Prof. Harjeet Singh Gill is an internationally acclaimed linguist, philospher and literary scholar, hailing from Amritsir, Punjab, India. He did his PhD in Linguistics in 1962 under HA Gleason (Jr) from Hartford, USA. After producing A Reference Grammar of Punjabi (it resulted in the Linguistic Atlas of Punjab), he started working with Andre Martinet in France. Then, Punjabi University invited him to establish the Department of Anthropological Linguistics in 1968. He developed a semiotic methodology to analyse literary, cultural and sacred texts. He worked in areas as varied as structuralism, dialectology, language and culture, folklore, arts and religion. UGC nominated him National Professor of Linguistics (1986) and Punjabi University conferred Honorary DLitt (1997) on him for his contribution to Punjabi language and literature, culture and folklore.He was a Professor of Linguistics and Semiotics in centre for Linguistics and English from 1984 to 2000 at JNU, New Delhi.

ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਚਰਚਾ। ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਪੱਧਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ। 'ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਭਰ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦਾ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਹੈ। ' ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਦੀ ਵਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਪੈਸੇ (ਰਾਇਲਟੀ) ਮਿਲ' ਰਹੀ ਆ। ਇਹ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
