  • Gene Krupa's 1954 Slingerland Radio King drum set was recently discovered and rescued from sitting in a wet basement for the last few decades via an online auction that caught the drum world by storm. I am joined today by the winner of this iconic set, Steve, and GK authentication expert, Brooks Tegler, to hear the full story of this legendary kit. This drum set was featured on the cover of the Drummin' Men book, the Krupa and Rich album, it was used in The Benny Goodman Story Film, and was used by Gene extensively around the world for 3 years!
    This drum set is as iconic as it gets and is possibly the last full Gene Krupa drum set to be found. Enjoy this incredible piece of history and thanks to Brooks and Steve for sharing this story with me!
    Here are Brooks' other episodes and CZcams videos that he has done with me:

    Gene was a family friend for many years and I got to meet him in 1973 shortly before his death, when he came to CT. He was overjoyed to see my mother, aunt and uncle, whom he had known for decades. He was very nice to me, and as a 17 year old rock drummer, he told me that I should do what he always wanted to do....be a percussionist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra !!! That his drums passed through Charlie Donnelly's vintage drum store in is no surprise to me...he knew Gene and would talk to me about him and my uncle, who also was a drummer and who was close with Gene. I lived only 2 miles from that drum shop and still own a beautiful Leedy, ( Slingerland) wood finish kit I bought from Charlie in 1970 ! One of my most prized possessions is a sepia Krupa publicity photo that he signed and gave to my mother at her 16th birthday party in the late 1930s. It was penned in silver ink and included a gracious personal note to her. I am glad that these drums have been saved and serve to bring back the memory of the great Gene Krupa !

      Perhaps this kit that was found was gifted to your uncle by Gene then hensold it. Or Gene sold it/raffled it off through the drum shop.

      I work with Gene from 1965 to 1968 it was basically a whole review, Gene did his two songs including Sing Sing Sing . The rest of the band did dance music , nothing really hard rock , but Mercy , Mercy ,, Mercy , that was a small singer male, and a female and like I said, we also did some standards, during this time, Gene would always be either introducing, some of the players, or just disappearing. It’s funny last year, and Gene died in 1973. So the interview I recently heard was somewhere between 1968 and 1972, Gene was talking about a lot of different things, the old he also started talking about the time when I was working with him, he didn’t mention anybody by name, but he said we were working at the Métropole café, and at the Metropole café it was on the ground floor, but we also played on the second floor, it was more of a show room, not a bar, the space on the ground floor was a bar with tables and had opened front door and windows, that people actually stood out in the sidewalk and could watch a whole show. You couldn’t see very clearly, but if the doors were open on the summer night the sidewalk was always pack with people . Besides a Metropole café we did some traveling to Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia . Gene was sick with leukemia, so his drumming was limited , but he never showed it, and he always gave his drum solo 100% of his energy. When the band was together work, and Gene was always respectful to us, but during his interview, he said when we played the Metropole café, like I said, it had a ground floor a second floor, and another long staircase that went to the dressing rooms, Gene said that he almost got a heart attack, running away , up all those steps to get away from the music we were playing, he said he had a run up two big flights of stairs to get to the dressing rooms , to get away from us, I never knew he disliked the music so much . Some of the guys in the band was season jazz guys. It was like a 16 piece review, and the four horn players, all jazz guys, singers , dances and like I said, it was nowhere near hard rock. It was songs like Mercy Mercy, Mercy, . I’m your Puppet , . Knock on Wood , .One o’clock jump., . Take five , Classical Gas . Krupa did not like rock music at all, the slightest bit of pop influence, and he was turned off. If it wasn’t classical, music, or jazz, he was very opinionated, I really found that out through that interview, although I know, he always loves classical and jazz, I didn’t realize how much is a disliked pop music .. So I found all this out like 50 years after I worked with him

