- Food Forest Part 1: • Turning our ABANDONED ...
Recently we planted our first food forest. A masterful step forwards for our homestead, a thing of dreams soon to be a luscious forest, laden with fruit, berries, and everything our family would need to survive. However, just like everything we try on this mountain, it all started to go spectacularly wrong when the mountain beasts decided to descend up it and create destruction. The jabali dug up all the small trees, broke down terraces, and used our apricots as scratching posts.
Week in week out we’ve been trying new methods to keep them out, then this week, the straw that broke the camels back, the mouflon broke in and nibbled the branches off pretty much every tree in the forest. We have had enough, the mountain beasts are about to get a serious shock, we’re going to build a proper fence, we’re talking galvanised steel posts, tensioned steel, fancy expensive fasteners, concrete, something that could stop an elephant.
We’d love to get this fence sorted before the spring rains to ensure our food forest gets good growth and we can start to feed ourselves from it sooner rather than later.
As a side note, we’ve had an intense month. As many of you know a wildfire destroyed a large part of our valley, and we broke our one and only hard drive during the evacuation, which we’ve been getting fixed in Madrid for the past few weeks. You urgently need a guard dog.
Yes we do! It's all a matter of time... although we are a bit worried about how long it might take to train it! Any ideas on a good dog breed? There is a shepherd on the mountain with sheep and we'd need to make sure it doesn't chase his sheep! We have a friend in the valley who has some big dogs on chains at night but the jabali come right up to the circumference of the chain knowing the dog can't get them, then they go in his kitchen and eat his food! They are very clever animals!
@@ladyandtheowlman Make a maximum/minimum enough 'Perimeter Fence' around your house, garden, livestock - that allows your Guard dogs (2) to stay within the perimeter to chase away intruders. Also hang cow bells intermittently along on the fence (wire) that will make a noise whenever there is something trying to breach the fence. The noise will alert the dogs to their presence. But the fence should be strong enough to prevent the dogs from running off after them and getting lost. If you have power along the fence line, you can also put motion detectors with lights that will help see you at night in an emergency.
Some great advice here thank you. The perimeter fence makes sense... although a scary amount of work with all the terraces and i'm sure dogs are pretty good at getting out of a fence! Cow bells is a cool idea, and also motion sensing lights could work as well. All great ideas thank you for writing them down for us!

I have a farming background down here in AU , you need to have an electric wire outrigger on the outside of your heavy steal fence , it sits about 1ft outside the steel fence about 3foot of the ground level. The outrigger needs to run at about 25-50k volts to penitrate thick fur and hair. The inside acts as the earth and the outrigger acts as the positive. When the beasts try to push thrugh they complete the circuit. In you dry stony soil you cant use the ground as an earth as there is not enough water to conduct the electricity. Look up Australian farming fences as we have similar pests and conditions as you. The combination of a good sturdy fence and eleticity will keep the beasts out
Wow thank you Ray, that's some really good advice. We always struggled with our electric fence here (7000volt chicken fence), the grounding never seemed to work, so this solution of grounding off the fence itself is really clever, glad someone finally told us the problem with ours! 25-50k volts is also a huge voltage! haha we definitely need a stronger system. The sheep always got through our electric fencing at 7000 volts and we never knew why! Really appreciate the advice and support Ray!

Great to watch your family grow and your adventures with the property. One thing, winds don't usually go west. What you are seeing is probably polution (vehicle exhaust) from the city.
Thank you Eric glad to have you on the journey with us! ❤️ Yeah could be pollution, never thought of that. Although sometimes we get news alerts about Saharan dust, and it covers our car windscreen, and all the leaves in the garden! It seems crazy that it would make it all this way!
From all homesteaders' stories, it seems to me that the most important thing to start with, even before the house, is good, strong fences around the animals, the gardens and the baby trees..... to avoid a lot of frustration, losses and waste of time and money....
Thanks so much for all your comments we really appreciate the support! Yes you are right, we could have saved ourselves a lot of problems by making a good fence in the beginning! I guess in the beginning though we didn't have the experience or knowledge about which types of fences would work, we made a lot of very bad fences that didn't work haha! You also need to live for a while on your land to know where is best to put a fence, because we have 14 acres and would take us a lifetime to fence the entire land, so we need to be more strategic where fences go, and in the early days you're still not sure where you want things like food forests and vegetables and other trees. ❤️

To prevent a knot in your string, all you need is a small 6in wide board with at both sides of the board leave both the outside edges a couple of inches longer so the outside edges serve as a holder of the string.

