  • Introducing Lauren Clarke as Saoirse!
Lauren Clarke, from Newtownards, has been dancing since she was four years old. As a competitive dancer, she trained at Scoil Rince Realta, winning three Ulster titles, two Irish National titles, and ranking in the top ten dancers at the World Championships for three years running.
Lauren joined Lord of the Dance in 2019 at the age of 18. If you've followed Team Lord social media over the last few years, then you've seen her many times over the years in various videos -- but now, for LOTD's 25th anniversary show, we can for the first time show you a video of her performing a lead role.
The lead roles in Lord of the Dance are archetypes, and the role of Saoirse -- the "good girl" -- is a very difficult role to perform. Anyone performing Saoirse has to endear themselves to the audience, and it has to be genuine; the audience has to really care about the character for the drama to work. Lauren, fortunately, is an incredible show dancer as well as competitive dancer.
Speaking of incredible show dancing, this video also includes a new look at the haunting wind-up doll sequence, featuring Cassidy Ludwig as the Little Spirit. Cassidy holds the record for the most-viewed Irish dance video of all time, and in addition to being a top-shelf Irish dancer, she's also jaw-droppingly brilliant as the Little Spirit.
Planet Ireland arises! Tickets on sale now to LOTD's 25th anniversary show, 25 YEARS OF STANDING OVATIONS. See the classic magic -- with a new generation.

She is so beautiful! I have been waiting to see her become lead since she joined the troop! She is very well deserving! I adore her shes so cute! She has to be very proud of her journey, not only does she play the good girl, she also is a lead dancer for the bad girl as well, so she is one of the only dancers who has ever played both! I’m so proud and happy for her

If LOTD comes back to the USA anywhere near me, I'm getting tickets for the family. Haven't seen it live since 96' and would love to see it again.

I feel the same! I miss the old soundtrack and the "mystical" atmosphere of the show

The standard of production is not anywhere near as amazing as when it started. Feels like all MF cares about now of profit. It lacks soul and storytelling now

I wonder if Ronan Hardiman, the original composer, has some copyright issue or something, with the previous soundtrack to LOTD. Cause all the dances and themes are basically the same, but the music has been updated for virtually every piece.
It sounds like they had someone (or a few musicians) just adjust the tunes slightly…which is very easy to do for Irish music. I play fiddle & whistle, so I can tell you; the tunes do have a lot of similarities… eventually they all blend together, in a sense. So once you know it like a “language”, it’s very easy to just invent new tunes. As long as you write them down to remember 😊 But that’s clearly what was done here, just adjusted & edited from before. Unlike a show like Riverdance… can’t do the same for that. LOTD is closer to “real” Irish music than that. Bill Whelan wrote the music to Riverdance on piano as a Broadway-type stage show, influenced by Irish, classical, jazz and world music. Very complicated stuff. LOTD is much closer to “traditional”. As in, if you play Irish music, you can easily learn the tunes by ear. Riverdance requires sheet music to get right. But I digress.
I will say, though, I like when the whistle solo comes in here. That’s a nice touch. But I prefer the previous music for what it was… Ronan Hardiman really wrote some nice tunes and kept it close to “trad”.

According to a former dance teacher who was with the show, apparently MF didn't want to pay the royalties to RH as it was a large amount of money so hence he got new music for it

I like the previous, original tunes better! Everything about this newly updated show screams “modern Celtic music” or “Gaelic fusion” and gimmicky shamrocks to me… I say this as a fiddler and as a whistle player since 2001. There’s a fine line between traditional and modern, and it can absolutely be tread upon, I believe… and I am in no way a purist, but I also don’t like going SO FAR into the modern side of things that it sounds gimmicky or cheapened. I know this is a modern show, it’s not the traditional aspect, I get it. I’m just saying I don’t care for these new tunes. 🤣 🤷🏼‍♂
Another example - “Breakout” from LOTD. The concept is basically the same: the good girls vs. the ‘bad’ bitch. They dance a treble jig, followed by a double jig where they “strip”, but the tunes are very… children’s Irish dance-competition-sounding? Even though it was never “trad”, the original score had a “traditional” enough of a feel, I thought, to at least SOUND like REAL Irish music. Whether it was over-produced or not. Even when flatley went on with Feet of Flames, and some new pieces were added like ‘Dance above the Rainbow’, or ‘Dance of Love’ (which was just the set dance ‘King of the Faeries’!), they didn’t sound outright gimmicky… or like a child’s dance competition Cd.