      @@franksaladino3938 thanks for your reflections, Frank, that is really valuable information there. But really, can you blame the guy? If you know about his history, going back to Chicago, he was really a pure Chicago jazz man from his earliest days. He could not understand the hard simple style of rock and funk, etc. Buddy, rich maid, attempts to be “current“ and play “rock“ but in the end it always sounded like old great swinging Buddy anyway. But you have to respect jeans traditional tastes. I’ve always kept an open mind to new styles of music, but I literally can’t stand really loud, heavy electronic club music, “electronica”… It’s painful for me, some of it is really shit. Just my opinion, but I’m 60 so there you go.

      speaking of ICONIC legendary drums check THIS OUT! if any of you guys are buddy fans (i'm one of his biggest fans spoke w him hung out w him smoked pot w him etc etc but was never a ("close friend per se anyhow if you really read the traps book you'll find that he was first discovered by a drummer in vaudeville and that it was the stratford theater in stamford ct. ( sadly torched on purpose by a moron around 15 years or less ago very sad) but the book never named this "unk. drummer..well, i found out exactly who that drummer was! its a loong story but heres it is thumbnail i was hanging around w this older drummer a husband of a woman my mother played cards w once a month his name was ernie beyers..ernie told me his father was a house drummer in vaudeville at the stratford theater..well guess what? (and i HAD this info LONG before that book was even printed in fact buddy was still alive at this point) i asked well what was your fathers name he said "fritzy beyers) and he added that traps once played on his kit! i said no shit? he said nope NO shit! i asked him if i could see them he said sure..well luckily he lived in orange ct on the border of west haven ct on melloy rd. so i drove over just to see this kit i was in AWE it was set up in the mans basement minty as could be tacked bottom heads and it was i BELIEVE a wfl kit.. white marine 100% complete! i BEGGED this guy to please will me those drums so that i could donate the kit to a museum bc i to this day think that kit is even MORE important than ANY kit buddy used..it was THEE SET he was discovered on (you all now the story buddy told it many times i started as a little child and i sat on a drummers lap and this drummer noticed i was keeping time not just hap hazzardly hitting junk) of course ive shortened ND Paraphrased this quote) but you get the point anyhow i never got the drums bc his brother bobby was still alive and he PROB and i do mean i SURE DO HOPE bobby got them and hopefully his wife didnt just fling the dMNED THINGS off in the paper or some crap its been a very long time since ive seen bobby but doubt he could still be alive bc he was older in 1985 when i was told this story i only half bought bc why WOULD i buy a story like thAT BUT after reading the traps book and whenever tehy mentioned the stratford theater i KNEW at that point the story i had been true and completely truthful..sadly bobby didnt will them to me either so yeah the last and only time i sAW THAT SET was easily nearing 40 years ago now..ugh anyhows thats the story and i'm sure its correct and true now the book that came out 9 years or so later absolutely proved it to me..a and even though ernie allowed me to play it i dared not.. sadly i didnt even get a pic w them bc ernie had passed rather rapidly and i thought i had more time to revisit him and those drums..sad

    I do enjoyed this episode. I’m a long time Gene Krupa fan. I’m 82 years old and grew-up in the 40’s and 50’s. My mother was a big movie buff and used to drag me to the movies. So I first became aware of Krupa through the movies he appeared in. Later in life as a teenager my mother encouraged me to become a drummer and for my 18th birthday (1959) took me into down town Chicago (the loop) bought me a set of drums. It was a small old music shop. My mom told the proprietor that we wanted to look at a set like Gene Krupa played. The guy explained Krupa played Slingerland drums and he didn’t have that brand in stock but he had a set of Rogers which is what Buddy Rich played and were built better and more rugged than Slingerland. It was a beautiful set of drums. They were Marine Pearl, with Chrom Rims. The set included a snare, bass, a base Tom, a floor Tom, a high hat and 20” Zildjian cymbal. My mom paid $585.00, which for us (in 1959) was a huge amount of money. I played with them for a few years but unfortunately I never studied and finally decided to go into acting. But this episode brought back a lot of fun memories. I am still a huge Gene Krupa fan. Thanks for this episode!

