navigation or not should never be a topic for a car. Engine, suspension, transmission and if time allows sure radio etc talk.
agreed
Haha this video is so old
Agreed
he sold his RS4 for a Hummer and he wants us to listen to his opinion on cars....
fuzzytraveler watch it again. He sold his B6 S4 (V8) for a Hummer. But yeah, still a bonehead decision.
+fuzzytraveler My thoughts exactly.
+crossphaded I'm pretty sure Matt owns plenty of other cars that can fill the spot the Audi left. On the other hand, an h1 is well an h1.
Nate Miller me not la
Made my stomach hurt when he said that
Sold is s4 for a hummer h1? Wtf man???
Right ?!? That's like breaking up with Annabella Sciorra to date Roseanne lol
@ndavis80 how do you expect us to smoke the tires in two All Wheel Drive cars?
@DrJCCC20 it remains to be seen whether the V8 will fit in this platform, but I guess we'll see.
@traxxasslash26 their build quality is stellar, but out-of warranty maintenance on them can get very expensive, as with all German luxury cars. Plus, I have seen some electrical problems in some of the newer models.
@brannyK051 yes, they will, since we are no longer using Next New Networks's software.
@AlecTheJimSlayer421 we have 3 different ones we rotate through randomly, and we're working on a 4th now.
@ndavis80 if you would like to pay for us to rent a race track or to close roads so we can drift cars around corners, please make all checks out to The Smoking Tire, LLC. Until then, its way out of our budgets so either enjoy the content we do make, or watch another show.
@mishocker it's just for display on the front. The rear plate is standard issue california
@AdemJashari56 This only seems to be a problem with the "S" and "RS" models. I haven't heard of any "A" models having the same issue.
I love how much Craig talks about his ex wife. Shit cracks me up.
Frankly Im not surprised she ditched that douche of a man. He makes me cringe every time he opens his mouth.
@sspope yes, that is true, the Sport differential is optional.
@duework12 craig makes car videos, sometimes for himself and sometimes with us. He's a good dude. Not really into movies anymore though.
@appl2noe we just uploaded, it takes a few hours to process. check back later.
RS4 is a masterpice. 2022 but i dream at this car everyday. work of art
@quincy965 If you can only have one car, a sport wagon is an awesome choice. Fly below the radar, hold tons of stuff, very few compromises
@leonardomoses Not true. In production right now are the TTRS and RS6
@colenbrak that's why I wanted it. Because it was different. Turns out it was so different, I only kept it for a few months because I couldn't find anyone to work on it.
@privatealpha You can only hear the blower with the radio off, windows closed, and engine above 4,000 RPM. Besides that, nothing.
@andrej207 we are 2 guys with a budget of $100 per episode, total, including gas and lunch. If you would like to pay for a race track for us to do performance testing, please make all checks out to The Smoking Tire LLC.
@TamiyaDude who said anything about closed roads?
@naikmichel wagons are awesome, because they add nearly everything you get with a sport utility vehicle, but with the driving dynamics of the sedan. Plus, they fly below the police radar.
Wrong! Wagons don't look good or sexy and that's why people buy "Sports Sedans / Coupes" over a homely Wagon.
@TVRFan11 I had one for 5 months and couldn't stand it, so I traded it in for my Mini, which I have since sold.
These guys spent so much time on little shit like navigation and the armrests and the sound
why dont they actually talk about the suspension and the gearing and the handling instead of babbling about the stupid satnav
Because they don't know the mechanics of the cars they drive... They are just journalists trying to sound like they know the car. The set up in the RS4 is awesome. All that weight at the front end and yet the balance around corners with the 4 wheel drive system is epic.
Because that's what the buyers focus on, duh...
Craig that the most negative thing bout the car -It's the nose heaviness regardless beeing quattro or not
These comments are 2 years old but ok.... My point was the fact even though it is nose heavy you wouldn't notice as the balance and handling of the car is amazing. Put it around a track with any of its class rivals and it would go round the corners just as good if not better then its rivals. Hats off to the engineers.
