    My first impression /crazy theory about the info we've been given is: The bandits are hired mercenaries / guard for white mantle (or perhaps another cultist group) who have taken up residence at the Bloodstone Fen. The "town" they have mentioned is a bandit hive / buffer zone used to cloak their activities from even those most prodding of investigations. The screams and flashes of light that are heard at night are sacrifices being made atop the bloodstone. Perhaps (much like the Mursaat before them) they are trying to hold a gate / rift closed from which denizens of the Mists / the Underworld / Real of Torment are attempting to escape into Tyria. Or perhaps they are trying to OPEN a gate / rift to wherever the Mursaat fled, to allow their masters to return to a dragon-weary Tyria. The ghosts are similarly perhaps the spirits of Chosen sacrificed upon the bloodstone from previous centuries, which is why they would be mad at the White Mantle for their deceit if only they could remember? Just a thought. :)

    I think the "I know what they did." is referring to the bandits/White Mantle past the wall, who could be sacrificing new people on the bloodstone, which would account for all the new bodies and ghosts.
    EDIT: Full on theory. White Mantle and Bandits are sacrificing people on a bloodstone, creating all these new ghosts. They're doing this to give energy to some sort of Mursaat weapon, or maybe evenf or Lazarus.

      +Matei Armanasu I was thinking that since there seems to be so many souls maybe most of them were stored somewhere and the wave of energy released them (unless the bandits had a steady supply of sacrifices -but then why were they talking about what to do with the prisoners if they usually sacrifice them?).
      But you are right they can't come from the blloodstone

    If I have to guess, I'd say that what we are seeing here with the Ghosts is the beginning of what was fortold in the books inside the Hidden Arcana living story updates.
    As the magic from the Elder Dragon starts to flow through the world uncontained it causes chaos and preciptates the world into darkness, the ghosts in here being just the start and maybe a sign that other worlds past the Mists, like the Underworld in this case, are starting to spill into Tyria.

    Thanks for covering this. I'm not a raider so I wouldn't see all this on my own. It's nice to see someone being as thorough with exploration and the lore as I would be.
    I'm very excited for the potential White Mantle and Mursaat tie-in. I think ArenaNet does a good job of environmental storytelling with things like these notes that leave things up to the player's imagination.

  • @GiantJohnson
    @GiantJohnson Před 8 lety +5

    Note: "... they merge together to form a stronger entity."
    One of the last notes: "If they're not careful, this little experiment of theirs will backfire." Note that the bandit is not referring to the bandits' experiment, but "theirs". This could refer to the White Mantle.
    Second freed prisoner: "He was taken away by soldiers. They looked different." White Mantle?
    "He said they could do what they want with him if they spared the rest of us."
    So, if you put these pieces together, I think maybe they're referring to the next raid encounter. The White Mantle have been experimenting with merging souls together with the Pact Leader and it might have gone horribly wrong.
    They might not be merging spirits together with the Pact Leader, the note could simply be referring to Gorseval, but I think it's safe to say that the White Mantle is performing experiments on him.

    That does strike me as odd that the "River Stix" is now flowing through reality, perhaps some kind of rift was torn when the energy from the windstorm collided with whatever the Bandits/Mercs were doing with the Bloodstone.
    Maybe the White Mantle is trying to bring the Mursaat back by connecting the Meguuma Jungle/Wastes with the Isles of Janthir. All those souls from the river, if utilized would probably create some kind of super-uber soul battery or... Gorseval LVL 9001.

    Sooo... maybe it all ties in back to Exalted and Mursaat? It's kinda crazy theory but maybe Mursaat ARE Exalted (but Exalted are not always Mursaat) and White Mantle knows that Bloodstone can be used to create their own Exalted/Mursaat so they experiment on Pact soldiers and their own people, trying to figure out the way to do it (so pact soldier souls are supposed to supply energy/magic to create Exalted from White Mantle people).

    • @V3rthiss
      @V3rthiss Před 8 lety

      Or maybe even there are some Mursaat there with the White Mantle? (and we will be able to tell just by looking at them that Mursaat are Exalted? But maybe we will need this mini-ascension thing we did in LS S2 to even see them?)

