I always remember it being ice cold. You’d get it in early.
At about this time I was 14 and did a Saturday morning milk round . The milk float permanently reeked of ancient milk that'd been out in the sun on a hot day . It's surprising we all lived through the 80s .
Andy Nixon I wasn’t born until 1990 but I remember having milk delivered through my childhood. Up to about 2015 when the family sold the business. They had electric floats, but it was always modern vans which came out my way.
@Abu Hajaar god you're right . It was essentially a good idea to give us kids some nutritious milk every day but it'd been out in the sun all day so tasted a bit rank by the time we got it . That nesquik idea was genius , well done .

About 10 years ago when I was still having my milk delivered like this, someone started stealing it from my doorstep! Police eventually caught the thieves. Some young lads were driving around in the early morning taking it from houses in the area. Having a boot full of milk bottles at 5am was no doubt a bit hard to explain. Was it really worth it? People steal anything that´s not nailed down these days.
Some don't get away with quite so much do they!

Well the 'milkman routine' is becoming a rarity in big cities therefore for some people this video might be very exotic and insightful. I certainly haven't seen a milkman in a long time.
I remember my mum leaving coins on the doorstep for the milkman.

I could be mistaken, but I thought that someone who was like a Mod, or a father, once made an observation in a bit of musical commentary about a particular municipality, in which large quantities of vehicles dedicated to the haulage of dairy products were being idled, underutilized and retired to a certain type of property, and shaking off their mechanical mortal coil... or something like that. 😉
Seriously, though - I miss milkmen. My folks had home delivery here in the States in the '70s/very early '80s, and our local dairy (in Tacoma) used Divcos - one of the best-looking commercial vehicles ever designed. It was a dark day when those were retired, almost as much as when the milk stopped appearing magically on the front porch, placed in a little insulated metal box.
Saw a bottle outside a house today, most people get it from their local supermarkets, most milkmen have to deliver food or amazon packages to survive now.
Our road used to get a lot go up and down not so much these days

Except Saturday morning near The Dell in the 70s .... Our milkman was regularly robbed of milk eggs and bread by the visiting football hooligans who didn't consume the stuff. They just threw it around the street. Quite funny to see as a teenager but not do much for Don the Unigate Milky

I remember seeing these milk bottles at my mom and dad's house here in California. It was so awesome seeing the milkman coming to our house and dropping and picking up milk bottles. We would get them probably every other day or two. Maybe three days.

I expected a front door to open and a beautiful blonde lady garbed in a see through negligee to pick the milk bottles up and to invite the milkman in for a cup of tea. It happened all the time in the 1980s, it was a perk of my job, so sad when it all came to an end. It took me three hours to do my round, but I got great job satisfaction.