Craig idk bout the corner handling, driving a B6 myself btw
I have an 2010 S4, it's amazing. I love the handling the jump from the supercharger. The mileage is quite decent for a "luxury/sports car".
I have a 2005 S4 Cab. I love it, but reliably is an issue, but I keep fixing it and enjoying
I'm watching this today as I miss my former S4s. I had a 2010 & 13 of which I drove 70,000 km per year as an accident investigator. I would get called out any time of the day to an accident scene, With winter tires this car was unstoppable, Thanks for bringing back the memories.
that RS4 badge is completely out of position!
@kinderutz if they aren't gripping, yes. that's exactly what they do. The power goes to whatever wheels have the most grip.
@crazyfabio1 we don't have them in the US.
@350Zed I'm sorry, but people don't realize how hard we work just to make the videos that do get made. Given our tiny crew of 2 and our budget of $0, it's amazing they get made at all. I'm glad our production quality is on par with much bigger budget stuff, but people constantly expect things of us that are way out of our budget just because our shots look great. We do everything we can every time we can to keep you guys informed and entertained.
@racewithferrari S4, the interior is much more interesting, the seats are better, and the AWD system is superior to BMW's. Only way I'd take the bimmer is if I wanted to put a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it, as that engine has more tuning potential.
@tinleo333 SUV's/Crossovers are just wagons with big tires and shitty driving dynamics.
It would be nice to see a comparison between the 2003 RS6 and 2015 S6.
B6 s4 for a h1 hummer? Tf
@trwsandford I'd like to keep getting him on camera in the future, yes.
I just traded in my 2010 S4 (with all the options) for an 2007 RS4. It was a really difficult trade off. Despite the similar appearances, they are very different cars. The S4 is refined in a way the RS4 isn't. That being said, the RS4 just puts a smile on your face when you drive.
Here's my list:
S4:
- DCG gearbox is amazing, but like any automatic, a bit boring. It's also a bit scary when you consider maintenance costs.
- Longer wheelbase is a bit unwieldy around town.
- Looks more like a luxury car than a sports car.
- Can be tuned to around 400HP for a couple thousand dollars.
- Supercharged V6 has more torque than RS4 V8.
- Awesome touring car. You can live in this thing.
- A few more inches of legroom in back row.
- Torque distribution is mind blowing. It will basically turn into a RWD if you want it to.
- Respectable gas mileage. I've gotten slightly over 30MPG on a 20 mile trip.
- Surprising power. I've blown past cars at 140mph on a 5% uphill grade with no effort.
RS4:
- V8 is awesome. The sound, the high RPMs. The real win here is the upgrade potential. $12K will net you a supercharger that can boost it to 600HP.
- Shorter wheelbase makes it feel more maneuverable, especially in the parking garages where I dinged the wheels on my S4 more than once.
- Great looking stance.
- Not a good touring car. You'll be exhausted after a hundred miles.
- Has more understeer than S4, esp at low speed (tires will shudder around tight corners).
- Gas mileage isn't something you want to think about.
- The interior feels shitty compared to S4 (mine is almost 4 years older, but age isn't all of it).
- Power. Holy shit. Someone in a new WRX tried to race me from a light a few days ago. By the time I shifted into second gear he was at least 3 car lengths behind, by third I could barely see him anymore (I think he gave up about 1/8 mile back).
At the end of the day, I had some remorse over letting go of the S4, but then I realized that I'd put more miles on the RS4 in the first two weeks I owned it than I had in the last two months of owning the S4. It's just that much fun to drive. I literally drive for no reason other than to wind the engine out. Also, I was extremely concerned about maintenance costs on the S4. The DCG transmission, the sports differential... I'm guessing had I held onto it past 100K I'd have regretted it. The RS4 is relatively basic by comparison, and therefore likely to be cheaper to maintain.
If you want a great touring car with respectable power, the B8 S4 is hard to beat. If you want raw power with a lot of upgrade potential, choose the RS4.
