- Cheryl Gates McFadden usually credited as Gates McFadden, is an American actress and choreographer. She is best known for portraying the character of Dr. Beverly Crusher in the Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) television series and subsequent films.
In 1987, McFadden was cast as Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Crusher character was slated to be Captain Jean-Luc Picard's love interest, and this aspect of the character is what attracted McFadden to the role.
Highlights for her character included The High Ground, where Dr. Crusher is kidnapped by terrorists; Remember Me, in which she becomes trapped in an alternate reality where her loved ones start to disappear; The Host, which features a romance between the Doctor and a man with a big secret; 'suspicions, in which Dr. Crusher risking her career to solve the murder of a scientist; 'sub Rosa, where Dr. Crusher becomes the next victim of her grandmother's seductive ghost; and Attached, where Picard and Crusher become telepathically linked as prisoners and learn their true feeling for one another. McFadden reprised her role for all four TNG movies and also provided her voice for PC games Star Trek: A Final Unity and Star Trek Generations. I thought she grew up in Cuyahoga Falls. I went to BW in Berea. She was born 4 days before me. I always enjoyed watching the Star Trek episodes and the old Hoolihan and Big Chuck show.

She tries to be politically neutral but after 12 minutes I couldn't take anymore of the veiled hits. At least her character is timeless.
She was fired in season two of Star Trek TNG. She blamed her firing on sexual discrimination, and stated she was fired because there were 'too many female characters' on the show..? Which really didn't pass the smell test, since she was replaced by another female actor.

I read the same article that I think you've read and you are paraphrasing; she had had a conflict ongoing with the writer/producer that kept putting women in scenes where they had a lot less dialogue and mainly gossiped; whenever they were offered a moment to express genuine intelligent thought it was always in a caregiving role, rather than one that was to do with leadership or action. Marina Sertis also said she shared those feelings and was fully aware that her clothing was designed to amplify sex appeal; she said she used to get phone calls from producers telling her she looked fat and was paid a lot of money to stay in shape. In the pilot of the first ever star trek the first officer was a female and this was later discarded. It was a sexist time and there's a lot more to it than your comment implies. I love star trek with a passion and the more I learn about the sexism behind the scenes, the sadder I get. Gates Mcfadden was fired for making valid points.
Maybe it was because she sucked shit. But whayever pull she had on that show brought her crappy acting back. Oh, she's acaptain of a spaceship. Being a doctor wasn't satisfying her enough for Gates on TNG.
