Undertale has been out for a while, and we always assumed that Papyrus was the tall brother. Looks like we were wrong! Lumpy Touch (me) used his incredible pixelart skills to peek between the pixels of Undertale and made an insane discovery: Sans is the tallest of them all!

This is an interesting one: Toby originally meant to make Sans this tall, but ended up deciding later that it worked better if there was more of a height disparity between him and Papyrus as a thematic mirror to their brotherly relationship. Rather than needing to redo all the sprites from scratch he just shrunk them down to save on time.
That's pretty great. 😂
To add to this Tobey wanted sans to be a gentle giant but because there were already so many tall characters (asgore ,undyne, toriel, papyrus) he thought that their sprites were too similar and needed some variety at least for the early parts , because later on we meet alphys another short character
There's also a chance that for the more impactful moment of the game , right before the asgore fight having an 8 foot giant might not deliver a as impactful of a moment
Sometimes, when it comes to gamedev, you gotta get crafty. Mad respect for repurposing the tall sprites but still making them clean and readable. Masterclass stuff.

Fr undertomb looked so much more unique than horror tale, I don't know the story behind why it was changed but it's a shame it was overshadowed.

@Undyne yeah, some confusing unexplained controversy happened between it and horror tale, all we know is undertomb used to also be called horrortale before the horrotale thats commonly known today took over. undertomb was the same basic premise of horrortale but instead of being "oohh sans but with blood" the characters were these intimidating towering figures carrying lanterns, sans and papyrus are the only designs I can say are actually a part of tomb since the naming crap we can't tell which designs are for undertomb (the og horrortale) or the horrortale by sourapplestudios.

One of the interesting thing about all this is the famitsu interview in 2020, where he revealed he originally wanted to make Sans the tall one and papyrus the little one, because Sans is the older brother, but thought it'd be funnier if it was the other way around. He also had a Famitsu Column in 2019 apparently that also reflects this.
I appreciate the inversion! It's funny how the game plays with our expectations so much.

Toby said in a (now deleted) tweet that Sans was once very tall, but one time, a prank of his backfired leading to the Library sign falling on him, which squished him to the height we now know. This is also the explanation on why the Library sign is spelt wrong.

With lumpy I can't tell if it's an elaborate shitpost or an actual thing
this is actually confirmed to be a glitch. In the "Famitsu Column" series in 2019, Toby Fox stated (paraphrased) "Sans was actually meant to be the tall one and Papyrus was meant to be shorted, subverting the 'big tall dumb goon' trope as Sans is actually quite knowledgeable. However, when I started playtesting the game I accidentally switched the height values for Papyrus and Sans, but I liked it so much I decided to keep it as is."
So not only is Sans tall, but Papyrus is actually SHORT!

Papyrus being short makes so much sense because he's a goofy puffball that gets annoyed easily, but It Is cursed to think about
Sakurai has actually once found about this when he was looking for a good design while making the model for sans's mii fighter costume. And actually looking up the code of SSBU, there is a scrapped taller design of the costume deep within the files that is only possible to recreate by making your mii the tallest height it can be. Even if is not exactly the height he is in the files, they are both similar to eachother.
Probably for the best, generally the smaller Miis are better/higher tier. I think it's safe to say a super tall Sans Mii woulda gotten dunked on.

I swear this is why Undertale is so unique. Normally you would have a small ball of energy in the tall lazy dummy, but then with a tall energy confident skeleman, you gots Papyrus, and a short lazy skeleman, you got Sans. It just fits.... Never once did I think it was off that the two were a strange hight for their personalities. I love these skelebros, they are awesome.

2. if sans was only 25% of his height, that means we can add 75% of his height, but to do that we have got to add 175%, as 75% would decrease instead of increase, and then we translate 4'11" to just inches, then we get 59 inches, and 175% of 59 is 103 inches, convert that to feet, and we get 8'7",

There is an explainable theory. Sans uses tricks of the mirror to appear smaller than his brother to help boost Papyrus' ego more. By convincing everyone he's the smaller one, he makes Papyrus seem more grander.
He's just being a good big brother by making sure The great Papyrus takes center stage. It's why he goes to Grillby's so much, he can be his normal tall self around others on his own.
And the rest of Snowdin is on this out of respect for Sans' dedication as he is brother goals. Undyne and the rest of Monsterkind are not in on this though. Somehow he is able to trick Alphys recording equipment too.

Never thought someone would properly restore his tall sprite! This has been a whispered discussion for a while now in the community and nobody has properly tried to restore the tall sprite until now! It all started when people found those hidden cut scenes of sans interacting with his lamp! Although they were very broken and didn't even play his hand animation. However it's nice to see what was intended in full! Tall Sans was going to be revealed in that one book Toby made however instead kept it a mysterious scratched out drawing that some theorized to be Gaster. However the size of scratched out drawing says otherwise! Thanks Lump!

Short sans is honestly more intimidating and his nimble dodging ability makes more sense if he’s shorter and therefore has less weight overall.
I always imagined him as this behemoth of a magic user, but in a small menacing package. Despite his size and disposition, he can keep a room or corridor secure with sheer force of will. Without the need to rely on physical intimidation.
Plus having a very short skeleton dunking on evil nondescript children is just a funnier image.

Funny enough, Sans was originally going to have the power to stretch and compress his spine at will, and his dodge animation was going involve him ducking in an exaggerated motion (like an accordion). Unfortunately, it was scrapped because Toby thought it relieved too much of the built-up tension in the fight.
As a person with a compression fracture of the spine, I can say that it would be painful

Fun fact: Toby Fox featured a short teaser for undertale on his twitter during early development, and you can actually see an unchanged sprite of tall sans in a picture frame. He and papyrus stood at the exact same height in the picture. Sadly the tweet was deleted a short time later for unknown reasons
