This documentary glosses-over dad Murray's abuse of his sons. Dennis was a rambunctious and independent child, who stood-up to his father. And as in most abusive families, that's the child who gets it the worst. The pain and despair of this situation must have affected Dennis deeply. And contributed to his later problems.
It's only now ppl have a better understanding of depression anxiety and panic attacks other mental illnesses and unfortunately to this day ppl still dont understand it. Brilliant band
Besides Brian, Dennis was the soul of The Beach Boys. Dennis was the band's only "true" surfer, taking to the water at every opportunity. It was very sad to hear of his passing back in late 1983. He was just 39 years old. When Dennis tragically died, I can bet it tore Brian up inside. I miss you Dennis. You made great harmony with Brian, Carl, Mike & Al. You're missed to this very day. "When Brian lost his mind it was Dennis who led the band through hard times"... This statement is just so completely wrong. First of all, Brian suffers from a mental illness. Second, Dennis did not assume leadership after Brian's difficulties. It was Carl who took over as leader (Dennis was Carl's most consistent ally in the creative direction of the band at the time, though).
Yeah, Dennis had the "look" of a TV star. But, Brian was just as cool. He didn't surf, but was a football quarterback at Hawthorne High. And he wrote and produced records like nobody else in America.
Dennis is so under-appreciated as a songwriter. Daryl Dragon (of Captain and Tennille fame) stated that Dennis could come up with these chords and melodies that his classically trained music teachers would have killed for, but Dennis wouldn't even know the names of the chords. That kind of gift just has to be in their genes. Hopefully appreciation for his music will continue to grow.
Eugenia Hoffman I was amazed To find out that Dennis was not just a so-so drummer, occasional gritty lead vocalist.and teen girl magnet. I think I had a bootleg copy of his second album, which I’m not sure ever came out (sort of a BigStar3). But a lot of his music I thought was AlexChiltonish. Met him in a parking lot once. Then the son of a bitch drowned, pulling the plug on our best rock band. Without seeing him, hearing him back there it was never the same.
Saw The Beach Boys for the first time in 1971 in Boston. Daryl Dragon was their keyboardist - and had already adopted his "Captain" image. Man, could he play!

My girlfriend and I managed to get backstage area where The Beach Boys were playing. It wasn’t a huge venue and was at our local fairgrounds in Phoenix. While we were backstage taking in all the sights, Dennis Wilson walked up to us. He had cutoffs on and that was it. He was eating a hamburger and wanted to know if we wanted a bite. He was gorgeous and very sweet to us. I’ll never forget that little moment we had.
There are several factors at play here, one is self projection the father hated that Dennis was a free spirit and he wasn’t ( destroy what threatens you ), the father needed to be in control, Dennis reminded him that he wasn’t, so he beat his anger into his son which set up Dennis’s self sabotaging ways later in life. I suspect the message to Dennis for not conforming to his controlling father was that he was not acceptable or good enough. Childhood programming shapes the personalities lifelong blueprint. A typical outcome of Dennis’s self sabotage ( the subconscious needs to prove itself right -belief system ) was that he couldn’t allow success to stay for long, in his mind he wasn’t worthy of it, that’s what he was taught. Also some children are more sensitive than others ( hence his solo album, it gives us a window into just how sensitive he was ) and it is very likely that Dennis’s rebellion stemmed from observing his father bully all around him and his coping mechanism was to fight the controller. The ultimate expression of power is control, simply, this became a power struggle between father and son for who had power over Dennis himself or his father and this concreted his lifelong struggle against authority and conformity. The sad thing is anger, needing to be in control and jealousy ( his father ) usually stem from someone who is wounded themselves. Most people conform Dennis whether he knew it or not ( even before the addictions ) didn’t give his power away, he was one of a kind not someone’s else’s version of who he should be. I just wish he could of seen his own strength instead of believing the lie that he wasn’t enough. Rest sweet spirit “ there is no death only a change of worlds” - Chief Joseph
Damn bro that’s amazing take. You literally explained my very difficult complex relationship with my father, who was very verbally abuse and physical at times. You never shake that. I’m very insecure, and always feel like I’m being watched, and judged. I myself try to be a people pleaser, to avoid conflict. At the same time I have this crazy will, to prove myself. I have a lot of pint of anger at times. When it comes out it explodes. I’ve rebelled my whole life, and struggled with one addiction or another most of my life.
