega is supposed to be an unaltered clone of Jango fett, like Boba, then someone in the kaminoan cloning crew needs sacking, because jango was male. Making a female clone of him requires altering his chomosones from male to female, thus, Omega is not unaltered.

judging how many eggs they would need to create the army - them making some clones to get the eggs would make a lot of sense - but then there is the question if the kamiinoans would want to wait enough time fot these female clones to mature to get their eggs - which would most likely take years - years of stalling the project without the eggs in the mean time. Unless they found a way to shorten that up - because they would not need the female hosts to develop mentally but rather physically (kinda dark) to get the eggs so maybe they accelerated their development even more than the normal male clones say like a factor of 3 or 5. that way they would need only around 3 years of clone growth to get a mature female clone ready for harvesting (still kinda dark though) but i doubt kaminoans would batt an eye over this.
