There were two moments in my life which made me realise that looking after yourself and dressing well makes a big difference in how people treat you, and sometimes can open doors:
1) At my favourite pub staff completely changed. The old guys who became my friends over time and always made sure I had a table and was treated well were replaced by two quite rude girls. Around that time I started dressing better. A couple of times I popped in to the pub wearing very well fitted polo with nice twill trousers + tassel loafers. Polo was tucked in, belt + one of the watchesmy collection. One of those girls simply stopped me as I was walking out for a cigarrete and started talking. Once the pub was not selling drinks anymore she said that she cannot sell anymore but I can get a couple on the house.
2) I was a part of an IT department and was fixing something for CEO. I did that many times. On that day when I made sure I was dressed well he started asking me about security, as if I was an expert - of course I knew quite a lot, but I was never perceived as such - until I started looking after myself. This has lead to getting more responsibilities in that department.
It seems that man's first reference is himself. How do you present yourself to society? It is worth paying attention to that.
Its amazing how quality shoes can alter the way you feel and are treated.
True
@@RealMenRealStyle
I agree, it receive dozens of compliments of my shoes and suit every time I go out!
Really interesting, thanks for recording this.
I'm in Northamptonshire, England, so I'm surrounded by literally dozens of shoe factories, to suit all kinds of budgets.
There's high-end offerings from the likes of Church's, John Lobb or Crockett & Jones in Northampton, mid-priced yet excellent like Loakes in Kettering, Barker in Earls Barton, to the rugged yet very cool Dr Martens and NPS in Wollaston. Some like Tricker's are nearly 200 years old.
Yet despite this, out and about almost everyone you see is wearing trainers. 😢
Northampton Museum has a huge collection that's well worth a look, though Silverstone's museum is definitely higher octane!
Even as a teenager, growing up in the 2000s the first thing people notice was your shoes.... it says alot about your personality.
As an attorney you can be sure that one's shoes get noticed. I had the audacity to wear my black Captain Thursday boots to court and one of the attorneys noticed and said "Nice boots. Go kick some a$$." Great video on shoes. You are making me rethink my wardrobe given the nature of your channel. Time to binge watch.
I always notice shoes in court. White sole shoes always make me shake my head!
@@waynevendetto5803 Agreed. I have noticed that criminal lawyers wear more ratty shoes than the civil litigation attorneys. Some even wear running shoes. Perhaps they have medical problems such as plantar fasciitis to justify such shoes.
Where is the logic that sneakers look good with a suit? Watching CBS morning one day and Tony was wearing white converse with a really cool suit. It's bad enough that no one's wearing ties anymore but sneakers with a suit?
I agree , wearing a suit with sneakers is silly.
Unfortunately not uncommon on TV
@@rodger7029 you’re right , I see it all too often .
I saw this on the BBC News and it looked ridiculous. It's such a schoolboy look. I used to do this as a teen when the school day was done.
The logic is that nutters wear sneakers with suites, not proper footwear, like Oxfords!
Speaking about ties, hear bout the PM of the UK telling (anger-ly) that they should dress like gentlemen not like slobs!
I *LOVE* traction on the bottom of a dress shoe. When my older son was 3 or 4, i was carrying him down some hardwood stairs, slipped on a step, and went down onto the other ankle, with the extra weight of the kid. He wasn't injured, but I suffered a broken fibula. So to me, traction is king, and I won't wear a new pair of dress shoes without some traction on the ball of the foot (either built into the shoe, or applied myself with sandpaper).
Hey Declinox,
Just a suggestion, whenever I buy a new pair of leather soled shoes before I even wear them I take them to my shoe man and have a Toppy put on them, it's like a hard Nylon liner glued to the sole but it has a grip profile, they protect the leather sole so you only replace the toppy every few years instead of a full re sole which is expensive.
What's your take on Derby shoes?
IMO they could be used to plug the gap between leather sneakers and the more dressier options like loafers or Oxfords. And they're also quite flexible i. e. you can dress them up or down.