  • @davekat

    The story builds the idea that as we kill elder dragons, the world suffers in ways we don't yet comprehend. Bad things will continue to happen as the world becomes oversaturated with magic. I would not be suprised that in season 3 and onward the world starts going to hell. Or the realm of torment. Fire Island Chain raid?

    windstorm theory: if the shock wave was mordramoth death perhaps it did go everywhere but unpercieved until it reached the vale. here the altered magic state amplified it/pulled it into Tyria proper (like the soul river being here it could be a thin spot to the mists) and thus only this area experience it as a windstorm.
    I mean there really wasn't a Shockwave with zhaitan

    WP, if many of our suspicions are confirmed and the "soldiers" the bandits refer to are indeed the true White Mantle remnants, do you think that this was ANet's original idea of "really cool plans for the Mursaat" that they referred to waaaaay back before GW2 even launched? This would indicate that they had planned for releasing raid content wayyy back!! But maybe their perspective on cool plans for the Mursaat have changed since then. I for one am dying to fight Lazarus once more and would also love to see if any connections would be drawn lore-wise between the Mursaat and the Exalted like you've stated in previous videos. I mean come on, they can't just ignore the fact that there are TWO golden winged floating races in their lore now, in the same general vicinity (Maguuma), and with similarly described cities. There has to be some sort of association or interaction of some kind right?! Ley-line energy, Bloodstone, Bandits, Sacrifices, Hardcore group content?! I mean come on what better way to introduce the Mursaat into the game than right now!

  • @LyrWar
    @LyrWar Před 8 lety +1

    Hey WP,
    About the soul rivers appearing in Tyria :
    In GW2 because of WvW/PvP being part of the lore, we have the idea that Tyria is now strongly affected by the Mists, and that we have an easy access to them. But also that they distort reality (thus creating different worlds that fight in WvW).
    The link with the rivers of souls would be that : the Mists have changed since the Gods went MIA. Wouldn't there be a link between the current state of the Mists in GW2 and the fact that they would affect Tyria more than before, maybe causing things like rivers of souls to appear?
    I think most of the WvW/PvP lore will remain an explanation for features of the game, and not have any kind of impact on the story. But we've had a LOT of hints towards the Mists being in shambles, since launch. Do you think exploring the Mists, and maybe figuring out what happened with them, will ever become an actual storyline? Maybe through Dessa's researches? Or maybe is that linked to the dragons' awakening?

    16:50 - 'I don't know what they did' - could they be sacrificing souls to the bloodstone that then become part of the river? Possibly, Mordremoth's pulse of magic broke a soul battery, releasing a wave of souls that flooded through the Spirit Vale. I didn't play GW1. Would his be possible lore-wise?

  • @SindexMorganus
    @SindexMorganus Před 8 lety +2

    I am actually kind of surprised you did bring up other ghost related incidents that have occurred through out Kryta itself. For instance one of the big ones recently was the one with Belinda's unit in Kessex Hills. Completely unrelated to anything related to the Foefire that occurred in Ascalon.
    However my theory is having to do with Lazarus the Dire figuring out a way to extend out his life. Especially since the original PC heroes all those years ago twisted one of his aspects of power. Which he tied up to Justiciar Naveed to keep himself alive during the conflict with the titans. His last statement to you being: "Countless generations will suffer for your actions this day!"
    Using the bloodstone Lazarus could have figured a way to heal what was broken aspect, and extend out his life temporarily. However as time goes by it does either two things. Lazarus needs to ramp up the souls he needs to keep himself alive. Or better yet it's been turning him into a monster over time. Somehow too much of this type of magic he gets from the bloodstone eventually corrupts living or not so living beings. As for the bandits sticking around with him. That simple answer is that Lazarus is promising them either power, or his version of eternal life once he has perfected scheme.
    Also I remember that one Arena Net had some type of plans for the Mursaat a long time ago. The other thing is what former A-net employ (Robert Hrouda) said this during the Queens Jubilee (via the official forums):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    “I originally had the Mursaat/White Mantle as one of the factions. They’re certainly a stronger pick than something like bandits or pirates, but there’s a lot of factors that go into these sorts of things. Creating a new army never before seen is pretty complex and takes a lot of time and iteration. Not only is there a large design cost for it, but art has to create a brand new environment, new armor, new character models, new weapons, and those are not simple tasks either. I played a ton of GW1, so I know their significance. I also knew how much time I had to do this, what my asset request bank was, and knew that I couldn’t do the Mursaat justice… especially with such a small area.
    If I’m gonna do Mursaat and White Mantle, I (as a hardcore GW1 player) would want it to be epic and grand. We haven’t ..forgotten..about them, I just have higher expectations for them than what I was capable of putting out in this release.
    …and yes I’m proud of that reference”
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    Which if you think about it they now have the perfect template model with The Exalted now in game. So they can always re-skin one The Exalted to become a Mursaat.
    Finally story wise it would be interesting to tie this up with what happened during the M.O.X. quest line. The one about the assassination attempts on world leaders that you foiled but never found out who was really behind it. Probably even find out what actually happened to Saul D'alessio as an added bonus. Of course this is all speculation. Arena Net could come up with their own spin on things. Hopefully either more exiting and less anticlimactic then some of their lore payoffs have been lately.