Glad to see that you are still working hard, 😓 , great to see the beautiful 😍 mountain ⛰️ peaks, again, sage is in joying himself, not being offensive. 😂, but I Think the baby hoagies are going to get through the fence, might be worth putting a overlap on the fencing or some smaller grade fencing along the bottom, when you are doing your welding on the metal, I couldn’t quite tell whether the metal was galvanised or not, this is extremely toxic, When you are burning it when welding, well worth the effort you have put in, it does look amazing, 🤩, The vegetables looked very good that you had grown, hopefully some more veg later in the year, So long as the hoagies and sheep goats don’t get them, Sorry to see and hear that you had to evacuate your property, because of wildfires, It’s that time of year again, isn’t it?,

@@ladyandtheowlman there is one more reason to stop the baby hoagies them from getting through the fence, mum and dad will run a riot. They will rip the fence apart to get to their babies., Do not want to be on the receiving end of Wildboar when they’re angry, very very dangerous, you’ll be better off getting yourself a permit and Some type of weapon, you could make yourself a very strong crossbow,

Robbie, when you tension the fence, try using your ratchet instead of the pliers.
Thanks Alan I'll give this a go! No sure why we didn't try this... I think I was a bit worried about tensioning too much and bending the posts... but in hindsight it would have saved a lot of time and effort. Also I scraped off some of the galvanising using the pliers because they kept slipping so will probably get rust on those now which isn't ideal!

have you thought of harvesting a young wild sheep deer as they will give you so much good food compared to all the work the vegetables require?
It's a wonderful idea! We're definitely keen to try, although we have no experience in hunting or preparing meat! Do you have experience in this? We have an agreement that if Robbie manages to hunt one with his bow then I will prepare the meat for freezing/ eating! We love the idea of organic meat from the mountain!
@@ladyandtheowlman I did it as a boy with my father. Is a relatively easy proess, especialy for sheep as once you cut the skin in certain positions, super easy to pull off. The gut them, care ful not to cut open the small spleen as it will taint the flavour of what it goes on, then cut into pieces, I suggest watching a couple of chanels I watch from the States, who show some of tho, Sow the Land & Justin Rhodes. Wow that's some amazing advice thank you! Cool that you were taught by your father, seems like we should be teaching Sage this as well. I think if we can just keep our minds focused on the end goal of Rosemary and roast lamp we could just about do it! We need to become a bit more hardy. Feels like our grandparents could do this kind of thing easily, and then our generation lost the killer instinct. We'll check those channels out thanks for the recommendations!

Remove the galvanising before welding- it pollutes the weld which is why they look so bad
Thanks for the advice David! Really appreciate it! Robbie said he'll try this next time! He's been welding for 3 years with that welder! We welded me a post the other day out of 2 bits of 20mm rebar, but when I hammered it into the ground with a sledge hammer the other bit of rebar fell right off haha.

@@ladyandtheowlman I so much want you to succeed--to make a happy life, to stay together. I built a house with my first wife, on an island, no electricity, in the far north. I'm going there soon, and the grandchildren will be there too for the summer. Maintaining it against the depredations of time and weather is all I'm able for. But it's been a blessing.

That area really doesn’t look like a fruit growing area
Thanks for your comment SirHackaLot! We are 760m above sea level so the local farmers say you can't grow oranges or avocados because it's too cold, but we're going to try anyway! Maybe we'll put some fleece over the trees when there is a frost each year. Plums, pomegranates, peaches, lemons all grow well at our height though which is good!

Haha thanks James, it does seem like we could solve all our problems if one of us could just find a passion for hunting! Do you have experience hunting? Wouldn't we have to get up every night and sit in a tree trying to keep the animals at bay?