Antonio, your 100% correct, the correct shoes are the foundation of our outfit. They are like building a house, if we get the foundations wrong, the house won't last long!
As to the price, we don't have to spend $1,000's on a pair of shoes, as sometimes they are rubbish _(glued)_ and may only last < then three month!
Even some cheap shoes, $NZ136.00 can last as long as a pair of $NZ470 _(Loake 200B)._ I have a pair of Black Capped Oxfords, Brogues Oxfords _(Op-shop)_, both for $NZ5 each, and a pair of whole cut for $20 _(on-line)!_
They say _(today)_ the first thing one sees is the shoes, how well looked after they are! Like going to a job interview, is this person going to look after my clients/products? One can tell by the way the shoes are looked after!
And we should spend the same amount on our outfits as our shoes!
I really do care about my fashion, and tend to try to dress up BUT i care about my foot health more and won't wear any pointy shoes or shoes that scrunch up my toes.
“We don’t dress for comfort, We dress for outcomes”
@@modalsoul6511 it's not about comfort, is about health. Bunions and posture have lifelong ramifications on mobility, foot health, balance and athletic performance.
We all should wear comfortable shoes and with quaint style, not those square toed things, or too pointy things! Yes I agree, *foot-health* is paramount, as I used to wear "cheap" shoes in the past _(25+ years)_ oh the pain!
My main concern too, since I have diabetes. I don't want my precious feet to be cut off, at least up until my mid 60's, and there is a long way for me to that point.
That's fact. It does matter. I even still watch the boot maintenance video.
I think that those of us interested in style and shoes will say such things as women notice your shoes and measure your value in that way. However, I never had anyone say they don't like me or like me because of the shoes. BTW, Jodhpurs are very beautiful. Their history revolves around horses.
Great video again, Antonio! Keep up the great work!!
Great video!
Great video! I really appreciate the historical perspective, I think it's so important to know where things come from and how they became the way they are.
I got some blue double monks straps from Thomas Bird. I was impressed with their construction. The leather felt thick & high quality. Planning to pick up some grey suede boots from them this summer
Paul Evans, Ace Marks, and Now Thomas Bird! Love it Antonio! Thanks...my personal preferences are Paul Evans, Scarosso and soon to be Thomas Bird.
Love Thomas bird! My wife gifted me a pair of oxblood Chelsea boots. I’ve had them for 3 years, and they are still going strong. They require some tlc and they’ll last a long time
I wear Reef slippers. Goes great with anything
The Thomas Bird shoes look great, and I recognize at least one of the models being shown from Instagram :). Will definitely check them out, thanks!
And thank you for this video focused on the key components of footwear for a stylish gent. Great pieces you're recommending!
Used to have all of these except the Chelsea Boots, Now I only have the tassel loafers and penny loafers thanks to wear and tear
Think I'll pick up some Oxfords
I gotcha covered... boom !!!
Woe, shoe be upon ye
I have all these styles except the tassel loafers. I haven’t owned a pair of tassel loafers in years. I liked them back in the day. I thought they went out of fashion like the double breasted suit. I may give them another look.
Tassels are great!
I found a pair on eBay brand new at an extremely reasonable price. Have not had them for years, nor loafers.
Talking about the video sponsor, have anyone used these “Thomas Bird” shoes and the previous sponsor “Ace Marks”?…both brands look very similar in styles and prices 🤔
I have three pairs. Great brand!
I've tried Ace Marks and not a fan of their patinas. I have not tried Thomas Bird yet but the patinas look great on the loafers as well as the shape of the shoes.
Great video, Antonio. I'm more of a Grenson or the less expensive Loake man, but I'll check out Thomas Bird. I don't know about the US, but in the UK, what drives me crazy are guys who spend a fortune on clothes and grooming, but wear cheap, crap looking shoes.
Thomas bird: 2-5 day shipping to EU, taxes included. Nice! Finally a supplier for us Europeans.