+Cliff Wells The problem is the RS4 has that V8 with the timing chains against the firewall. That thing is known to have bad expensive problems. Don't get me wrong, it's a nicer car than the S4, but if you want a reliable audi sports sedan a *manual* B8 S4 is the way to go. The DSG does nullify that a bit as it is failure prone and expensive to fix, but the V8 will cost you a lot more when (not if) those timing chains go wrong.
NorfKhazad I did some research on your claim, and it appears that the timing chain issues are solely applicable to the B7 S4, not the B7 RS4. The 24V V8 in the S4 has plastic guides, the 30V V8 in the RS4 has plastic covered metal guides and doesn't have the same issues.
Further, even for the S4, it appears that these concerns are overstated and result from improper maintenance (e.g. following VAG's stupid 10k oil change intervals rather than the more reasonable 3-5k intervals that most enthusiasts adhere to) or from driving the car too hard when it's cold.
The only known issues for the RS4 relate to the cross-linked suspension, which is typically solved with aftermarket coilovers (already done on my car), a weak clutch slave cylinder (also resolved with aftermarket parts), and rusting issues along the bottom of the doors (mine has a bit of this, although you can't see it unless you lay on your back).
The only articles I could find relating to RS4 timing chains were S4 owners wanting to replace their parts with the improved RS4 parts.
Interesting. I did a bit of reading myself and it sounds like you're correct that the only major issue is the suspension. That puts a B7 RS4 on my list along with the B8 S4. I'll have to see if I can find one to take for a spin at some point. I assumed since they both had the 4.2 V8 that they would have the same issues, but I'm glad I was wrong. Thanks!
are these fake comments? people being helpful in youtube comments? what in the world is happening, the end is nigh etc etc.
good info though gents : )
When the DSG goes bad (it will), expect to dish out >4000USD for the repair
@robm425 I have 10 TST shirts, and I represent Team Hemicuda because I like how they play the game. As for whether they win, that's something that I know but I'm not telling.
LOL no rear shots of the car whatsoever that's a joke
Needing oil after 1500 miles? Something wrong there, i go from service to service without my B6 S4 needing any
Great episode Matt, been watching you guys since the G419 days, and I can definitely say the show is evolving into something truly awesome. Keep up the great work.
My B6 S4 breaks my wallet sometimes, but whenever I think about selling it just puts me in a sour mood. I adore Audis, and will undoubtedly own more, but i'm holding on to that B6 as long as I can.
I've got one ('04) too. I've got 48K on it and bought it new in August. of 2004. I've been fortunate so far. My '07 RS4 isn't running right so I've parked it until I can get some more info on what comes up as a random cylinder mis-fire? It's been great until the day I started it in the garage and it didn't sound right. I cut it off & bought one of those plug in readers to just get an idea of what was going on? It's only got 45K so I'm hoping it's not something too terrible. The day before it did this the check engine light came on but it was running as normal so I thought I'd get the diagnose plug in thing and just see. Then the next day before it arrived the weird start and sound so I turned it right off. I got to the the passenger air bag replaced so I'm thinking just have it hauled to the dealer. BTW, I thought I had the air bag fixed as I took it to the dealer and they performed the replacement. They just forgot to tell me it was a temporary fix and I still had to get the final fix. I only found out because I kept getting notices in the mail so I called Audi and they called me back telling me Birmingham Audi only did a temporary fix. I can't help but think this is pretty lame on the dealership's part as well as Audi who was hounding me to get it fixed so I made an appointment. Never was it told before or after my car was still dangerous as far as the passenger airbag.
@@johnwerner4925 I've gotten misfires due to hitting the 8250 rpm fuel cutoff. If you suspect this may be the case, just clear the code (and shift sooner). If the car actually isn't running right, it may be time to check for carbon buildup (45k miles is about right for that maintenance). Expect to pay about $1200 for that.
@Mitch1856 both of these cars have all wheel drive. You'd have to be massively abusive to either of them to get tire smoke.
@350Zed race tracks are expensive, prohibitively so in most cases. Besides, anyone with a computer and google can look up the drag numbers, which I have (RS4: 4.7/13.2@106, S4: 4.9/13.2@106).