    This is extraordinary. One of my little fantasies in life has been to get my hands on/own a piece of equipment owned and played by Mr Gene Krupa. I actually had a chance to purchase a 1950s or 60s A. Zildjian cymbal stamped GK (probably his) but I disliked the sound of the 16” cymbal and let it go, even though it was for sale for $200 in 2010 or so. Now I really regret letting that go… But maybe one day another piece of Gene’s gear will pass my way.

    this is interesting because my late friend Andy Florio who was a friend of Gene said almost all of his drums burned in a fire at Gene's house and that Gene was already sick with leukemia and he lived in the habitable area of his house till he passed so how this guy got this kit who knows. Andy was contacted by Slingerland when Mel Torme was looking for an original Krupa kit and they bought original radio king lugs from Andy and made a kit for Torme (in my opinion a real creep... I know he's dead) and Torme claimed that the kit was from the Carnegie Hall show which was insane which is why I asked Andy about it and he fessed up.

    In 1961, my uncle brought me to his night club in Trenton, NJ to see a drummer. I had just begun playing in a drum and bugle corp and wanted to learn how to play on a kit. Upon arriving at the night club, I entered a private dining room used by the entertainers and waited for my uncle. A few minutes later my uncle returned with the drummer and introduced him to me. He said, "Ricky this is Gene Krupa". I was eleven years old and had no clue who he was. However, I knew he was famous and when he spoke with my uncle during dinner, I listened to every word he spoke. He shared his challenges which he had overcome. I was shocked at his honesty and that left a permanent impression. He seemed like a great person. After dinner, he performed and I was seated about 10 feet in front of him. It was the most amazing performance I had ever seen and I can still remember the way he worked the small cymbals to produce a variety of sounds. After his performance, he autographed his photo which I still have. The drum set he played that night and the one in his autographed picture that I have, looks identical to the one purchased by Steve. Brooks, I will listen to your podcasts and buy your book. I worked with Gene Krupa from 1965 to 1968 I played on Gene's set every night . One thing that seems wrong , the man said calf skin heads . Gene's drums had beat up clear plastic heads , you could actually see deep stick dents in the floor tom tom head . I was shocked how bad and old Gene's drums were , his roadie Crip was a super nice man , but Crip told me , Gene was too cheap to let him buy newer drums .Gene was very frugal , we were doing a gig in Chicago , during Gene's solo a stick went flying into the crowd , some man caught the stick and wanted to keep it for a souvenir , but after the song was over Gene went to the edge of the stage and asked the man for the stick back , the man pretended to give the stick back , but when Gene reached for it , but the man pulled it back teasing him , Gene was literally begging for a $0.50 stick. I am not positive this is Gene's set , but I think I saw the plaque on the snare . His snare drum had a gold plaque saying Slingerland Gene Krupa . I don't believe from the pictures this guys drums were Gene Krupa's Crip his roadie told me in 1965 , be had the same set from almost 20 years. So that set was new around 1945 / 1946 according to Gene's roadie . I saw this exact set I played on when Gene did a TV show in 1969.I could see the plague on the snare and I saw the dents on the floor tom Gene set was not brand new in 1954 because I know for a fact it was falling apart in 1965 Something is wrong the floor toms looks wrong , he used only one floor toms in 1965.
    Gene had the same roadie he name was Crip for over 20 years until Gene's death in 1973 . Actually Gene was the first drummer to work with Slingerland to manufacturer the first tunable tom tom before the heads were more like bongo heads. Gene also work on the first Hi Hat stands , before they called a low boy the clapping cymbals sat by the bass drum pedal . So Gene did a lot for drummers You are 100% right we did gigs with Buddy Rich band , Buddy was amazing , but he lost the audience his drums in 1966 sounded like firecrackers , he was amazing his drumming was so much more technical and much faster then Gene , Buddy got a polite applaud after a blazing 15 minute solo , Gene came on stage played a musical four bar break, the crowd was on it feet screaming go Gene Go . Gene's drums although like I said were old and falling apart , but sounded mic'ed up like cannons I hate the cliche less is more , but in Gene 's case less was better more musical . Buddy change is sound in 1969 , he developed a much better approach to his musical choices , but Gene was always the top guy .

