  • Ben describes his experiences over the first 7 days of wearing Varifocal lens glasses for the very first time. Varifocal Glasses, also known as varifocals, varifocal lenses or progressive lenses, have a gradual change in strength from the top of the lens to the bottom with multiple focal points allowing you to see all distances and focus points through just one lens. If you've only worn single lens glasses then they can take some time to adjust to them.

    I took my varifocals back after 2 and a half weeks. My vision was terrible, couldn't really focus on anything properly and gave me bad motion sickness. I've gone back to single vision and it feels so much better. My mum has varifocals and swears by them but I don't think they're for everyone

    In order to see things at close viewing distances, the muscles in our eye change the shape of the lens behind the cornea to focus the image on the retina. When these muscles are fully relaxed, we generally focus at infinity or just beyond and therefore everything in the distance will be in focus. As we age, the crystalline lens in the eye hardens and the muscles that control it also weaken, this happens to everyone to some degree or another and starts to become more apparent after about age 40. In order to help the eye focus at closer distances, a convex or plus lens is used to artificially converge the rays of light and bring them closer to the retina - this is how reading glasses work. If you already have a refractive error with your distance vision, you need more than one corrective solution. Either, you have a pair of glasses for each task or, you use a varifocal or progressive lens to try and achieve comfortable viewing in most scenarios.

    I'm 56 and never worn glasses before but noticed certain issues...when needing better sight when dealing with small surgical instrumentation as I'm a theatre scrub nurse, so cannot take reading glasses on and off when scrubbed, so went for varifocals straight away.

    • @biggur5
      @biggur5 Před 2 lety

      @@annaali455 that's one of the classic effects of varifocals. The brain adapts to it over time.
      The next question asked when I say that is "how long will it take?".... it can upto 1 month. If you're still experiencing problems then I would recommend you go back to where they were dispensed from and let them know the difficulties you're having. They should check the glasses to make sure all the measurements were correct and then take it up from there. They may suggest another type of varifocals. Some have less distortion but tend to cost more.
      Only a very small proportion of people simply cannot adapt to varifocals.
      Just persevere and hopefully in a few days you'll forget you're wearing them (but try and wear them as much as you can even if you feel you dont need to... gives the eye/brain time to adapt)

    • @BenPaton81
      @BenPaton81  Před 4 lety +4

      Yeah I would just jump in. You don't want to be on off with reading glasses as that sounds like a hassle. Now at the time of writing this comment it's now two months on since I made this review and honestly I forget they're varifocals now, they're just my glasses if that makes sense any initial teething issues of the first couple of weeks has gone and I forget they are any different to previous glasses I've had. The adjustment period was definitely longer but you just need to stick with it and eventually you'll forget they're varifocals. No headaches either so they're definitely an improvement on my last pair.

    Hi there - any update how you're getting on with them. I am on day 1 and really not liking them one bit. My near vision i thought was pretty good, no headaches no nothibng. But distance vision - the contrast much better with glasses. Optician said I need varifocals - did not quiz further. But I dont like them one bit - world looks distorted and I find doing near stuff like reading a book or laptop work a lot better WITHOUT them if I am honest. I am therefore wondering if they got my prescription wrong as without them, my near vision is just as good. But with varifocals, I really don't like the warped view of the world. I looked at two tables next to each other in a cafe today and when i move my head side to side, they dance up and down! It's awful. Would I have been better off with bifocals. I decided to get the best elite varifocals - but i cannot see what is so elite about them. Wish I had asked more of the optician too but they make you feel they have limited time.

    • @BenPaton81
      @BenPaton81  Před 2 lety +1

      It sounds like you had a similar experience to me and didn't quiz the optician too much about needing them. It just takes longer to adjust them. After a month or so I go used to them as you do with any other glasses and forgot they were even varifocals after a while. I think your brain has to just adjust to your new view of the world and even things out. I'm now two years in and everything's absolutely fine, I'm about to go back to the optician. Comment at 8.00 suggests you've not had principle of how they work explained to you properly and/or you have really misunderstood badly. If you try to look at a distant object through the bottom of the leses it will ALWAYS be blurred. The bottom of the lens is for close up, the middle for intermediate and the top for distance. When adjusting to them don't over think it and simply move your eyes gently. Do not bob or try to tilt your head.
    And my major tip is to remember that like most things in life you get what you pay for. Go for the top of the range lenses and you will have a good chance of adapting to them quickly.

