I think the coolest thing about this song, is that when he asked the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails (the original artists) if he could cover this, the lead singer said he could, but he had to know what if felt like when he originally wrote it, what emotions and stuff he went through to actually cover his song.
And when Johnny came back and showed him the song, he looked at him and said: "You know. You know what it feels like."
Idk if it's true or not, but it's a story I heard from my dad that I find pretty cool :)
Trent Reznor actually was taken aback by Johnny Cash’s version, that Trent wanted Johnny to keep the song. This was Johnny’s last song before he passed away a week later. 😔
You can hear pain in Johnny’s voice when he covered it. I’m going to cover Hurt next. I love this song so much. I can relate to this song…🎸
I haven’t had the guts to sing this song in front of anyone yet. This song is one that holds a lot of strong emotions for me. I lost my dad a few years ago and for much of the year that followed as my mom’s health also faded this song felt like the story of my life.
Pain was all that I had. The pain and sorrow were my close friends. I hated them, but I needed them and this song resonated so powerfully with me.
I have let go of my sorrow and pain on the whole but this song still resonates with me, and probably always will.
Oh do sing it. No matter the quality of your voice, it will be cathartic. I sing it all the time with a Ukulele and it's alsays emotional.
I’m not a big country I mainly like more metal and symphonic but I still Listen to different genres considering the band but this song is one of my favorite songs and I do enjoy a little Johnny Cash now and then when comes to country I like stuff mainly from the 50s 60s and 70s but there is a s one exceptions now and then at times God bless you Johnny may your voice be in heaven eternally

First time I heard this song was on the MTV premiere and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Actually was listening to the Nine Inch Nails album a few days prior and I wasn't sure what to expect. Johnny Cash, in all the music I heard from the man, this was his most honest, his most telling and most jaw-dropping exit from this world. So when I sing the karaoke version I do the Johnny Cash version instead of the Nine Inch Nails original. Johnny's version had a lot more pain behind it, Reznor's had a lot more addiction.

This song always brings me to tears... I can relate to the song a much... and you can just hear the pain and self resentment in his voice... truly haunting.
this song makes me cry every time i even try to match Cash's tone and voice. it draws so much emotion for being a (great) cover and future labeled production of the nine inch nails song. What a guy. God bless you and your ring of fire!

My best friend took his life 3 years ago, every couple days I like to sing songs like this and just think about how much I miss him. The way the world is today, it's no mystery why suicide is becoming so common. Life is hard, you either become a fighter or become ignorant.

I don't know why, But I love this song. It's my favorite song from Johny Cash, SO much pain, and emotion, not many songs can replicate. I lost my Mother recently, and for some reason something has drawn me to this song. I practice it every day, even trying to sound like Johny Cash as I sing. But when I sing, I put all my emotions into it, and make it as true as I can. I have No Idea if anyone will ever hear me sing it, or If i'll ever need to, but it's something I want to master. I miss my mom, but she's up there with Johny Now.

At 25 i had buried my first son, then about 11 months later his mom. Pain, loss, an addiction made me feel like an an abject failure... that was my history.
I 'found a way' to fulfill the final lyrics of this song. I counted my soul, my 'sweetest friend' deceased and quit living trying to be happy, but doing everything so the guy (me) that woke up tomorrow would have a better history than the guy that woke up this morning..
I consumed God's word not for religion, not for church, but for life.
It was not easy, but this life turned around...

I know this song is sad, but after looking into the lyrics itself and singing it did I felt the sting.
When I think of this, I think of how many people have bullied me and pushed me down, and I remember that I wish they could feel what I feel, and the pain that I have constantly been put through for six years, and I remember that thinking that is useless, and I should just ignore them, but it's hard for me to do that.
Remember for every one who bullied there is 1000 who love you. Focus on who matters in the end that's all that matters anyhow
