agree, He may have been a proto-shredder, but he pays far more attention to composition and arrangement than 90% of guitarists that fall under that category. When i listen to his albums, i'm not just waiting for the guitar to do something because the music in general is compelling. Al offers the entire package.
Wow, love the 4.10 solo! Al Di Meola is a true guitarhero!
Al invented and defined every aspect of modern guitar, and raised the bar for who we are to play from then on forward.
Wow! Bloody brilliant! I had Al on Return to Forever albums and a couple of solo albums but never seen him live. This is as exciting as it gets. Thanks for posting it.
I love Dream Theater and John Petrucci site Mr Di Meola as one of his Al who have influenced him along with Alan Holdsworth and Alex Lifeson - I see where he's coming from this is brilliant!
Probably the best guitarplayer ever
Great but Alan Holdsworth is the best love Mr.Dimiola but Holworth is beyond this earth r.i.p Alan Holdsworth
Al De Meola is one perfectionist! his command on various styles of guitar is just mind blowing!!!
I remember I used to actually see Al Dimeola VIDEOS in the early 80's!
Al is a madman..I love it..my boyfriend and I met him in October of 2006..great guy and amazing talent..long live AD.
Thanks for posting this!
AL has one of best picking tecnic in the world.

Someone please wake me up !!
My Lord ... I'm Breathless ....Whew !!!

Awesome Show!! I searching for god bird chance live video by Al di meola
it burns my fingers watching him play
Had the pleasure of seeing him "race with the devil..." (my personal favorite of his) was his last song... this is a great vid Thank you for posting
i love how his insane technique is nothing more than a way for him to express musical ideas instead of the other way around
amazing guitarist
Amaizing technical virtuoso guitar from AL..LIGHTNING SPEED..AND ACCURACY..
All I have to say is, WOW! Thank you for posting.

Definitely one of the best guitar player!!
Al the boss
absolutley superb!!!
Awesome performance!!! :)
FANTASTIC.....
Thanks for this !!!! I remember learning that matched solo line (in RWDOSH) that Al does with Barry Miles on the album. Jeez !!! I about wore the keyboard on my Minimoog out with that riff !!!! Peace :)
awesome!!!!!
People learn that practice will make you better, Al is simply fucking bad ass.
That is one tight band. Kei Akagi doesn't even break a sweat.
Al and Vai, best guitarists on the planet
LONG LIVE AL DIMEOLA.
I've always loved the name of this song. Why stop there? Why not...
Race with Devil on Spanish Highway...with burning cigarette on floor and screaming kids in back and I'm low on gas.
I had this show on video somewhere, brilliant show, shame I haven't seen it in years.
He rocks!
Absolutely fucking BRILLIANT!
I love "Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway". I love PRS guitars, too ... I'm glad Al switched from the LP ... I can hear the difference in Tone. Great Performance - would have been very exciting to see this live. Pity his Australian tour seems to have been cancelled :(
Monster!❤
Whew! That kicked ass
Actually in that tour it was Anthony Jackson if I'm not mistaken. I'll have to pull out my vinyl & look it up & get back to you..
Bagus banget! Excellent Al Di Meola!
interestingly put
Those who says he sucks just because he plays Classical/Nylon strings should be shredded by his shredding
two of them yes
WOW!!!!!!!
WOW !
I agree the tour de force with Steve Gadd & Jan Hammer was the most kicking version of these tracks.
grande grande
nice
thnx!
classic al
Drummer is the best. he can play!!
thanks how art,
BAM!!
Woweeeee!
My fave will always be Mediterranean Sundance, especially the live version on "Friday Night In San Francisco". Devastating picking chops, for a little guy. When I met him, I almost laughed. He's about 5'4" tall. Just above midget height.
Man Al's notes just pop!
yes!!!!!his name is Key Akage!!!!!!!
Met him after a concert he played in Michigan in late '80's. He tried to pick up my friend's girlfriend. My friend said "I would have broken every bone in both of his hands.... Except I want to hear his next record."
I miss that killer tone he got on "Flight Over Rio". It seemed to sustain forever, and had an incredible vocal. operatic quality.
holy butt ass. this is so incredibly good. this is what progressive jazz fusion is all about kids.
AL DI!
I agree.
Al is the truth. Believe it!
ce mec est un fou !!!!
i like heavy metal...... but i must admit al di and paco de lucia are awesome!!!!!!!! unique syle
intense
yeah from the days of land of the midnight sun.
olé!
ohh my godness
I love how people compare Al to say someone and Al will eat them alive. How in the world can you even begin to compare them? Al is unique, so is Joe, so is Yngwie, so is Vai, so is Marty, so is MAB, so is SRV, and so on... Al is flying at 1:45. The same way MAB is flying in his vids. Look up Brad Gillis in Hear 'N aid (guitarists) & Neal Schon. Oh yeah they can play! Remember keep an open mind and enjoy them all...
TOP
Al Dimeola and Larry Coryell are the jazz-rock axe masters, they should be on guitar hero, lol
wasn't he like the first shredder from the 60s?
He brought the new age of guitar!!!
@lamentate07 . Well Said!
@colinthewot He's considered one of the founders of modern 'shred' guitar playing.
does seinfeld shred guitar as well?? :)
You're right. None of the present crop of speed demons will really own up to DiMeola, even though he pretty much eats them all for breakfast.
my favorite song of his is suite:golden dawn
1:12 That is one Badass Black Bassplayer !
Give a listen to DiMeola on "Mediterranean Sundance" from "Friday Night in San Francisco" and then come back and we'll talk about technique.
Im think that al di meola is the best guitarrist of the world
He didn't say asians don't have rhythm.
He said tapping your foot while playing/listening to complex rhythms is a genetic attribute mainly found in eastern europeans, and rarely in asians.
He didn't say they had no rhythm. He explained that genetically, they are less apt at playing -against- a rhythm.
Is this performance on DVD?? Must have it if so. Anyone??
Geez guys, the keyboardist is Kei Akagi, a Japanese dude who kicks ass on the keyboards. What I find more intriguing is Al Di's hairpiece. He went bald in the early 80's and then started wearing that very phony rug on his head you see in this video. Since then I think he has had a hair transplant as his hair looks very natural nowadays...probably was big bucks.
what he means is he likes the drums best out of the song
If anyone knows where the tab for this can be found please tell. :)
Thats's not Anthony jackson on bass. It's Chuck Webb (says so in the end credits you see if you watch this til the end)
google video search for Al Di Meola - 1998 Montreal Jazz Festival. unbelieveable medley
The percussionist in this video is NOT Roger Squitero as posted, IS Gumby Ortiz, a good friend..And on drums the under-rated Tommy Brechline.
Its an early version of the Custom 24.
Always cool to see Al , even better to hear the older stuff live but this Tommy Brechtlein on the drums is just lost in space during Race w/ El Diablo , I mean come on ... didn't this guy listen to the records growing up? I did .. anyways I saw Al with RTF and later with Stomo Yamashta & GO , Al's a fine fine guitar player.
:27 seconds in, LOL @ guy in background, he's prolly syain to himself " ahhhh crap, this friggin song is damn complicated"
I´d like to hear this tune with Rush or maybe if they join, just for fun!! that will be the best album ever!
1:12 thats me EVERYtime I hear the Danza
While I personally perfer, say McLaughlin, no one can even try to deny this guy's skills
He guitar tone is amazing.
Does anyone happened to know what he played out of?
Alguien sabe que ano es este video?
precision! i love Al's soloing every note just gets nailed at 9000 rpms. Jazz rock fusion forever