@dman2509 yeah, because the "professionals" on those british shows dont use the word "cock" ten times per episode.
@TVRFan11 H1's are extremely cheap. I bought mine, a pretty nice 2001 Black Wagon with 55k miles, for $42k in 2006.
Great vid, pleasure to watch. Thanks boys!
Dissing his ex wife. Haha, I love this guy.
I can't believe it's been almpst 10 years since I saw this video last time
we are getting old
@FiFtY2303 it's registered in California. The euro plate is for decoration only.
Man, your videos are awesome!
thx for the good work :) I'm not to used to such good low budget rewiews from the usa. keep going :)
Loved the episode ! 6:58 awesome camera shot ! Keep it up
Great episode, guys. Love that Craig was on camera. Keep forcing him there... he did awesome!
Watching this in 2017, Holy Cow those side burns Matt! Superb!
"Douchebag Factor"
LMAO.
I love comparisons like this. Great video!
@TheRotaryVlog no
Even after all these years this early smoking tire stuff is still absolute quality
Great video guys! thanks for all the info!!!!!!!!!
HOW have I never seen this, I've clicked on every video on your channel...you mysterious smoking tire you
So i just found this video, no idea why it showed up in my feed today. And then I just realized that is Craig Lieberman lol.
@vitto Because we could. And the RS5 isn't out yet.
Saw the car on L4P, love it Craig. Great video.
this is what i've been waiting for!
I will love to see b5 rs4 vs b7 rs4 :)
@tropickman the V8 was a great engine, but it had two very major drawbacks. Completely abyssmal fuel economy and lots of weight in the nose of the car. On a canyon road, even without the beautiful V8 sound, the new S4 was much more fun to drive.
that audi engine 4.2 have one of the best engine sound ever.
10 years later and still great content
Good review, thanks!
@TheSmokingTire - Yup that was the solution! That's why I've watched every single video you guys have put out.
Thumbs up yet again guys!
trying to decide between b8 s4, s6, or b7 rs4. I feel like each car has its ups and downs and being in the midwest its hard to come by exactly what you want. Maybe just wait for a little more hp in the s6.
What year s6? Repairs on that thing have an astronomical price tag. Just a single headlight assembly is well over $1k. Maybe depends on a specific one, but it's very sensitive (throws in different fault codes occasionally)
i very much like this style of review ... good vid matt...
thats craig lieberman from fast and furious
@VRTEGO75 in 2007, when the RS4 was released, it was the fastest Audi in production. That's what he meant.
Subscribed!!!
Great vid... not many reviewers will point out the flaws of high budget cars (not that there are tons in most but they are there) along with the benefits. Any reviewer will tell you all about the flaws of a 15 thousand dollar car but never netion those of a 50 thousand dollar one. Keep it up I love the honesty. After watching a couple of honest reviews like this on cars you admit to liking I subscribed.
I remember watching this 10 years ago 😂😂🤣
@TheSmokingTire Keep up the good work!
Another great episode Matt!
Craig was a surprise, well spoken and insightful. Is he going to be a permanent addition to the show?
Great review guys, I would love to have an RS4 Avant
@afgr173 hopefully they aren't douchebags, like most M3 drivers I see on the street.
that E-brake armrest battle has been raging since the 90's! My 1993 S4 has the same exact issue, but since im always shifting, and usually have a dog in the back seat, the upright arm rest is a great buffer anyways
+m8sullivan I have a b6 s4, never noticed it lol. My biggest complaint is the cup holders suck.
I've had 2 S4s a 2010 then a 2013. Neither car burned any oil. Both were great winter cars. I drive 60,000 km per year therefore I only keep them for 2 years. I miss my S4s much better car than my current S3. Thanks for the great video men.
I ''love'' it how that submariner special edition is ''strategically'' placed on the right wrist closer to the camera.
