Jet Waco - Behind the Scenes with RAD Aerosports

- One of the most unusual airplane modifications ever made is the jet-powered Waco biplane. In this video, owner and pilot Jarrod Lindemann gives us a tour of this one-of-a-kind aircraft, which has enough thrust to accelerate in a vertical climb going straight up! We also get the tour of how the Jet Waco travels from show to show - you may be surprised how they do this.
Special thanks the RAD Aerosports team for providing access to the airplane and their team.

Special thanks also to Adam Cotton for allowing me to incorporate his AirVenture 2021 footage of the Waco and Yak performance.

I have to admit I wasn't too excited about this part of the airshow at Oshkosh until it flew by. But, something about the SOUND of this aircraft just made everyone grin. Seeing a biplane followed by the sound of the turbine combined with the radial is just so incongruous that it makes you smile. It makes me think of a kid zooming around a model airplane making engine noises. It was definitely a highlight of the show. If they ever perform near you, go see the show. Like an afterburner fly-by, you don't get the full experience in a video.
Thanks, Brian. I agree - the sight of a biplane with a radial engine AND the sound of a jet engine just don't compute for most of us. It's part of what makes it so special.

I am just now seeing this in 2023. What an incredible aircraft...not sure if its still touring or not, but would love to see it!
Oh yes, it's still flying in airshows. Probably not during the cold season...
Here is their website: www.radaerosports.com
They don't seem to have the 2024 show schedule published yet, but it should be there early next year.

Very cool stuff appreciate you putting it out there
Love it Martin. That YAK was also pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Preston. Yes, two very special airplanes!

Great show Martin!
That's pretty cool!
Martin, was fun to meet you at EAA and now see your video on the Jet Waco and RAD Aerosports, great job... thanks for putting in a clip of the truck driver....
That handsome truck driver smiling from the cab is the best part of this video, Scott! 👍
Thank you so much for making the introduction to the Lindemann family, and see you in Oshkosh 2022!

Jimmy Franklin had the first jet Waco. I helped with the jet engine install.
Wow! What a machine.
Yup!
Thanks Martin! Very interesting!
You are welcome - glad you found it interesting.
- Martin
What a unique airplane, thanks for the upload, all the best
Very unique indeed!
- Martin
fantastic video Martin, very interesting & enjoyable to watch - love your work & thanks
Thank you very much!

WOW WOW WOW... I'm so glad the EAA showed this live at Oshkosh. Just amazing to watch. I would love to someday see it perform live. So much prep work both ways. How do you guys survive financially? You must charge to put on a show. Thank you Martin for making this video, and thank you Jarret for taking the time to give us a tour of this very unique plane. I fly an RC yellow Waco. Horizon Hobby should 3D scan your plane like they did Draco. They could put in an EDF for the jet. I would buy one.
Hopefully you'll get a chance to see (and hear!) this jet-powered Waco in person sometime, Robert!

I saw this aircraft perform at Luke when it was known as the Screamin Sasquatch and it made my jaw drop. That was about 5 years ago and I still think about it to this day and have never seen a performance like it. Didn't do all of the crazy aerobatics that you'd see someone like Kirby Chambliss do but what it did and could do was definitely memorable!!!!
This is a really good video and Jarrod Lindemann seems like a pretty down to earth guy and really does a good job of explaining the aircraft. I am disappointed that there was no mention of the "Original" Jet WACO that was created by airshow legend Jimmy Franklin, that this aircraft designed after (almost replicated). It was Franklin's idea back in the 1980s to put a jet-engine on a WACO (at a time when there were no jets added to experimental planes, and everyone told him it was impossible). Just wished that some credit would be given to the real mastermind behind this concept. If you haven't heard of Jimmy Franklin, check out his work, you'll be glad you did.
Great video. I have seen the Yak perform at Mather at a dusk performance it was amazing.
I agree - it's quite a sight AND sound!
- Martin
nice video....really liked the pleasing on the eyes and ears video and audio quality.
Thank you, Rusty.

When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was one of Bryan Turner's handiworks in Photoshop, like the Cirrus on floats. Turns out it's real!
👍☑️Tks Martin, love the new radical music (by Martin Pauly standards that is).
Yes, it's a bit different than my usual choices, but to is this jet-powered Waco - so I hope it's a good match.

Hello Martin from Sydney Australia.
An acrobatic plane business.
Thankyou for explaining the logistics, just for one plane.
"What a performance envelope"
Could be competitive with the F-35
Best wishes from "down under".
🌏🇦🇺
I don't see it outrunning the F-35, but the thrust-to-weight ratio is probably similar (or maybe even better in this Waco?).

Kool
Great video! I hear what he is saying but man that exhaust sure looks like it is pointed downwards even in level flight.
I'm gonna weld a Jet Engine to the WACO, Hold My Beer!
Hi Friends excellent video
Why does the Jet-Waco turbine tube have that angle and is it not a straight tube like the YAK 110 turbine tube?
You'd think with all of those snap acrobatic maneuvers that it would place exponentially more frequent side loading on the turbine engine bearings from precessive torque?
I do not know how much wear this causes - but it does seem to work.
- Martin
@@martinpauly Oh, I'm not saying it doesn't. I'm just speculating on the possible deviation from expected average wear and tear from normal operation (straight/level flight)?
I'm gonna weld these 2 YAKS together.........Hold My Beer!
I hope I'll get a closer look at the Yak(s) sometime, too. Another really cool airplane!
- Martin
Wait, what the heck was that flying with the Waco at 9:20?!
That was a very special Yak. Well, TWO Yaks, to be precise.
- Martin
Wonder how much it costs to have Jet Waco appear in your airshow. (Didn't see any prices of their website.) Excellent video!
I can't seem to find an airspeed for this thing anywhere. Anybody know?
I did not ask about airspeed... Having said that, I doubt it's very fast. A biplane with all those fly wires is very draggy. The powerful engines are more about adding/maintaining energy during aerobatics maneuvers than flying fast.
- Martin
Jimmy Franklin's Old Waco ?
I grew up in, what I believe is, the oldest Waco fly-in location in the country in Ohio. There are two that I'm aware of, but the one in Mt Vernon is the oldest as far as I'm aware. Maybe someone knows differently.
If this doesn’t scream what EAA is about nothing does
And if best tugs wasn’t sponsoring this team I’d be shocked cause this is mikes wheelhouse for sure🤣
Exactly - it's the 'E' in 'EAA', right?
- Martin
😁
Martin, why do you have Chuck Schumer as an ad on your channel?
Craig, the way CZcams (or social media in general) works is the ads are chosen for the viewer, not for the video. It's very different from broadcast TV, where all viewers see the same ads. I have no influence over what ads CZcams selects.
Hope this helps!
- Martin
@@martinpauly HAHAHA. Yeah, it does help. I just thought that was funny. Good to know, though, thank you.
Nice video, but it would have been better to leave out the techno music and let the radial provide the soundtrack to the flying. :)
So unless this is the same Waco there is another one that is sponsored by jack links with a jet engine and we bought our L2-A from that guy.
If you actually watch the video, Jarrod talks about the Jack Links origin in the first minute.
- Martin
I guess I miss that but in that case we bought a warbird from the original owner haha.
@@martinpauly lol I’m eating some right now watching this 😂
Just a “copy cat” of Jim Franklin’s Jet Waco!
Sorry but I gotta say! What a terrible thing to do to a nice Tapperwing!
