    You've missed out several upgrades.
    They've been up gunned with an additional 24cell Sea Ceptor system, replacing Aster 15.
    So now they carry 48 Aster 30s and 24 CAMMs.
    The recuperator doesn't work properly, causing catastrophic failure in warm waters
    This is being fixed with the PIP, the Power Improvement Program
    Extra diesel gen sets, bigger ones too.

      A PLAN Type 055 Destroyer with about 120 milssiles can easily take those Darlings out of the water. Only 8 anti-ship missiles? The 055 can carry dozens of air, land, and anti-ship missiles. Its radar and battle management system is far superior too. 8 anti-ship missiles is a joke. Even PLAN missile boats have more firepower to sink ships.

      Probably but the 055 is a cruiser, this is only a destroyer.
      That's like saying the Type 054 is no match for the Type 45, of course it isn't, it's a frigate.
      Both the 055 and the Type 45 are AAW ships, mostly carrying SAMs.
      You sink ships with aircraft and subs, not other ships.
      The Type 45 is almost exclusively for SAMs
      A significant difference between them is technology level.
      The 055 still requires a dozen individual radar systems to fight and navigate with.
      Right now the Type 45 is the top of the tech tree with only 2 radar sets, SAMPSON, the worlds most advanced target tracking radar and supplemented with data from the S1850M, an advanced 3D volume search radar which has the ability to detect stealth targets (using low frequency radar) and high and far track for ballistic missile defence.
      Combined with Aster, the worlds only hit-to-kill SAM family, Aster, which flies at damn near hypersonic speeds (an unclassified Mach 4.5) it is second to none.
      But it will _always_ lose if you pit it against two enemy ships, won't it?
      And you know what's worse?
      When stupid idiots Xi and Putin go around _pointing_ them at us and each other because it makes their pp hard.
      Pathetic little men who wat to rule as God Kings.
      Sadly I think the day will come when they realise that just because WE also have guns, there's a difference between invading and repelling an invasion.
      May their pain and humiliation serve as a lesson to all who come after

    Recent articles indicate that the Type 45 is having significant problems remaining at sea due to power plant failures that may require all ships of the class be overhauled. Today, it is reported that all 6 Type 45's are presently in port due to power plant issues and are unable to go to sea during the Ukraine crisis.
    If all of that is true, then the Type 45 may be the best anti-aircraft ship, but if it can't get to sea, then it doesn't really matter.

    the idea with any warship, best or otherwise, is that you can deploy it to sea to do its job. Trouble with the type 45 is that the engines dont work. 6 vessels (most of the fleet) are currently in dock having their engines replaced. The estimated return to service of most is ‘by 2028. 2028!!! This video seems based on the manufacture's pamphlet. It doesn't provide any insightful particulars of the class. The primary deficiency of the Type 45 class are they were too expensive. The Royal Navy could only afford to buy six when they needed at least 12 vessels. Twelve Type 45 escorts would have been adequate for escorts for the Royal Navy's two new carriers if the Type 45 displayed the reliability that was predicted. However, at the present only one of six are available due to constant propulsion issues. Moreover, the Type 45 doesn't have enough missiles for modern warfare. It was announced that the destroyers' anti-air armament will be enhanced with the addition of a 24 cell silo for Sea Ceptor surface-to-air missiles. This is scheduled for the 2026 to 2032 period. The Aster missiles are used by few navies and few ships resulting it being uneconomic to keep a production line going with continued updates and new missiles. At their core, modern combat systems are vastly complex software. The United States Aegis system is used by many countries and installed in dozens of ships. It is constantly debugged, improved and tested. It will work when required. The Type 45 combat system is so few in numbers that upgrades and realistic tests are hard to afford. It is questionable if it will work when the missiles fly. Finally, the Type 45s don't have Cooperative Engagement (CEC) installed. CEC is a force multiplier that would make up for some of the deficiencies of the class. The British should have purchased the USN's Aegis system and the SM-2 Block IIIC, SM-3, SM-6 and Evolved Sparrow missiles. It would have been cheaper and would have worked when needed.

      SM-3 is a must, while SM-2 and SM-6 are redundant and overprized. SM-6 being around $4.5M per missile while SM-2 around half of that. Raytheon should make a naval version of the SkyCepter missile, derived from the Stunner missile used in Davids Sling that have similar range to SM-6 but flies faster at Mach 7.5, while only being around $700k to $1M each. SkyCepter should be around half the prize of SM-2, plus its already been fielded into current Patriot systems in Poland.