Some of the timelapses were really cool, sometimes the light and clouds are so perfect! The mosquitos are just beginning to start, then they will disappear around October. We'd love to get a dog, it's just a bit daunting to think about all the training it would need.. it needs to be able to keep the mouflon, sheep, goats and jabali away but not scare the shepherds sheep too much because the shepherd won't be very happy, sometimes his sheep get injured by walkers dogs so you have to be careful. Any suggestions on dog breed that would be good?
@@ladyandtheowlman Naturally, I would opt for a German shepherd. They protect their herd (including yourselves 🙂) and bark to alert you and to scare unwanted visitors away. They can stay outside, even during the night, where you live and they are lovely with kids. Keep in mind, they love to jump into water, especially when it is hot. You are spot on; they do need training (especially during the first six months). Did you discuss the possibility with your neighbour/shepherd?
That's some great advice thanks so much! When we finally buy a dog we'll ask you some more questions because it sounds like you have some good experience! The shepherd has lots of dogs, all of the same breed, for some reason we never asked what breed they are, but he says it's the only dog that works with his sheep!

Haha yes fortunately these ones we found by the fuente one day! We are a little more careful when he is holding my nice sunglasses!
Guys, a much more efficient investment is a rifle with a scope (night scope is even better)
because it is
- cheaper then a fence
- much less time and labour consuming in use
- it brings in free food ( you need a freezer and unlearn vegetarianism though)
- it scare and teaches wild life not to come back

Questions: 1) Would we need to stay up all night trying to shoot a wild boar? (Sounds like quite a lot of work!?) 2) How long until they come back after shooting one? 3) We have 60,000m2 of land, would we need to shoot in different areas of the land or just focus on wild boar near the house?

Did you guys have prior construction experience before taking all of this on or are you learning as you go?
Thanks for your comment Anka! We didn't have any experience no. We mainly went on youtube and found videos of spanish people building, so we could see how they used the materials (very different to england!), and then we went to the 2 big builders merchants to find the same materials and also ask the kind people there many many questions about how they recommend using the materials! Then we asked 3 builders to come and give us some advice on our projects, then we just started working and once you know the basics it seems like you can pretty much make anything! We are still learning everyday of course and get a lot of things wrong haha! ❤️
You definitely need a cover for a chickens to protect them from a bird attacks. If not they will never be able to live.
Yes luckily we came to our senses after the hawk attack so we made a tunnel for them to live in. It was a lot of work making it though, and we wish we could give them more space to roam around outside, but as soon as they go outside the hawks and eagles start moving in!
@@ladyandtheowlman sorry, im a newbie to your channel, so excuse my lack of knowledge. I’m not sure a tunnel would make much of a difference since a hawk can go into it too. They need cover from above. We raised chickens we went through the same learning curve. If you have a fence, netting can be bought to go over the top. Not sure if you have Amazon out your way or not.
better don`t put concrete to the ground level for avoid pushing up poles by ice (leave 5-10cm soild over concrete). And don`t forget that you can use tractor for pull fence
Wow thanks that's great advice! We weren't sure if ice was a problem for concrete in spain, it does freeze about 3 times per year to around -3/-4 degrees. I could imagine if we get a big frost that the posts might move yes...and then maybe our gate wouldn't close anymore! Really appreciate the advice!

@@ladyandtheowlman If I may suggest a few things:
Get at least two siblings from the same litter. Then you can always have one dog free to roam at night and the free dog won't go too far.
The second is not to make them your house friends, keep them outside and feed them the last meal of the day some raw meat.
The breed you choose is important. Border Collies are beautiful but like to visit the neighbours. Some mixed race of perro de agua, crossed with something with short hair.
Get them young, borrow a bigger dog in the meantime, and take them on walks all hours of the night.
Some basic training is imperative.

Wow that's some great advice thank you Martin! Seems like you have a solid strategy there. A little daunting we've got to admit... it's a lot of work when we've already got our hands full with Sage! But seems like it's definitely worth the effort in the end. When we do finally get a dog (or two like you say), we'll come and ask you some more questions if that's ok!

bury the fence in the ground about 12 inch because the critters will trying to dig under it, Also line outside with big rock, I would also add 2 strains 12 inch apart electric around it with more voltage,, once they smell that sweet fruit they'll kill them self's to get to it,,,,, good luck

You're right about burying the fence, it''s just that where we live the ground is so hard, and there are many big stones so digging a trench would take us a very very long time! Although checkout part 2 of the fence video (coming soon) to see Robbie try and fashion something to stop the beasts coming underneath, you can let us know if you think it will work! Electric fence strands is a great idea, maybe if we do get some break-ins this can be our next defensive step! Although stopping the weeds growing around an electric fence can take a lot of work!