      Enjoyed reading your reply Frank. I agree with the Krupa vs Buddy thing but music is and has never been a competition or who's best. Buddy can sound like cutlery in a washing machine on fast spin at times to me ... Gene's playing reminds me of a huge sailing ship on a rolling ocean. I have a Slingerland BR 80N set - 3ply but my go to kit is my 1930's/40's Radio King set. Also what you say about Gene and the plastic head's makes sense too. I have to say looking at the finger print etc. if it's not legit it fooled me too. Absolutely stonking video though ! I hope the first thing you play on those is 'Sing Sing Sing' Steve.

      Hey Frank - thanks for the great comment and I appreciate you listening to the episode. I love the Gene stories!
      Steve sent me a message with a response (he wants to remain anonymous). Before I paste his response - I will say that in response to your comment about calf skin heads vs. clear plastic heads, this drum set was used from 1954-1957 and mylar heads are widely accepted to have come to market in 1957 so it would have been calfskin before that.
      Here is Steve's response: "Hi Frank, thanks for the comments. As was stated in the podcast, my set was acquired by Gene in the middle of 1954. Possibly right before he flew to Australia for a summer tour. This kit was used exclusively, other than a few appearances with a rental kit, until early 1957 at which time there are a few pictures of the bass drum being used with new toms that had the then new, small soundking lugs. After that point, there are not any pictures of this kit being used by Gene that I have seen. Brooks may have a few.
      Gene did acquire a brand-new kit in 1957 with the aforementioned small lugs on the toms and the then new die cast floor tom mounts, cymbal mounts and telescoping spurs. This new kit had an identical head with the same GK shield and Slingerland logo and was used at least until 1960 where it can be seen on several TV shows from that period including the Ed Sullivan show. This could have been a new head or it is possible that the front head from my kit was used on that kit and returned to mine at some point. There was a new head that showed up in '61 with the same Slingerland arch but the lettering on the GK was slightly different. This can be seen on an appearance on the Tonight show in '62.
      You state that you worked with him from '65 -'68. My kit had long since be retired, so the set you are describing is at least a couple of sets after mine.
      As to the plastic heads. Evans Products Inc, was started on December 1, 1958 to produced their plastic heads. Remo was formed June 1, 1957 to produce their plastic drum heads. Ludwig and Slinglerland followed suite. So at the time that this drum kit was in use by Gene, plastic heads weren't commercially available yet. From TV shows from the late 50s of the kit after mine, he was still using calf heads at least until the end of the 50s. The 1960 Ed Sullivan appearance appears to still be Calf heads. Plastic heads really took off in the early 60s. I would love to see pictures of that clear head on his floor tom because I have never seen him use anything but calf or white coated plastic heads. Gene was known for being very frugal so the drum stick story is very interesting.
      As we said in the podcast, the whereabouts of this kit after it's retirement sometime in '57 to '58 until the previous owner are not known. "