I met Dennis at Peaches Records in Dearborn Mi in 1977. It was during his promotional tour for his Pacific Ocean Blue album. He was great. He'd shake your hand or stand with you for a photo (which I have) or autograph something. You didn't have to buy anything either. One thing that stood-out to everyone was the look, demeanor and aura that he had. Men were envious and women were totally blown away. RIP Dennis.
Dennis was a fucking genius truly at heart. My mom made me a promise that would play the Studio session of Denny's Drums' that she would give me $20 if I could do it and I did. He's always been one of my heroes' and I still appreciate everything he's done in his life. Such a freakin amazing dude but yet a unrepected person. His legacy has mostly been forgotten but he still penned the amazing song "forever" made famous by John Stamos.
I was a dock neighbor of Denny. Didn't know him well, but I was there when he went in the water in MDR. My sons and I still leave flowers on the spot where his body was recovered during the night of 12-28-83; when we are in town...I must do it this year..I've missed the last few years
Extremely sad. Good that you do that for his memory. Hate to say it, but plain and simple, the devil had a hold on him and wasn't going to let go until he was dead. My dad lived the last four or five years of his life, a demented alcoholic, and I was the guy who took care of him the last three ... and trust me, it was Hell on earth much of that time. But glad the Lord honored me with that important job ...
Here's the strange thing about my connection with Denny. I never knew who he was until the day of his death. He had a face covered with a thick beard and long hair; literally, all you could see were his eyes. We were dock-neighbors on Marquesas Way for several months; and we would run into each other in the parking lot, the head, on the dock; and sometimes, hold the gate open when we had our arms full of groceries or "boat-stuff", and occasional small talk...Often about "girl/woman" trouble, issues. On the day he died I was headed over to Perry's Pizza for a late lunch and two of his "buddies" ran up to me in the parking lot and told me that he had dove into the marina to recover some memento he had rashly thrown in the marina. I ran behind them back to the boat and asked how long had he been gone and they said "10 or 15 minutes". I stopped in my tracks and said, "Dude! Either you buddy is "F...in" with you or he's gone." I knew Denny hung out at Hinanos occasionally and told them..."One of you guys should check out where he might go for a drink or hang out, and in the meantime the other should call the Harbor Patrol." I know that sounds harsh; but I was working as a licensed P.I. and bodyguard at the time...and I suppose I was a little jaded. That evening, when I returned from Perry's, the road and parking lot was covered with news vans, emergency vehicles and gawkers. Harbor Patrol boats and helicopters were playing their spotlights over the dark water. I walked up to one of the female news people and said, "I guess the guy drowned...but why all the coverage?" She gave me a surprised look and said, "That "guy" was Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys." I was stunned. Anyway, I showed my I.D. and made my way down to my dock. There was a lot excitement out on the water and in a few minutes they were wheeling a body, covered by a sheet, up the gangway on a hospital gurney to a waiting ambulance. I held the gate open for them...and said a prayerful "Good Bye". I was also a dock buddy and friend of Hal Blaine for many years...He had some great Beach Boy stories...many about Denny. I miss him. He was one of the most "straight up" people I ever knew. Sorry for the digression.
@@richardschaefer4807 Sad story. Dennis was a very kind and caring person. I 1st met him in the. 70's , Then many times after. The 4th time I was with them, I traveled to another state to see them. I came by myself- Dennis knew that and was very concerned fo my safety, especially going home. I had not given anyone my address or phone # . Imagine my stunned shock, when I picked up the phone a few days later and it was Dennis, checking to makes sure I got home o.k.! He was a caring gentle soul the Dennis I knew. He never "acted famous" Sounds like you knew that Dennis too.