    It seems long sighted eyes do better than short sighted? Meaning I can’t see distance with out glasses but can’t close. I Usually look under my frames to read, or just take them off, the concern I have is I’ve got several different frames I wear colourful or brown tortoise. Or black bold frame, so am thinking if I get only one pair. And keep changing to un veri focal that will be to confusing. Just as my eyes adjust I undo it by wearing my other pairs. The REALLY annoying thing with them is that the layer that focuses on the different distances is not all focused but blurred on the peripherals as the lenses are not all clear but warped just on the bit you are supposed to through. Why can't they make the 3 distances really separate with the whole each distance bit being at the thickness they need to be.

    I'm wearing my new varifocals for 3 weeks and I have mixed feelings about them. I'm struggling quite a lot. I told the optician I wanted to check my eyes for driving, as I found turning 53 I'm not as confident reading road signs etc. in my glasses that were a few years old (single vision). She advised me to go for the varifocals. It took me 2.5 weeks to get used to driving in the during daylight but I can't cope with them in the dark, I can't read road signs, keep seeing shadows all over the place etc. I thought maybe I was tired, but took out my old single lens (prescription 8 years old) and hey presto, was able to see perfectly well, just need the prescription tweaked a bit for my distance (I'm short-sighted not long sighted). I also struggle watching telly on my 55" TV screen that's only 8-10 feet away from the couch I'm sitting on - I often watch Netflix etc with subtitles on and the words are a bit blurry). So, not sure if my prescription is incorrect or I need to give them another few weeks but I am utterly exhausted wearing them as I am struggling so much to find some sort of focus and I must look like one of those "Winston" nodding dogs that people have in their cars because my head is all over the place. Not happy chappies 😞

The real issue I have is with driving - especially in the dark - they just don't work for me and I can't take my eyes off the road long enough to try to focus on signs etc. as it is dangerous. I'm driving 37 years so I know when it doesn't feel right. Been wearing glasses (single vision) since I was 13. My optician thinks it could be a case of bad night vision and said this happens to a lot of people as they get older. So I guess its just something that happens to us and have to accept it.

      Glad you found a resolution, maybe varifocals just don't work for everyone. It's interesting hearing of the phrase bad night vision, I've not heard that before but I think I know someone else who has this no matter what glasses they try.

      @@BenPaton81 I first heard my dad mention bad night vision wrt driving, he's 82 (he's only ever had to wear reading glasses as he got a lot older, he's had perfect sight all his life and was a long distance lorry driver). I'm now 53 and this night vision issue (with my driving) only really started about a year ago. I noticed when I was driving one winter evening (in Ireland, so dark around 4.30/5pm) to a shopping centre I hadn't been to before and I couldn't read the road signs and it worried me. There is a condition called "nyctalopia" - but I don't think that's what I have, my optician did a full eye health check including optical scan so she would have picked that up. I think maybe this is just an age thing? But I'm happy with my single vision glasses and my super(duper)readers. Happy Easter Ben, enjoy the long weekend 🙂

    Hi Ben, I live local to you, in Chanldres Ford! Anyway, I have just purchased a pair of Varilux X Series varifocals, and I am struggling with seeing hardly anything in the intermediate area. There only seems to be a very tiny window to view through. I have only had them a few days (3 to be exact), and wondered if you experienced this at all? My long distance with them is perfect, but I do also find the close-up area to be very narrow. These glasses are supposed to be the best you can get (so I am told) and would have expected them to be better than what they are. I have never worn varifocals before, but I do have to use computer glasses when I am on the pc or laptop. Oh and I cannot use a pc or laptop with these varifocals unless I want to view an area that is 1cm x 1cm lol. I look forward to your reply. All the best!

      Hi Nic, nice to hear from someone local. I would say you just need to give it more time to get used to them. I had times in the first week or two where I actually thought about taking mine back to specsavers to swap for normal glasses. Whilst I've not got the same brand as you so can't comment on the Varliux I would say just stick with them for a few weeks and give yourself a chance to become accustomed to them.

