    Don't use Windex, Windex is only for Regular Plain Glass NOT for Primary Coated Mirrors. For my Mirrors Multi-Coated , I only use top "Photographic Lens-Mirror Sprays specifically formulated for Multi-Coated Lenses and Mirrors, I Purchase it from my Photographic Camera Store Specifically made by Opticians for Multi-Coated Lenses and Mirrors , I then wipe with only Photographic Lens-Mirror Tissues also purchased at Photographic Camera Retailers"! Your Windex method has just reduced Reflectivity!!

    This is awesome stuff. This is what man-kind should concentrate on.
    Not building churches and nonsense rituals of religions.
    Science is the most important endevour imaginable. Its astonishing that we have all this knowledge and still superstition rule so many lives.

      have you considered joining a local astronomy club? you'd be able to do exactly that. show people the universe by hosting free public observations.

    With Chili's location on a major fault zone, it must be a fragile operation no matter what is being done. Has anyone heard if the last large quake caused any calibration changes?

    Why use aluminium when you have to change it out once a while ?
    would paladium or platinum not be longer lasting ?

      Ad Meijer Aluminium has a constant (very high) reflectance over a large part of the spectrum (from UV to IR, including the visual range). And, this might suprise you, an aluminium coating is actually very durable because it always has an utrathin protective cover of aluminium oxide. Aluminium oxide is one of the hardest and materials we know of. You may know it as saphire.

    anyone else notice the particle of dust on the mirror while buddy is testing the reflectivity

    • @Chaosfury50
      @Chaosfury50 Před 5 lety

      Yes but our methodology is flawed. While not reasonable or even feasible, we are using our mere devices to peer into their clean room setup. Now taking this into consideration, it's not impossible that every person that sees that dust particle, actually has it as a defect in their screen or miniscule scratch. We can't rule this out.
      And because of this, I am required by law to say that I can't confirm or deny your observation, but I have taken note of it.

  • @LordFazza
    @LordFazza Před 9 lety +2

    why isnt the mirror maitenance building right next to the telescopes?

    • @Arthemax
      @Arthemax Před 8 lety +4

      +LordFazza There is limited space on top of the mountain, and to avoid light polution and so on, only the bare necessities for telescope operation are located on the mountaintop. Also, the area has several mountaintops with telescopes located on them, and the mirror maintenance building serves all of them.

    maybe this is a dumb question, but why don't they just build a mirror maintenance building right next to the observatory building? wouldn't that ultimately save a lot of time and effort transporting it to be maintained?

    • @ssnoc
      @ssnoc Před 2 lety +1

      Why? Because that makes too much sense - this is all from grant money most likely, so the objective is to make it as complicated as possible - I always wondered why, in the 21st century, they can’t make a reflective surface on Mylar or some other thin flexible material - why does it even need to be a zillion pounds? What about a carbon fiber frame? None of it makes sense to me.

      You think you're so smart. There's a lot of variables that you are ignorant of. I'm ignorant of many of them too. but I at least know enough to know how much more ignorant you are and stupid too. the objective isn't to make it as complicated as possible. That's pure stupidity to think that. Why don't you spend some time informing yourself instead of foolishly acting like you already know?

  • @ssnoc
    @ssnoc Před 2 lety

    I never understood why they can’t make a mirror on Myler or some other thin material - why does it need to be on some insanely heavy thick glass? It’s just a reflective surface - guess I just don’t get it …

    • @yaddahaysmarmalite4059
      @yaddahaysmarmalite4059 Před 10 měsíci

      Take some time to learn about telescopes. a thin mirror would flex too easily. you'd never get an image in focus. do you even know what mylar is made out of?