Growing up, every guy wanted to be Dennis Wilson--he was ultimate cool, & will always be so. What a talent he was. The Spirit of The Beach Boys. BW was The Genius. Carl was The Heart. Dennis was Forever. Wolfsky9
Joanie Adams In a way he did lose his mind. He stayed in bed for years and someone who is sane doesn’t do that, hell he was caught trying to give his daughter drugs. He had mean voices in his head that would make him very paranoid. So yes he did lose his mind, but came back from it before it would’ve done serious damage than it already has

My kids grew up in the first decade of the new millennium. They adopted The Beach Boys for their own in the midst of the cacophony of the era! All road trips had their best music as background to adventure!
Love you dearly, David Lee Marks, but around 6:10, where we see the pier, is near 9th Street and Strand, not 26th Street. I grew up very near 7th Street and the Strand. Everything else you say is wonderful!
The BBC has the know-how to do the probably best documentarys in the world. I'm proud of them and of the Beach Boys. Thak you,doorsfan4ourever for upload this wonderful documentary.
@gumshoesoul Maybe so, but there are way more people considered dumb that remain dumb and would never, EVER, be mistaken for a genius. You, for example, would do fine as the "leader" of said dummies.

"When Brian lost his mind, it was Dennis who lead the band through hard times." Ok, Dennis was amazing and Pacific Ocean Blue is gorgeous and some of my favorite post-Brian-in-control songs are Dennis's (Little Bird, Forever, etc.
Of course it was Carl - simply because he was the far better musician and singer and his lifestyle was healthier. Dennis wasn´t a good drummer and singer. He might have been a nice guy but no discipline at all. Remember the BB kicked him out of the band for a few years as their collaboration became annoying. There are some live clips from that era. They replaced him with a better drummer and he sat behind a grand piano playing and singing something weird that didn´t fit to the music at all. So - they were performing in front of a big audience and he was high on drugs. No band can tolerate a behavior like that.
Dennis Wilson you did the best that you could may God have mercy on your soul and may you rest in peace you'll always be remembered as a favorite I wish I could tell that to his face
Great stuff on Dennis. We don't always get to see stuff on anyone else but Brian! I agree with the host in that Dennis was "the DNA of the band". Had Dennis not provided the inspiration for the early stuff, Brian might have been a genius... but never gotten out of the garage. We'll never know. Speaking of which, it is interesting to see David Marks in this bit. One wonders if he spends much of his life with the "what could have been" thoughts.
Man the good ole days.People have changed so much since the days when I was growing up.I feel sorry for todays kids what do they have to look forward too?
aaaredskin Actually I know quite a bit about the band. And I also know quite a bit about writing music and playing in a band because I've been a professional musician my entire adult life (I'm now 50). Yes, their voices blended well. But the fact is, had Brian wanted to, he could have found many other singers who sang well together. Brian wrote the music; the others just sang it. Big difference. No Brian, no Beach Boys; No Mike Love, you still have the Beach Boys.
bobby bob Yes, it was Brian who made it go. Brian was to the Beach Boys what Jimmy Page was to Led Zeppelin, or what oranges are to orange juice. The entire basis for the product that came out to the public.
What did Mike Love bring forth to the band? Lawsuits, greed, and arrogance. We're still talking about the dickwad that kicked Al, Brian, and David out of the "Beach Boys" after their 50 year anniversary so that he and (useless) Bruce could play at various county fairs. Mike also hated on Smile and Pet Sounds more than anyone else in the band, he just wanted to keep singing about surfing (which he never did, ever) and cars via the song structure and lyrics that Brian handed over to him on a silver plate. If you "know the band" you'd never hold Mike to the same caliber as either Carl or Brian. For the record, Carl was the man and there's absolutely nothing negative to say about him IMO.
I thank you endlessly for this. Dennis is my hero, as you will see from my channel - 'Time', 'Thoughts Of You' & 'Forever' covers I did. I can't thank you enough. Lots of love x

Brian Wilson didn't "lose his mind", dammit...he suffered with anxiety and depression. they shouldn't make it sound like he turned into a psychopathic nutbar =/
How stupid are you? Brain Wilson did loose his mind - when the rest of the band got some silly man tho thy to make him well but instead he was abe to control him and went as far as steal the rights to all of his songs!
