    Kind of amazing how much animation is missing from the Sega CD version. Seems like they sacrificed a lot for those big characters... maybe too much. The music is so much better on the Sega CD, which is to be expected, but honestly it doesn't feel like they spent much time at all with the Genesis soundtrack.

    I have both versions and greatly prefer the Sega-CD one (also have it on Neo Geo CD by the way). You get the full-size sprites of the Neo-Geo, a proper 320*224 resolution (unlike PCE and SNES, both consoles have blurry pictures on CRT because of horizontal stretching). Soundtrack is the Neo-Geo one, another win right here. I also think Funcom did a much better job at using the MegaDrive color palette, the sprites and backgrounds are extremely pretty and have better gradients. Some backgrounds also use black in a pretty artistic way to create strong shadows, as well as having much more depth. Overall, Sega-CD version is the most faithful port as far as we look at graphics and sound, after the 3DO one of course.

    I think the MD version has more merit than the SCD since the entire graphic section was remade both the characters and the scenarios to fit the limitations of the cartridge memory and still give us a very dignified conversation. The SCD even when it has aspects that make it superior in most of the occasions it is noticed a wasted of the capacitations of the SCD reason why it loses merit.

      Hold on a minute...actually Takara could have implemented sprite scaling on the Sega Genesis port of Samurai Shodown. Further, the bit about Earthquake not fitting into the memory of the Genesis just flat doesn't make any sense. They could have made him from multiple parts as many other developers did for giant boss characters in games. My God man, look at Thunder Force IV's bosses or Gunstar Heroes bosses as examples of what can be done on a bone stock Genesis. Oh and Thunder Force IV was only on a 16meg cart for that matter.
      Addendum- The Snes port of Samurai Shodown had Earthquake not because of memory or that it had the ability to do something the Genesis could not. No, the Snes port featured tiny characters throughout the entire game. It was as if the camera was zoomed all the way out making the characters very small. The Genesis had the camera zoomed all the way in which made the characters about twice the size of the Snes port.

    Hard one as they both have advantages over each other. Sega CD resolutions appears higher than the Genesis with full screen being displayed and improved audio. The Sega CD also has larger sprites, and are more colorful with additional frames of animations. The Genesis on the other hands doesn't have loading, has better ground detail, and the background has less dithering in most stages (6:00 mark). When you go to the 15:00 and 17:00 mark the Sega CD background is clearly superior but lacks the referee so it's a toss up regarding which one looks better. With my current 4K OLED and Dolby Atmos setup I'll go with the Sega CD as the superior version by a hair.

    Oooh, a toughie. Sega CD port seems to have the correct screens from the arcade for the intro, character win quotes, and ending, as well as slightly bigger character sprites, Earthquake being playable, and some noticeably more fluid animation. However, some of the stages appear to have been redesigned for the port (Nakoruru's notably) and looks like the referee and bystander that appear in the background aren't in the Sega CD port. Genesis port obviously lacks the correct arcade screens, Earthquake, and some character animations. However, it has no load times and has the referee and bystander background characters missing from the Sega CD port. Having played the Genesis port personally, it played and controlled rather smoothly, though does usually suffer slowdown if too many sprites are onscreen (most notable with Nakoruru and Galford due to the animals that accompany them during fights). As I never played the Sega CD port of this, I honestly can't say who would win this comparison since both have their pros and cons.

      As far as the sprite and background scaling goes, I imagine it wouldn't be as easy to include as you would imagine. I'm pretty sure this port was released sometime in 1994 and that is very important for what I have to say. By mid 1992 developers had created methods (through software) that enabled the Sega Genesis to utilize sprite scaling, period. There was no excuse for the Sega Genesis port not to feature some sort of scaling. It gets even worse when you consider the Sega CD was built with an ASCII chip specifically for scaling. There was just no excuse for either port to not feature the famous Samurai Shodown zoom.
    This business of Earthquake won't fit in the systems RAM is also total nonsense. How many Genesis games feature screen filling bosses? Quite a bit I'm afraid making Takara's excuse very flimsy. No, I'll tell you what happened...Takara bit off more than they could chew and blamed the hardware for their mistake. They built Samurai Shodown for the Sega Genesis, Snes, Sega CD, 3DO, Game Gear, Sega Master System, PC, and the freaking GameBoy. That's 8 wildly different platforms all at once by a small team.
    Addendum- For those that are going to come on here and say the same tired "The Genesis can't do scaling blah, blah, blah..." The entirety of Road Rash's gameplay is scaling (all of it). There are others but Road Rash is the most famous example. Oh and it isn't just a background layer but everything scales without any specialized chips. Had Sega and EA used a memory mapper it would have had a stable frame rate.

    I've said it for a long time, the Genesis version wipes the floor with the Sega CD version, lots of things that shouldn't be missing from the CD version is missing. • @cireza_
      @cireza_ Před 5 lety +1

      Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown on Sega-CD are actually the only ports that retain the full-size of the sprites (with the exception of 3DO). You have the right to prefer the scaled down sprites of the SNES or PCE displayed at 256*224, a resolution that adds blur on CRT because of the horizontal stretching. These two games played on Sega-CD on a CRT are perfectly crisp and totally destroy the other versions in terms of presentation. I greatly prefer having the full-size sprites and a 320*224 resolution, losing background details is less important.

    • @teamspirits732
      @teamspirits732 Před 5 lety

    • @cireza_
      @cireza_ Před 5 lety +1

      @@teamspirits732 I don't see a significant difference between MegaDrive and Mega-CD in terms of backgrounds. The Mega-CD uses different palettes, but otherwise, they are pretty close. The fact that the Mega-CD is more powerful has little to do with the complexity of the backgrounds. What is required is memory, and obviously the additional memory was used for the bigger sprites on Mega-CD. By targeting full sized sprites, developers of the Mega-CD versions probably ended with less memory available for the backgrounds than on MegaDrive, which would explain removing some backgrounds elements. And backgrounds are certainly not "more important" than retaining the original sprite size in a fighting game port.