I have owned a 2006 S4 SW for a few years now. She has 220k kms on the clock but a FULL service history and the cam chain followers have been sorted too. She makes horrible fuel mileage but I simply LOVE to drive her!! The ultimate long distance cruiser. Mine is auto and has the light grey Recaro seating plus a sunroof, LOVELY old car. And ps you forgot to mention that the spares for my car are fairly cheap and readily available, not so for the RS cars.
Moaning about the Bose stereo quality when driving the V8 makes no sense to me!
Alfa_Driver It sounds pretty good honestly once you have a proper audio source and not FM radio. But yes, totally agree!
I bought an Android head unit (Xtrons, looks close to stock), but it's just for navigation. The V8 is the only appropriate music for this car.
@@wellscliff I went on to own a B7 S4 Avant after this video, and I don't know what that guy Craig is going on about, the Bose system sounded fine! Sold it and driving other things now 😁
@@ironingbored It all depends on what you're used to. Going from the B&O system in the B8 S4 to the Bose in the B7 RS4 made the difference in audio quality painfully apparent. If you're happy with the Bose, don't listen to a B&O. It'll save you money ;-)
But the fact is, the Bose system sounds much better than the Concert systems in other Audis of the era, so it's certainly not bottom of the heap by any means.
@@wellscliff agreed, compared to something more modern like a B&O system or Bowers & Wilkins, the B6/B7 Bose shows its age. However, the noise from the NA V8 is far superior to the B8s Bi Turbo V6, so it's swings and roundabouts I guess! 🙂
"It has a very low douschebag factor" - Ha! Friggin' hillarious.
1:49 to 1:52 that pearl jam's "alive" tatoo fu****** rocks man, I love the vid, i own a audi s3, but when I saw that tatoo I got really happy!!!
@EatmyDust1311 No, but it's not priced that way. The M5 is $85,000, the CTS-V is $60,000, and the S4 starts at $45,000. Much closer to the BMW 335i than anything else.
Great reviews, I like their perspectives, these are real car guys
Great review. I was surprised to hear that that S4 was burning that much oil being a new car. A quart every 1500 miles is ridiculous.
I've had my b7 RS4 since 2009. My buddy has a 2014 S4 - I've driven both extensively on and off track. There is no comparison between these two cars. The RS4 handles better, brakes better, sounds better, looks WAY better, has more horse power, accelerates better and absolutely destroys the S4 at the top end. A naturally aspirated V8 that revs out at 8,250 rpms with a 70 hp advantage vs. a hopped up A4 with some lazy forced induction, style accents and S lines. The S4 is a mass production car for people who like the idea of owning a sporty car but still have fuel economy in the back of their mind. The b7 RS4 is one of the all time great small sport sedans and will be a sought after collectors car in 20 years. The S4 is just.. well an S4; a car that Audi mass produces every year to appeal to the masses and sell to the masses. Its not special and its not rare. This review is idiotic.
I agree, I love my 2007 RS, the styling is timeless, and even though the B8.5 S4 has more tech, who cares. Lol, the RS4 will be a classic. Mine is bone stock except I ditched the DRC and just threw in Bilteins.
Collectors - for sure... .
+Jared Scharf Lol doing a quick search shows that a 2010 s4 and a 2009 rs4 come up with nearly identical prices, which means if anything its losing value more quickly than its counterpart? collectors my ass lol. You own an old audi that used to be top of the line that just isnt there anymore, get over it. Audi got popular and successful after the fact.
+Hector Espinoza dude don't even comment, there are no 2009 rs4's, you don't even know what your talking about.
2008*
@Karto86 at the time it was released in 2007, it was the fastest car they made.
Craig seems very unlikeable...
LOL
Craig is getting a lot of hate though?
3900 pounds? That's a cheap car lol
Weight...
+S18 jokes
Kevin O'Byrne I had no idea I was actually in the market for an RS4 😆
that matte black miata was pretty gangsta looking. nice cameo
Craig is a awesome addition to the show. he is a very knowledgeable person.
You are absolutely right. The design of the S4 and RS4 is so important and not viewing them from a rear angle during whole 7.39 minutes is ridiculous lack of vital footage.
2021 and still gorgeous.