As a drummer myself...there is something to be said for a guy to start playing on command. Having not previously played to suddenly be recording. And...I've always appreciated him not throwing in a million rolls and fills...A lot of drummers say that he just wasn't good enough to but he made it work. Some times it's better to play it simple.
@@mikecastellon3022 What i'm going on is a live show. He 's drunk asf but still played it strait , But ya.. I do know about Hal...as I said. I play myself.
BBC has the best music docs, pet sounds art that shook the world is another good one, someone should start a channel with all music docs, especially from the bbc
really it was about seven miles I lived eight blocks from them on the other side of Compton boulevard they live two doors down from my Uncle George I frequent to their home and they freaked wooded my uncle's home regularly until I moved away in 1970.. yes always something happening at the Wilson home LOL
According to Google Maps, it is a simple drive from The Beach Boys Monument next to the 105 freeway to nearby Prairie Ave to Manhattan Beach Boulevard then straight to the pier. GRAND TOTAL=3.9 miles.
Terry Melvin , The Wrecking Crew played on hundreds of Top Forty Hits for multiple bands including: the Monkees, the Byrds, The Mama’s and the Papa’s, Sonny and Cher, the 5th Dimension, Jan & Dean, and of course Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. Davy Jones once laughed when the Monkees were chastised for not playing on their own records. He joked, “Nobody played on their own records 😂”.
Yes, up through '63-64 he did and intermittently in those years before the collapse of Smile in 1967 (for example on the Pet Sounds track 'That's Not Me') and then of course he played from the Smiley Smile album in 1967 through his death in 1983 on Beach Boys albums. Not ALWAYS, but often enough.
This is really good material. AMAZINGLY GOOD !! What a discovery for me .. a lifelong hardcore BBs & BW fanatic. Great to hear Dave Marks telling the story of growing up with Wilsons in Hawthorne. Poor old lawrentskin's comments are v. sad - he hasn't a clue !! Poor guy !!
These are my favourite Dennis Wilson songs: Forever on the Sunflower album. Cuddle up on Carl & the Passions. Angel come home & Love surrounds me from the LA album. River song & You & I from Pacific Ocean Blue. ;)
England never let go of the Beach Boys unlike the American press which quickly embraced acid-rock and the Woodstock craze. The band continued to tour England during the "down years" (absence from the commercial success of radio & record sales) between 1967 and the emergence of the greatest hits re-package called "Endless Summer" in 1974. Thank you, U.K. !!
@jvarela965 I grew up in Southwood Torrance and I now live in Hawthorne. I'd like to clear something up about Hawthorne. It is not all poor legal or illegal migrants and it is NOT a sad place today. We live in the Wiseburn district of Hawthorne and would you believe there are many people who still live here after moving in nearly 30 years ago? I have wonderful neighbors who attended Hawthorne High back with the Wilson Bros. Hawthorne is a HUGE city and I am happy to be living here.
Dennis was cool, but without Brian, he'd have spent his life running a small surf shop, and logging thousands of hours making change and sweeping sand off the old concrete floor 45 minutes past closing.
+GuanRythe - Correct ! Read Kent Crowley's new book on Carl and you'll see just HOW very correct you are ! Carl's many contributions aren't all easily recognized.
Yeah I came to post the exact same thing. If anything the group became democratic, with different members holding different levels of sway within the group at any given time. Except Poor Al, who has led the direction of band exactly zero times. Which is fewer than Bruce Johnston.
BEST US BAND THERE EVER WILL BE. No contest...no doubt. No one else comes close. ( if I had to pick a number 2. Eric Carmen Raspberries. And there’s a ton of number 3. A few are: Paul Revere and the Raiders. Big Star. New York Dolls. Jan and Dean. Ramones. MoNKEES. Fountains of Wayne. Blink-182. The Nazz.
