- On this day in 1980, John Lennon was murdered outside his home in New York City.
Ever since, Beatles fans have speculated about what might have transpired with the band had he lived.
A rediscovered 1975 interview with Lennon from the BBC archive gives some clues.
His untimely death would rob the Beatles of that opportunity in person, but it wasn't the end of their musical collaboration together.
The final song, Now and Then, was released this year, credited to all four Beatles.

Just as he was coming back to us musically he was taken from us. Life is weird.
Paul McCartney's latest single "Coming Up" was one of the main reasons to inspired John Lennon to return to recording in 1980. John and Yoko were also planning for a tour for the next year after "Double Fantasy" album had released. Besides it would have been very likely that McCartney and Lennon might have worked together again in some form like Live Aid or MTV Unplugged.

Played all kinds of John Lennon last night. His voice commanded our stereo all evening. A great listen of a music legend taken too soon.

This is one of the best interview clips of John I've seen; he's seems so comfortable, genuine, clear-headed, insightful, and not giving a performance. @BBCNews is it possible to see the rest of it? He makes so much sense here--I never thought of a "Beatles reunion" in terms of going back to the studio, but of course that's how they'd do it! Their standards are too high and they're too committed to innovation for a reunion to be anything less than a renovation.
What a shame we didn't get to see (hear) Lennon and McCartney re-engaging in the studio as men who've passed through various stages in life. That's what I get from John here, an awareness that the separation from Paul can't last forever and that as long as they continue to converse and be "close" as he puts it, the time will probably come when they're both ready to continue the conversation in their first language of songwriting and recording. I can see them as having recorded something every 10 years or so, if he'd lived. The were/are both so smart and caring, how cool would it be to hear John responding to the octogenarian Paul reflecting on their inability to say "I love you" as young men, etc.

I was taken aback when John said being on his own is somewhat more difficult (paraphrasing) he mentions being "sniped". I'll never forget the tv bulletin that horrible evening, sitting in my living room, when he was 'sniped' and died. Never stop "Imagine".
Remembering the great man on this tragic day. ❤️ Wherever he is in the after life, I hope he has some peace in the fact that he made so many people in this world happy.

To the totally sadly all too common false comments calling John a wife beater who ditched his kid and another saying he wasn't a very nice person, John Lennon said in his very last radio interview (just hours before he was so cruelly, insanely shot and killed by a crazy,horrible piece of sh*t who used to be a big Beatles fan since he was 11, and John was his favorite Beatle and he said years later that he met and shook John's then 5 year old Sean just two days before he irrationally shot and killed his father right in front of Yoko,that Sean was the cutest little boy he ever saw,and that it never occurred to him that he would never see his father again and and John was nice enough to take the time to autograph his album just hours before he killed him) that like most young men he was more involved with his career than with his children,and he said he regretted not spending enough time with Julian.
He also said that he and Julian would have a relationship in the future but sadly they both were deprived of this. And John didn't do the same horrible thing to Julian that his father did to him. John's father literally totally abandoned him and literally didn't see, or talk to John from the time he was 5,until he was a successful famous 24 year old.
John did see Julian sometimes, and spoke with him on the phone and sent him post cards,birthday and Christmas cards and presents and he bought Julian a guitar when he was 11 as a Christmas present. John's father never did any of these things and John said it was like his father was dead.
And Cynthia Lennon said that John only hit her twice *before* they were married when he was a very young psychologically messed up 19 year old guy, and Cynthia always said that she would always be in love with John and she was married 3 times after him. Cinthia also said in a 1984 TV interview that is on youtube,that John was a kind sensitive man and the cruel one the media often portrays him as Yoko and his girlfriend May Pang said the same things.
It's a great example of cancel culture, social media spreading false rumors about someone until everyone believes it's true. Cynthia said he hit her once, when they were teenagers and she was dancing with another boy. John was certainly not proud of that and admitted he was out of control as a teenager and would get into fights with anyone. But that's now been twisted to say he was a domestic abuser.
Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with your comment, I'm not all black and white when it comes to him.
As a massive John Lennon fan, I think this guy wasn't a saint nor a demon. I think he was just himself. He did bad things like hitting Cynthia, cheating on her, treating his friends like garbage sometimes and many more. But I also think he was smart, down-to-earth and an avid believer of peace.
So whilst I think some of his actions were not very forgivable, I still love John for who he was both as a musician and a person, and I definitely don't listen to those who have said he beat his wife and kids.
And i also like to remember that Paul, Ringo and George themselves all loved and admired John too. :)
It really makes me mad that people will say horrible things. John was young once and made youthful mistakes like the rest of us. But John also had a caring side that has been ignored. But we loved him. I just wish that fans and paparazzi be more respectful towards our celebrities, they are making a living like the rest of us. John and, later, Princess Diana, paid the ultimate price of fame, and I was shocked and upset by their deaths.

If it had that written, wouldn’t we’ve been told in 1995 already..? Also, reading all John’s interviews in 1980, the Playboy etc, it just don’t make sense or add up. Thirdly, why would he write ”for paul” when the song clearly is about Yoko or a mistress?
@@katethomas5712 "For Paul" was written on the cassette that Yoko prepared for Paul, not on any of the tapes that John originally recorded on. This has been confirmed by Sean Lennon and it's never been an official story.
Them songs are just a little taste of what music the world has been robbed from they were most likely for a solo album of his paul and george knew how to finish them and stuck a beatles label on them

On the morning after the shooting I was riding a bus to work, and a man across from me was reading a Sun paper with the (then) typical page one juxtapostion of the day's headline (in this case of John Lennon's murder) and a suggestive photo of some attractive young woman in a bikini. In disbelief I asked him, 'is that real?' After all this time I can still clearly replay that whole scene in my mind.

As a young man born in 1991, i grew up the love the Beatles.

Cynthia wrote in her book it was one time, when they were teenagers and he caught her dancing with another boy. He admitted to being violent but he was talking about as a teenager, picking fights with people in Liverpool.