      Well, I hope you’re right, I can’t swear to it I only remember, thinking, how broken down the drums were , and his roadie Crip told me he’s been using that drum set for 20 years, in 1965 maybe 1966 , I change my snare head , after maybe every 15 gigs, at least a two Tom heads, the snare drum head, maybe not the bass drum head, but I changed out my snare, drum head, back in those days to has wind anywhere near as strong and good if they are now, by Gene seem like they never change the heads , like I remember the floor, Tom head, you could actually see the dents from the tip of the stick . I never used Gene’s snare drum. When Gene went on , I went off, and they took off my snare drum, and put Gene ‘s snare drum up . I also remember his snare drum clearly, it was in better shape. I remember it had a plaque on it probably 2 1/2“ x 2 1/2“ Slingerland drum company, Gene Krupa it was a gold plaque, it was kind of tarnished. We didn’t do much traveling, although we played Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and maybe that was just another kit that he had that he use for those bounce around gigs, because like you said two, when I saw them on TV that has locked your white like they were new heads, and, like I said, he never changed drum heads , so I was kind of thinking that those drums he used on TV were rentals, so I don’t have facts I don’t really know . I just know for almost 3 years I work with them with the same drums, and to be honest, I was shocked how poorly he kept his equipment, and, like I told you how fool he was with sticks, and I guess he didn’t know it at the time, but all the drum manufacturers, especially Slingerland, he could get free sticks anywhere he wanted, and his roadie, used to get a lot of supplies from the drum companies, like the Slingerland representative, would give a Crip , a whole box of sticks, usually was 100 pair, I guess Crip would sell most of sticks , I would take 10 pair and put them in my stick bag, I use the same Slingerland model, gene Krupa. I remember they were green printing of the name Gene at Krupa I use them for many years, until I switched, to 5A or 5 B Grip would put maybe 10 pairs in Gene ‘s trap case . I wish I could send you a picture of the drums that I used when I was with Jean and of course Jamie was the same side, I have some pictures.

    Wow what a cool episode! I will be very excited to see how this set turns out. I totally get the whole fingerprint thing. I used that exact technique when I authenticated John Densmore's original Mod Orange floor tom. Any finish like Marine Pearl, Oyster finish, Mod finishes, etc. have a fingerprint and it's the best way to verify if something is authentic. Of course you need a good clear picture of the drum in question from back in the day but it really works great. You can even authenticade wood grain drums so long as the wood grains are visible enough in the older photo. Great job Bart!

    Revival Drums in Portland Oregon is a functioning drum shop with new and lots of used gear. They're also a kind of museum with a selection of ancient kits with Chinese tack heads on the toms, calf skins on the snares and bass, and gigantic diameter, shallow depth kicks from the 30's and 40's. Floor hats, hoop mounts all round the top of the kick...lots of old stuff there.

    Good evening Bart, I wonder if it would be possible for you to forward a question to Brooke Stiegler for me? Starting back in 62 I played drum clinics opposite Gene Krupa for Dahlgren Thompson Drum shop Brooks has stated in one of your podcast the gene had a 20 x 20 floor tom! Was that a custom-built drum for Krupa? When I work at the Drum Shop the biggest floor Tom in a slingerland catalog what's 18 x 20. Sincerely JW. Miller❤

    • @DrumHistoryPodcast
      @DrumHistoryPodcast  Před rokem +3

      Hey JW, thank you for watching and the great question. Here is the response from Brooks - “the very first 20 x 20 floor Tom is listed in the Slingerland catalogs were the very first postwar catalog in 1947. Gene started playing 20 x 20 floor toms in the late 1940s. From then until sometime around the mid 60s he used a 20 x 20 exclusively. After that he went back to the 16 but he always had a 20 x 20 for larger bands. Even had one when he came out of retirement in 1970 and had that one until he passed away. That 20 x 20 is now in London in Charlie Watts collection.”

    Great episode awesome!! But I don’t understand “fingerprint” I understand his explanation no one wrap is alike, but why does that mean it was specifically GK kit or does that mean it’s definitely slingerland kit why was it such an important clue to gene Krupa’s personal kit

    • @DrumHistoryPodcast
      @DrumHistoryPodcast  Před rokem +2

      Great question. As you said, each wrap has its own "fingerprint" by way of the markings and layout of the white marine pearl but the fingerprint method in this instance is referring to how the swirl and markings on the 2023 set can be matched exactly to the historical photos of Gene playing the set. So Steve and Brooks can look at the side of the snare drum on the 2023 kit in person, and then look at a 1955 picture of the snare (or any drum) and see the exact same pattern which can help narrow it down. Hopefully I explained that clearly - I appreciate you watching!