Yep, Murry had tight controls on his sons and was super judgmental of them and beat them and punished them in horrific ways. He once hit Brian with a 2x4. These weren't isolated things that Murry did, this was ALL OF THE TIME, and it had a very big price. Both Barbara and Karen (Dennis' ex wives) both said that Dennis' biggest hangup was that he never found true acceptance from Murry, and never learned to love himself. A tortured soul, always looking to fill the void. If only he knew his talents
Thanks! I was recently in SoCal, but I wasn't able to visit the area where the BB grew up :( (Next time for sure!) But it's not hard to figure out by David's verbal description, how much the area has changed! I'm from outside Chicago, and have been a fan since I was a kid. I was fortunate to have seen the BB many times in the 70's when Dennis and Carl were with us. Not to mention seeing them in concert with my favorite band Chicago...one of my fondest memories!!
Initially, Mike Love rebuked Dennis' drum playing but eventually Dennis became capable of holding his own I thought despite not having formal training. He sounded quite polished.
After the Little Deuce Coupe Album Dennis stopped recording with the Beach Boys. Hal Blaine had taken over the drums by that point. Still, Dennis did fine as a live drummer in the band.
@@jasona9 That's actually not completely true. Hal Blaine definitely filled in a lot in the mid-60s, but Dennis still played on albums and songs after Little Deuce Coupe. Dennis played the kit on "I Get Around" and Hal Blaine added some additional percussion. Other hits he played on were "Little Honda" and "Don't Worry Baby." The Wrecking Crew really heavily stepped in on the Today! album and "California Girls" and it grew from there. Dennis however did play on a track on Pet Sounds, "That's Not Me." That's the sole song on the album to only feature the Beach Boys on the backing track. Then following the Smile era, Dennis started playing again on most of their albums (Wild Honey, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up) until he injured his hand and Ricky Fataar stepped in.

An underrated hidden gem...cuddle up ..such raw real emotive lyrics and vocals from Dennis....little bird ..awesome as well...an underrated genius during the plethora of frontmen of the band ..i have a book on Dennis .called "Dumb Angel"...i hate that title...Angel..?.maybe...dumb...absolutely not..in my opinion the " Jim Morrison ".of the Beach Boys..a genius in so many ways ..a free flowing lovable spirit ..a real human being...mis understood..underrated..judged at times ..and marginalized to a certain extent....so Dumb..no fucking way..like Jim..just made bad choices and decisions in life at times..like we all do ..human nature ..albiet lucid .coherent..or intoxicated..non compos mentis..either it took his life
Carl was the greatest Beach Boy but Brian wrote much of the music and Dennis was an absolute witch on the drums. Al Jardine absolutely deserved more leads than he got and Mike Love was as big a douche than anyone in the history of mankind. How's that for summing up our beloved Beach Boys, a National Monument?
@@neilryan4166 I'd recommend it still. The narrator takes some liberties, but I'd say after Brian, Dennis was by far their best songwriter. Agreed that Carl took over in terms of production and musical direction for the live shows, but Dennis wrote some of their best non-Brian Wilson songs, "Forever," "Slip on Through," "Cuddle Up," "Celebrate the News," "Only with You," etc.
The song is called "Ace Of Spades", Link Wray recorded it but this isnt that version, his version is in Pulp Fiction, this is a more surf style sound, Hope this helps you.
*****Ill give you a second to go clean the load out of your pants... Im very aware that the beach boys dont call for neil peart drumming. He contributed nothing as far as musicianship goes except for being there for touring. And when I say that I dont mean its because he wasnt doing amazing technical drumming im saying lets not pretend hes some revered legend. He was an average composer, above average voice, and yes whoopdee fuckin doo he can keep time on the drums. Brian is the real genius and everyone knows it pal
***** you silly bitch. As time went on dennis surpassed brian huh? More like as time went on brian made pet sounds which is now held as one of the best albums ever as well as what influenced sgt peppers (one of the best albums of all time). And you're obviously not a drummer dude you clearly know nothing of the sort. Just trust me, dennis was nothing special as a drummer.
David Marks "The Unknown Beach Boy" at .33. If Murray wasn't such a prick he would have stayed on as guitarist and Al would have switched to bass when Brian opted out of the touring. I think it would have been very beneficial to the career of the band, even though David re-joined the Beach Boys again in the 1990's, he missed out on a huge career. Him and Carl really had a great sound together -not to slight Al, but David was a much more focused player, and had that "Surf Sound" down (listen to The Marksmen). Dennis was a fine vocalist, shame he left so soon, as he had a lot to give.