      Did yours improve after a week? I can’t see anything other than the TV and I can only use the top half of my glasses because anything below mid level is useless. I work from home from a PC and have had to take the week off. Getting stressed and don’t know what to do. Any help would be so very appreciated.

      @@modestyblaise4167 hello, well week three and I am really struggling. Like you I see great out the top area, but the middle and lower parts have such a small area of clear vision it's near impossible to use them, especially for a pc or laptop. I was advised by the opticians to have a separate pair of computer glasses as varifocals do not work well with computer screens or laptops etc. This is because you cannot see everything you have to keep moving your head around the screen to get anything in focus. I'm really hacked off, these glasses cost me £780!! Don't know what to do now, they feel useless. Plus I had to buy some computer glasses now adding an extra £90 to the bill!

      @@nicbridgephotography Thanks for getting back to me. I fear exactly the same. Because I’ve not had 1 comfortable moment in 4 days when trying to read close up or use the PC, I don’t see how it can improve over time. The best I can get is a tiny window of focus on a book/iPad or intermediate range at the PC. Distance was amazing almost instantly and easy to adapt to. Quite a difference.
      My Optician can’t see me until the 16th but I’ve managed to get them to agree to a 1 month grace period from then (credit only, not a refund). Did you get a month? Did you ask them about a wider corridor lens or alter your current ones in any way? I know Essilor, makers of the Varilux X, have lots of different types of varifocus lens. Perhaps we have the wrong type for us?
      I see my options as either getting a different varifocal, adjustment or switching to 2 or 3 pairs. The problem is, I can’t just put my life on hold like this. They took over 2 weeks to be made and who knows how long to find a solution.

      @@modestyblaise4167 I only got two weeks for a full refund, so stuck with them, but they did say if I did not get on with them, they will help in any way they can. I might consider seeing if they can open up the middle area more, though from what I was told, it is already as it should be. Problem is because I revert back to my computer glasses, I then have to readjust again for the varifocals. Now what I did do, is order a pair from Glasses Direct (online) got them today funny enough. Went for their top of the range pair which was only £199! I put them on and oh my god, how bad are they! Just goes to show that Verilux X series is the best out there, however, I am really struggling. I will persevere, it's a lot of money to be sat in a case on the table and not get used.

    Great video.
    I just paid over 400 for the lenses online with a mild prescription . Had them some 48 hours.
    I had progressive lens previous but it was reading at the bottom and around 700mm distance at the top, dispensed at an independent, but ‘cheaper’ opticians
    My prescription has changed slightly after two years and I had to remove the anti glare coat as it flaked off and made them hard to use. Suffering tge glare, poor intermediate distance and scratching I caused I got retested and now find myself with new lenses
    This time I went to a more prestigious opticians
    I recycled my frame and once again stipulated office lenses. This time they suggested distance then intermediate and a ‘boost’ bottom for reading.
    I get headaches from bright lights so I okayed lenses that I could wear most of the time
    But wow, these things make me sea sick!
    I think it’s because the focal width is far too narrow - did you experience this?
    As I said my previous lens were progressive and far cheaper, yet no distortion from left to right
    New lens about twice as expensive and on a screen or book only two or three words are in focus the. I have to move my head. - three times to read a sentence in a paperback, and I’m getting fatigued trying to use design software on a 27 inch screen. I can barely use my iPad as most of it is blurred or distorted and I have to move my head a large amount to scan tge screen.
    Can’t be right, can it!?
    I’m trying to find out if there is a way of determining the focal width so when I return to the opticians after Christmas I can present some evidence of why my experience is so poor - mainly cos I’m a bit worried that they are convinced they have provided a premium product , whereas my research so far seems to suggest it’s a very cheap lens.
    Have you come across anything?
    Cheers

I think your brain adjusts to the lenses over time and it gets easier, it's like your brain learns which part of the lenses is good for what focal distance and either your brain compensates, you get used to it or you alter your behaviour of how you use them. But after a month I don't even really notice they're a different type of lens anymore.