Yes you need a working dog, that lives outside. Inside your fence. That will fix the problem otherwise the animals will figure a way in. Feral pigs are incredibly tough and will eventually get in.
Thanks for the advice! Having a dog inside the fence would definitely give us that next level of security. We need a bigger perimeter fence really... around the house and trees/ vegetables closer to the house, then a dog could protect everything... right now we only have this small fence around the vegetables and food forest, but we have 14 acres of land being eaten by sheep, goats, boar everyday so can't plant anything here! In the long run we'll give the dog a go for sure. Thanks so much for the comment and support for our channel! ❤️
you should remove that board and and pour cement over that pipe so it dont move when you drive over it. did you feel it move when you went over it it is gonna break from that.

Haha thanks Peter! We certainly do eat meat! We currently spend a lot of our monthly budget on buying organic meat from Madrid, so we're keen to find alternative ways of getting organic meat. The idea of hunting some jabali sounds great, it's probably healthier than the stuff we are buying as well! Do you have any tips on hunting or preparing jabali meat? We'd have to get a license from the town hall to do it, but I think the main hurdle is whether we've got it in us to actually do it haha. We have an agreement that if robbie manages to catch one with his bow, then I will prepare the meat!
@@ladyandtheowlman Hi, Sorry, I am not a hunter or butcher so have no ideas about how to catch or process the meat of a jabali. Also, similar to your self, I do not know if I would have the internal fortitude to take the life of a creature.
Check with the locals about if it is a good idea to hunt them, or how to process them.

@@ladyandtheowlman Another thought, as you are living in an old shepherds house, are there wild sheep you could harvest?
The wild sheep here are called Mouflon, with big horns, a bit like ibex, they eat all our trees from the top down! Then there are also 400 sheep that the local shepherd looks after, but we can't hunt these ones. People say Mouflon aren't that tasty, but I'm sure they'll taste just fine!

Thanks for the comment! We had some savings before we came, which allowed us to buy to house and develop 1 small room upstairs to live in, which we're actually very happy living in. I work 3 jobs in the nearby village, there is actually a lot of work to be had in the villages, cleaning mainly, or teaching english, if you are reliable and turn up on time you can find yourself with a lot of jobs! The jobs are 2-3 hours here and there which suits me great because I can come back to spend time with Sage, it's much better than working full 9-5 days in other work! Beyond this, obviously so much work is now online, Robbie has lots of opportunities to work online doing engineering work, however he spends most of his time helping to get our youtube videos out (which brings us some money now too thankfully) and building the house. Hope this helps! ❤️

Thanks for the comment Laura! If we get a donkey would that keep the animals away? A herdprotection dog sounds good, do you know of a breed that is good in the heat of spain? Do you just let them roam around free over your land or keep them tied up somewhere?
A 12 bore or a 45 rifle would do the trick and put them in the freezer and then you can eat them instead.. I have galvanised pig wire up which keeps the wild boar at bay. So it's raining at last then. Just go in the rocks somewhere and stop worrying, we all have to go. When you get your bog finished, what ever you do don't put any chemicals of any kind down it or you'll stop it working then you'll have a stink on your hands. ? Why choose Spain as had a lot of bad comments from people who went to Spain and bad experiences and went home, most concerning bad nieghbours over boundries and government taking land and not compensating for it Looking at you 2 I would say N. Zealand would have been a good choice as plenty land out there where you can do what you are doing there and you are well inside the age restriction of 56.
Thanks for the advice Robert! We really appreciate all the wisdom! One day we'll be masterful hunters and we'll be able to live from the organic healthy animals around us, but right now we have no experience in hunting and are a little worried it might turn us vegans for life if we try it! I guess we chose Spain because it wasn't too far from england, so we could fly back and visit family somewhat easily! You definitely have to be a little lenient when you buy land in spain, but the locals are nice people as long as you get to know them and show you have a passion for farming and not just a tourist - they are all passionate farmers here!