Jon Stebbins seems to have this idea that Dennis played drums on recording dates. I guess he never heard of session musicians. It may not have been Hal Blaine on drums, but I seriously doubt Dennis was at those skins on the records.
Actually there are a lot of misconceptions about that. Hal Blaine definitely filled in a lot in the mid-60s, but Dennis played on most of the early albums and singles. Dennis played the kit on "I Get Around" and Hal Blaine added some additional percussion. Other hits he played on were "Surfin' Safari," "Catch a Wave," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Little Honda" and "Don't Worry Baby." The Wrecking Crew really heavily stepped in on the Today! album and "California Girls" and it grew from there. After Fataar left, Dennis would continue to play on albums.
You have the inspiration of California, most perfect place on earth to live. And then you have London, cloudy cold foggy. Of course it will influence the music. The Beatles are great, but the beach boys make me feel good, and that's. Not an education, that's fun.
David Marks was one of the original Beach Boys and he is not bullshitting. The configuration of the streets have changed. What used to be a corner house is no longer on a corner, obviously. There was once a street there that divided two neighborhoods, Hawthorne from Inglewood. And they were friends despite the age difference, which is more like 3 1/2 yrs. I suggest you read 'Heroes and Villains.' It's all in there...

Please, leave a flower for me
Here's the strange thing about my connection with Denny.
I walked up to one of the female news people and said, "I guess the guy drowned...but why all the coverage?"
She gave me a surprised look and said, "That "guy" was Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys." I was stunned.
RIP Dennis. We will always love you.
How well, I remember the era, having grown up near Hawthorne. My aunt used to regularly babysit the Beach Boys when they were children.
Growing up, every guy wanted to be Dennis Wilson--he was ultimate cool, & will always be so. What a talent he was. The Spirit of The Beach Boys. BW was The Genius. Carl was The Heart. Dennis was Forever. Wolfsky9
nah dennis was the spirit man
Dennis was Forever, what a beautiful phrase
Dennis was the only one to support Brian through thick and thin, he praised everything Brian did even when Brian was losing his mind...
would you ALL stop saying Brian lost his mind!!!

@@brianwilson2024 You are welcome and Thank you for acknowledging my comment...love and peace.
I really wish this were available on DVD...It's one of the best documentaries I have seen.
truly! looks like the movie American Band: The Beach Boys took script from this.
The BBC has the know-how to do the probably best documentarys in the world.
I'm proud of them and of the Beach Boys. Thak you,doorsfan4ourever for upload this wonderful documentary.
RIP Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson :(
@gumshoesoul ????
@gumshoesoul what a dumb comment.

11jupitercowboy8 I say it was a little bit of both
Carl in terms of production, Dennis in regards to songwriting.
No band can tolerate a behavior like that.
until he was 2 drunk to sing!
@Ramadan Steve
True and sad.
Dennis Wilson you did the best that you could may God have mercy on your soul and may you rest in peace you'll always be remembered as a favorite I wish I could tell that to his face
GOD BE WITH YOU, DENNIS! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹
Back in the sixties I loved this band.
He is often in Brian's band...
dennis became a frikkin bumb
David Marks...the only Beach Boy with any credibility. I could listen to him talk for hours. Lovely to see him with his moms. Thanks.
Uhm actually Carl led the Beach Boys after Brian ceded creative control..........
The song FOREVER is a beautiful Dennis Wilson song. It is on the Beach Boys Box Set.
The Beach Boys were Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, and Mike. No need to argue, they all had to be present, to make the band one voice.
Don’t forget Bruce in the mid 60s and 70s
Man the good ole days.People have changed so much since the days when I was growing up.I feel sorry for todays kids what do they have to look forward too?
Dennis was way too good looking for his own good. And he sure knew how to be a naughty boy.
I wish I had that problem. >_
Wanna mess around?
@@mayemcdonald9111 , sure.
