How Brighton Marathon Went /// A Tale Of Two Halves

  • My official time was 4:22, which put me within 8 minutes of my goal time. To say I'm happy is an understatement.
When I'm old, I doubt very much I'll remember the splits or the pacing strategy, probably just the euphoria of finishing a marathon. That's good enough for me on my first marathon!

Love your overall reflection of it all Andy. You did great for a first marathon especially with the lack of long runs. I've run quite a few marathons now and this one was the closest to getting my fuelling and hydration right, which is why I think that I didn't hit the wall. Looking forward to hearing what you'll decide for your second marathon.

@@HereWeAreRunning Chris, this would be an expensive suggestion, but have you considered applying to run the 2023 New York City Marathon? It's the world's largest marathon, and you have probably heard from your running friends about the fabulous turnout of cheering spectators all along the course. It is difficult to get in, unless you go to the expense of applying through an approved International Tour Operator which they will list on their website each year. I hope you can do this one, and if you come to New York City, let us American fans meet you.

Sorry Andy, but you got it all backwards there mate! If you go out too fast (in your case below the 4h finish time), you primarily use carbohydrate/glycogen to fuel your energy needs, whereas by slowing down, the balance is tipped more towards fat-burning which will prolong your availability of glycogen i your muscles;) I know it's a learning curve, I've been there myself! My advice would be to read a book like "Advanced Marathoning" by Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas. Don't let the title put you off. There is solid information in that book! Cheers;)

I completely agree with you about not liking to run with a hydration vest. I rely only on race course water stations, and on training runs, rely on water fountains in public parks or a trail campground. A heavy hydration vest just ruins the free feeling of running.

Need to start taking gels every 30 mins from the start! The night before and morning off have a dash of diluted orange/ mi waidi in your water! Extra sugar and salt will be of benefit! I wouldn’t worry about running without the hydration vest. I trained without water then just took water on through the course at Manchester. Potentially may need to look at how often you are taking gels as you said for future, I took one every 4 miles however I know some take every 5k so it’s trial and error.