    I think the one about "they came from the compound I know what they did" probably is the bandit leaders (sure Sabetha leads the forces, but who really decides what goes on on the other side of the wall?)... anyway, the leaders sacrificing souls but for some reason the people have unfinished business so they stick around. Possible more in depth would be the soul batter (that's the assumption, why else do they need good souls?) is that it doesn't charge if the souls come back as ghosts, so the bandits need soldiers. Remember the battery needs worthy people, so that's why they only took the pact leader(s).......

  • @ven9115
    @ven9115 Před 8 lety

    I've got a few silly theories.
    1. Something to do with Mordebutt, nothing exciting.
    2. Something to do with Glint's Egg?! Perhaps these bandits are aware of the egg and what it could do/become O_o. Still don't know who's voice that was giving the Master of Peace the egg. Whoever, or whatever, it was, could be out there somewhere.
    3. We haven't seen "E" (i mean heard from) in a long time. Perhaps the bandits got em, or he is actually a bad guy this whole time. Doubt this one, since E will most likely be tied with the Living Story.
    4. Something to do with Rytlok. Perhaps him returning as left a rift somewhere which has been allowing souls to escape, doubt this too though, since that seems to recent. I figure the ghosts have always maybe been there, but suddenly just have become more active.
    5. This one I think is the closest thing that could be, and also be interesting at the same time, since it would deal more with GW1 story, rather than living story. I want the Murssat to return sooooo much, but lets just go with this, and forget about them returning. What if the White Mantle are now freeing the souls from the Bloodstone to build themselves an army. Maybe at first things were going well too. But then after Mordebutt died, his magic just sent everything haywire. The reasons the bandits are afraid of the souls learning "the truth" is because, if they are affiliated with the White Mantle in some way, these ghosts would realize how they were betrayed and murdered, and that their killers were living right above them. Also that one note said " 'HE' can't control them" are they suggesting someone else could be in charge? Or is this some random dude who's just in charge of the experiments?
    Could also be this place has been here for a very very long time, but that seems unlikely. To at least anyone who played GW1, i think we would have seen a place like this. The only human structure I remember really ever seeing in the Jungle was a temple to Balthazar, but I'm pretty sure thats then event in the Tarir map. I'm curious where this will go, hope even if it's not part of the living story, it's still important.

    theory: i dont really think the bandits who took the commander will be like supercharged or something i rather they looked different like in other clothes and like said we are dangerously close to the bloodstone so i think the white matle took the commander to the stone wich would be wing 2 and whatever they summon from the bloodstone will be the main enemy in the rest of the raid.
    also about the ghosts it might be those are old humans who helped us in guildwars 1 or ghosts of the victims from the bloodstone from before.... that ghost thing is a doozy

  • @FrontierChampion
    @FrontierChampion Před 8 lety

    If you were a human character he / she spesificly say that those spirits died long ago, way before the war... (mabye refering to krytan civil war? Possibly traced back to gw1 timeline). A charr character will note that the entrance to the spirit woods are human mass graves.

      aggro is determined by toughness

    • @whyisthisathingnow...
      @whyisthisathingnow... Před 8 lety

      Yeah, also it would be impossible to beat an engi's condi dps on anything other than a berserker condi war (on Gors anyways). Unless the engie is being slack I suppose. How do you find Scrapper tank though? Sounds pretty good, I've done runs with a chrono tank but I think I did one Gors run with scrapper that went well enough. :)

    could the white mantle be making soul batteries on the bloodstone

    • @Sorann14
      @Sorann14 Před 8 lety

      +Daniel Barragan If it's the White Mantle keeping soul batteries charged, what would they be using the soul batteries for? In the original Guild Wars, the soul batteries were used to keep the Door of Komalie closed, but that's located on the Fire Island Chain, far away from the location of the raid. Personally, I think it might have something to do with bringing Lazarus the Dire back.

    like: we defeated 2 dragons *bam* more magical energy for everyone
    also, do we know the race of the squad leader? maybe it's a silvary :O

    WP, aren't foefire ghosts and normal ghosts different things?

    • @V3rthiss
      @V3rthiss Před 8 lety +3

      +SquirrelTeamSix Ascalonian ghosts seem to be different from normal because they were pulled out of their bodies before their death. Maybe sacrificing on the bloodstone works in similiar way, it's not normal death, it's pulling soul out of the body. That would explain strange behaviour of the ghosts created this way. They sometimes think they are still alive because they didn't experience death.

    I'm endlessly frustrated with raids. I'm trying to find a good guild, but I always end up with people who want me to make 50g worth of changes for a 'maybe we'll bring you along sometime.' It's really my fault, though. I didn't bother looking for guilds or trying to make friends for 3 years, I lurked and played alone.

      +biofrog this is what I´m thinking too, they could open up the raid wing in this fashion for everyone, for example when the next wing is released. That way, everybody would be able to see the lore and areas after the raid was essentially cleared by others.
