Inside Mumbai's BIGGEST Slum Dharavi and the Industries within

  • Inside Mumbai's Mohammad and Mohsin take me on an in-depth tour of Dharavi slums and the micro industries thriving within. Dharavi is the largest slum in Mumbai and the second largest in Asia (after Orangi Town in Pakistan). It is estimated that one million people live in Dharavi, which spans just 535 acres, has a population density of an incredible 869,565 people per square mile. There are approximately 5,000 businesses and 15,000 single-room factories in Dharavi. The slum is the most literate in the country, with a literacy rate of 69%.
The metropolitan area of Mumbai has experienced an explosion in growth over the past 20 years…doubling since 1991.
This growth is attributed to migration from other regions in the country, with migrants seeking business and employment opportunities.
The rapid expansion has led to serious health issues that have to be addressed by the government, and a large percentage of residents live in the city’s slums.
The percentage of people living in slums is estimated to be as high as 41.3% in Greater Mumbai, meaning that over 9 million people live in these areas.
Thank you Mohammad and Mohsin of www.insidemumbaitours.com

A little bit about my channel...
I mainly focus on creating videos about my travel to Cambodia and the Khmer life in the US. My goal is to document different Cambodian communities around the world. When I'm not traveling, I like to make vlogs about my daily life, which include enjoying good food with friends and family. I do have a background in tech so occasionally I'll review the gear that I'm using to make these videos.
    A little about myself...
I came to the US with my father and mother at the age of 1, in the midst of the Khmer Rouge genocide. I lived for almost 40 years without ever returning to Cambodia. It was only recently that I made my first trip back to my homeland and since then, it has been my goal to learn about Cambodia's rich history, religion and document life of Cambodian people living there. In between my trips, I try to visit the different Khmer communities all over the US to see the differences and similarities between them. Please, I do apologize that my Cambodia language skills aren't the greatest, but I am trying to relearn!

This is the best video of Indian slum life I’ve ever watched. I love how the camera shots wind through the lanes, like the viewer is walking in the slum himself. It is nice to see all of the various industries, too. All of those different little industries help keep the population of Mumbai afloat. Great video!

I have a dream to redevelop dharavi and make it the most green and beautiful place on Earth. I think many NRIs have to come out of their shells and take up the real challenge of transforming Indian streets.

That walking bridge that no one uses is a good example of government development imposed on people which does not help them and is not wanted. Dharavi needs to be improved yes with some public infrastructure but with intense community input to support the community not top down planning imposed on people.

The video host is very clear thank goodness cause the guide is almost impossible to understand which is a bit of a waste cause clearly he is knowledgable and wants to share the information but OMG trying to listen to the tour guide is so frustrating...all of a sudden can't understand big chunks of what he is saying.
Curious the damaging effects of people working with the loud and otherwise dangerous conditions. What happens when they get older? They die often, young and/or cared for by others when they cannot work any more?
Does it smell there? The guide only focused on positives and has been featured in another CZcams video. He is sooooo hard to understand. Ok actually they talk later about the ruined river and the stench. Slow down when you talk dude! Such important information and wasted when he speaks so fast and I'm good at understanding accents. He keeps saying it is the residents that oppose safety gear and better development but if they were offered true and good version of either they would take it...they are human beings after all.

John 19:6-7, 11-14 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