He totally squandered his looks.
blondwiththewind Rubbish
the song that made me cry was Forever such a bieautiful song it hit me like a truck
A beautiful song made all the more poignant with Dennis' passing.
For those who question David Marks, he's the real deal. He's currently on tour playing lead guitar for the Beach Boys.
He also was the first to have long hair! I think his hair was even longer than the Beatles or the Stones in 1964!
Patricia LAMBERT , whoopdy dooo.
The Beach Boys IS Brian Wilson. The others could have been replaced by anyone who could sing or play a little. Brian was irreplaceable; a true genius.
aaaredskin Actually I know quite a bit about the band. No Brian, no Beach Boys; No Mike Love, you still have the Beach Boys.
bobby bob
Yes, it was Brian who made it go. Brian was to the Beach Boys what Jimmy Page was to Led Zeppelin, or what oranges are to orange juice. The entire basis for the product that came out to the public.
cooking? WTF
For the record, Carl was the man and there's absolutely nothing negative to say about him IMO.
bobby bob True BUT Carl had the voice of the Beach Boys. Brian was.is the musical genius and Dennis held his own.
Dennis was always my favorite - his song “ Forever,” is
FOREVER.
Just watched this...now I'll watch it again and again. This is the real Californ-I-A sound.
"It is so garage"
That quote has added to my vocabulary
I had to thumb down because this orator dis respected Brian, The driving force and the producer of the early Beach Boys.
We all know the good truth about Brian how he was a true genius. I say that from the bottom of my heart
I thank you endlessly for this. Dennis is my hero, as you will see from my channel - 'Time', 'Thoughts Of You' & 'Forever' covers I did. I can't thank you enough. Lots of love x

Brian Wilson didn't "lose his mind", dammit...he suffered with anxiety and depression. they shouldn't make it sound like he turned into a psychopathic nutbar =/
roflmows also schizophrenia, extreme drug addiction, and bipolar disorder
This is true. But unfortunately his worthless doctor, ( Dr. Landy), didn't help the situation.
Yah offering your daughter coke sitting for hours in only red lighting on coke 4 packs of cigs and 4 steaks a day holy molay that is suicidal
How stupid are you? Brain Wilson did loose his mind - when the rest of the band got some silly man tho thy to make him well but instead he was abe to control him and went as far as steal the rights to all of his songs!

Some people aren't meant to be old
They did not invent the California Beach Sound. That was Jan and Dean. But they took that sound to astronomical heights and into Rock History!!
Jan and Deans first live show were 5 Beach boys songs, and their first Album was written by who else BRIAN! learn your facts!!!
You do know he fever played on the records....Hal Blaine played on every one
@@mikecastellon3022 What i'm going on is a live show. He 's drunk asf but still played it strait , But ya.. I do know about Hal...as I said. I play myself.
Dennis was a very underrated drummer. He was the best
BBC has the best music docs, pet sounds art that shook the world is another good one, someone should start a channel with all music docs, especially from the bbc
Manhattan Beach within "walking distance" of the Wilson home?!?! lol Yep, 10 miles ... just a hop skip and a jump.
+winsum4465 Who walks in SoCa? Even kids barely walk here, haha.
Back in my day Hawthorne was 20 miles from the Beach. It was even less true then.
really it was about seven miles I lived eight blocks from them on the other side of Compton boulevard they live two doors down from my Uncle George I frequent to their home and they freaked wooded my uncle's home regularly until I moved away in 1970.. yes always something happening at the Wilson home LOL
More like 3 miles, I used to live there.
According to Google Maps, it is a simple drive from The Beach Boys Monument next to the 105 freeway to nearby Prairie Ave to Manhattan Beach Boulevard then straight to the pier. GRAND TOTAL=3.9 miles.
Great, accurate and insightful documentary. Long live Dennis Wilson.
Americas greatest ever band, no contest.
Second greatest band of all time.
Agree America's greatest and only 2 nd to the Beatles in the 60s worldwide...
The Shags were better.
nice John thanks!
Poor guy !!