Now everyone is wearing On Cloud and Hoka shoes.
Its good to be informed of the history and culture behind fashion wear. What would it say about me if I wore boat shoes like the rest of the fraternity but didnt own a boat, never stepped foot on a boat, and not interested in boats?
Those Thomas Bird shoes look good.
Can you please make a video on casual footwear for spring/summer outfits that consist of shorts, not athletic or lounge shorts, and either a button-up or t-shirt? Proper footwear for an outfit like this that is not dress shoes and that is not athletic shoes or basketball shoes or sloppy sneakers. And I guess too an outfit that would consist of some spring/summer pants as well. I need help in that arena.
Unfortunately the sizes stop at 13.5 and they don't offer wide sizes. I would love a couple of pair of double strap monks but width is always an issue.
Allen Edmonds makes great shoes and offer many different widths. They are running a sale right now - never pay full price for AE unless you absolutely need them now.
I’ve always worn a full break. All these examples are showing trousers cut to high water. Are we supposed to be wearing them that way now or is it still optional?
Never wear athletic footwear with a suite/sports jacket. The only time athletic footwear is appropriate is when you are wearing athletic clothes and on your way to or from working out.
Best part of modernity and footwear is that we have easy ways to keep them from stinking. Way back in the day, wheww, keep them on!
Hey there! I love shoes and being italian I see everyday real pieces of art walking around, BUT: I’m into minimalistic and barefoot shoes and have trouble finding really stylish shoes that allow my toes to wiggle as I wish…no problem on the sport/casual side, NEED SOME HELP on the formal side…🙏🙏🙏
I found shoes from Florsheim on the net, Ordered my size in the with EEE. Perfect for my wide feets and high rise midle of foot. Shoes can be foud in normal wide, E, EE or even wider size. Wish somebody told my that earlier in my life.
Gents
We have heard/seen single and double monk strap shoes! What about triple strapped monk shoes?
I have a pair and they are Goodyear Welted, by Jeffery-West (UK)! No Idea how much there are new!
I have seen triple monk strap boots. Basically chukka boots but with no laces and three buckles.
@@dejuanmcguire9348A slight correction, they are not boots, they are shoes, they don't go past the ankle!
Please make a video about your investments perhaps in etfs or gold and silver :)
That’s just weird
@@mohamedalkaboom why just asking for recommendations not to show us is bank account
There's been so many spirits recently and when my mind isn't in peace that's when I have trouble.
Interesting
You’ve really gotta fix the outrod where the next video never pops up lol
Did you say calf leather
I wear what’s comfortable for me
Tough 🥃🔥
Pajamas
Not too cheap I hope, like a pair of $25 shoes that may last 3 months?
1 year $100, 10 years $1,000! Yes a comfortable pair of shoes is very important, however, do they have the support _(arch)_ that our feet need?
@@jonathonshanecrawford1840 Feet don't need "arch support". Those arches are there to be used.
My dress boots and redwing steel toes are more comfortable than most athletic shoes I have worn. Cheap shoes are cushy pillows at first then after a few months collapse leaving poor support. Old school dress shoes are miserable hard things at first but after 20 hours or so of wear (yes it takes patience) something incredible happens. Leather softens where your foot bends and twists. It stretches and expands around anything tight. The cork between the upper and sole molds to the bottom of your foot. They start to feel.... like they were made for your feet. As if they are suddenly old friends.
@@TroaTravis Thanks 😊
When you wear big lace up boots 80% of the time people who want you to take your shoes off at the door are so annoying, I respect it but it is still annoying.
What's with the extra long toe shoes? They look like something Bozo or Clarabell would wear.
I hate are the brand of shoes shown in the thumbnail?
Air Jordans aren't shoes. They're loot.
In my opinion brown shoes with white soles are the most hideous things.
Shoes by far the most overrated wardrobe item.
Hot take!
So grateful that I found you! Been looking for your type content and method of presentation. Thank you Antonio! @realmenrealstyle