    • @nirharpaz1
      @nirharpaz1 Před 2 lety

      @@johnsilver9338, As far as I know, SM-6 cost so much because it attempts to be anti-anything that moves (small, and large ships, missiles, planes, UAVs, birds shitting on your boat) while the Stunner and Barak 8 are mainly anti-air of all sorts without all the radar thing and warhead required to be effective against the ship.
      The main thing I don't like about the missile is that the 1st thing it sinks for sure is your own economy unless you are the US.

    • @johnsilver9338
      @johnsilver9338 Před 2 lety

      @@nirharpaz1 Actually, even the US Navy wont use SM-6 unless Tomahawks prove inadequate. Tomahawks are only at just around $1M. I get that SM-6 is to ba an all-rounder, but the SM-2 to be more than $2M when a Stunner missile has better performance while being cheaper. But even then SM-6 dont even have infrared homing so its price is not justifiable for its performance. Do the US just straight agree at whatever price tag Raytheon drops at their face. Maybe congress should look into this.

      Wow, 17 years, they still seem so new. Type 42s lasted 38 years and it's just a fact of the military in general that some of the hardware struggles to stay online. Just imagine the moving parts of a destroyer and the amount of maintenance they need. The Type 42s I served on had their problems but those were seen to in good time. The Russians are a bit different. They have a habit of mothballing ships and under maintaining the ones in service. Maybe a hangover from the Cold War and their fleet being too large to operate. • @IMAN7THRYLOS
      @IMAN7THRYLOS Před 2 lety

      It depends on the missile. Every missile has it’s own specifications for range, warhead size and max speed. The manufacturer will make some of these specs available to the general public.
      To make things more complicated, a missile will have many evolutions and versions over the decades that upgrade these specs.
      The general rule is that ship launched missiles have a range from 75 to 180 nautical miles.
      This is way beyond the horizon for any ship. Modern missiles have a navigation computer, maps, gyroscopes and GPS guidance that will guide the missile to an area of interest and a combination of sensors to locate targets and engage them.
      The idea is that a ship can tell a missile to go that way and attack and the missile can use a radar or other sensors to locate and engage a target of interest.
      If the ship and the missile don’t have satellite communication, then the ship can’t update the guidance beyond a range because…physics and geography. So the missile navigates by itself.

    • @paultanton4307
      @paultanton4307 Před 2 lety

      The Range is mainly governed by your ability to find then track a Target - if you can do that and your Missile has a 500 mile Range the 500 miles it is.

    The submarine defense may be an issue for the Type 45 from what I understand if they become deployed in the South China Sea... It is pretty clear given satellite imagery in the region that the Chinese fleet has been "semi-covertly" mass producing submarines ever since 2017. They likely tend to keep their submarine numbers concealed in case a conflict starts in the region.
    Still, the British have substantial Naval warfare experience and are unlikely to deploy lone destroyers lacking in escort submarine defense and surface defense ships. They would likely keep sufficient distance to prevent excessive risk from the NBC attacks, but also keep sufficient coverage as to defend the Type 45 via area denial from within their approximate proximity.

The cost of fixing the problem is huge and increases the overall cost of an already very over-priced class! @Drew Peacock SM-3 is a midcourse interceptor. Its Block IIA has a terminal speed of Mach 15. They are the fastest interceptors out there. Not even Russia's A-135 or China's DN-3 could do that. It has the capability to intercept at initial phase and it was actually the Russians who said that. This is why Russia and China were so adamant to produce hypersonic weapons to counter this. Hypersonic weapons are also a hype. Its no holy grail. A hypersonic glide vehicle omits lots of heat around its body giving off a very bright infrared signature that low observable satellites can pickup. They are susceptible to interceptors with infrared homing guidance. Actually, ballistic missiles with a depressed trajectory are much faster if not the same. Plus Russia's Avangard and China's DF-ZF cant be deployed considering they use ballistic missile as their carrier. The enemy wont know if it will only be used just as a carrier for the glide vehicle or if its a preemptive nuclear strike, so it will always lead to an all out nuclear response. If i remember correctly, Japan didnt want the Aegis Onshore SM-3 because the large boosters will fall off hitting their mainland. But their destroyers are equipped with SM-3. Japan also has a hand in manufacturing SM-3 Block IIA.

If THAAD fails, it will be up to Patriot with SkyCepter missiles derived from Stunner missiles equipped with infrared homing. After that, it will be the PAC-3 missiles. If SM-6 fails, it will be up to SM-2, Sparrow and Rolling Airframe Missiles. THAAD is also going to get an extended range upgrade. SM-6 will also be made faster. Last line of defense is the CIWS and laser and microwave.