These are my favourite Dennis Wilson songs:
Forever on the Sunflower album. Cuddle up on Carl & the Passions. Angel come home & Love surrounds me from the LA album. River song & You & I from Pacific Ocean Blue. ;)
Brian was the Beach Boys. Dennis was lucky to be his brother
FUN FACT: Dennis was the ONLY Beach Boy that surfed. He said they all tried, even Brian, but were terrible....LOL
BBC always has great stuff like this.
cool! never knew!
And?
Oh jeez. He's also the hottest. My personal favorite Beach Boy, and also, I feel, the most misunderstood.
Brian did his best to appease his father, brothers and friends in the band. This ultimately contributed to his break-down.
ok....Dennis was all those things BUT the one that led the Beach Boys after Brian lost his mind was Carl, not Denny.
+GuanRytheFantastic Carl led in terms of production, but Dennis contributed more in terms of writing music.
Blink-182. The Nazz.
yes with high octaves
None of them had training. Like me, they just did it.

An underrated hidden gem...cuddle up ..such raw real emotive lyrics and vocals from Dennis....little bird ..awesome as well...an underrated genius during the plethora of frontmen of the band ..i have a book on Dennis
.called "Dumb Angel"...i hate that title...Angel..?.maybe...dumb...absolutely not..in my opinion the " Jim Morrison ".of the Beach Boys..a genius in so many ways ..a free flowing lovable spirit ..a real human being...mis understood..underrated..judged at times ..and marginalized to a certain extent....so Dumb..no fucking way..like Jim..just made bad choices and decisions in life at times..like we all do ..human nature ..albiet lucid .coherent..or intoxicated..non compos mentis..either it took his life
Thank you for this.
I think what they mean by the real beach boy is that Dennis was the only one who surfed and spent most of his time on the beach
Love this!😍😍😍❤❤❤
Carl was the greatest Beach Boy but Brian wrote much of the music and Dennis was an absolute witch on the drums. Al Jardine absolutely deserved more leads than he got and Mike Love was as big a douche than anyone in the history of mankind. How's that for summing up our beloved Beach Boys, a National Monument?
I stopped watching 1:27 in after “When Brian lost his mind, it was Dennis who led the band through hard times.” Yeah, ok. #Carl
yeah - I paused to see the comments, got sidetracked doing something else and now I don't feel like watching this anymore
Agreed.
That comment got my attention too.
absolutely! me too! if I know any groups history I know my Beach Boys.
Great to see you David!!!
The song is called "Ace Of Spades", Link Wray recorded it but this isnt that version, his version is in Pulp Fiction, this is a more surf style sound, Hope this helps you.

Yes Brian is a god, and Carl and angel, but Dennis? THE. MAN. Love the Dennis! What a great writer , drummer and singer! Miss u man!
Steven King dude his drumming was nothing special lets not be romantic fools here
*****Ill give you a second to go clean the load out of your pants...
***** as far as respect goes hes right there with the monkees... pretty good.. but not beatles level. Brian was beatles level
***** john and paul admitted to being obsessed with pet sounds and 90% sure george was too. And personally I think ringos track were very catchy
Take affence to saying Dennis taking over due to Brian losing his mind
We all miss you brother Dennis!
After Fataar left, Dennis would continue to play on albums.
A real pity that Dennis was bound and determined to do himself in.
You have the inspiration of California, most perfect place on earth to live. And then you have London, cloudy cold foggy. Of course it will influence the music. The Beatles are great, but the beach boys make me feel good, and that's. Not an education, that's fun.
+Ronnie Bishop Right on, i agree. I grew up on an East Coast beach, and their music changed my life, made me move to the West Coast.
The Beatles were from Liverpool, not London.
well put and so true.
I read he was homeless when he died.😢
he died dead drunk
7:00 Wow it's almost how Brian would look like in the summer of '67 way before all that ever happened
Well that's how I felt BEFORE watching all six parts of this documentary anyway...
35 years ago today, what a loss.
Thank you !!
Dennis the menace😂 love it
@maxchidos It's the instrumental version of 'Be With Me' from the Hawthorne CA album.
Is this video about Dennis, or about these two neighbors?
3:12 better make sure to get a close-up of that 'similar window', cameraman
