I mean the game is called "The beast inside", not much surprise there. The title on it's own could easily reference the idea of a beast in 'The Lord of Flies'. So I think it was pretty clear it was going to end with the protagonist being the bad guy. I'm not going to fault it too much for sticking with the concept, but that being said maybe it's high time future horror games move away from this.
Also when they use this trope they often make the "good half" extremely sympathetic and the "bad half" outright killing machine, like who even is any of those things?

Though, even with that I do find it noticeable the Emma never actually did deny Adam's allegations and never confirmed that he could trust her. It's interestingly entirely plausible that he actually was right about her being a spy.
I think all his work was in his head, but since he was actually doing things she just assumed it was legit. If I recall, they never discussed what the "threat" actually was. For him, it was commies, but on her end she just thought someone was stalking them cuz it looked like someone broke in. (Which was just Adam anyway.) If they had 0 communication as a couple, it's definitely possible. Though a bit dumb. The other ending does go with the assumption that she is a spy, though again it's likely all in Adam's head.
I feel like when most people have guessed the twist in the concept demo it's time to consider that it's not worth teasing it out for an extra 2 to 3 hours.
Which sucks cuz the voice acting is pretty great (although I hated how overexaggerated some bits were...). I just looked away and imagined good movement during those scenes haha

I don't know what happened to the horror indie scene, but right now it feels like I'm watching a rotting corpse getting milked to death.
This is the only way I would have been able to see the full game. I would have said fuck it at those water chase areas and never play it again. Zero replayability. So thanks to John!
One thing I've noticed about psychological horror and the "bad dad simulator" comment: if the father is the bad parent, you always play as him. If the mother is the bad parent, she's always a ghost or crazy person that you fight/survive against. Kind of a weird trend.
Story wise, I totally agree that Adam's parts could've been excluded. But imo, they could have been integrated better if maybe the curse had left Nicholas unable to move on as a spirit and the "Soviets" Adam was afraid of was was actually just Nicholas' spirit trying to get him to leave and Nicholas' perspective was a sort of experience of the future, seeing Adam arrive at the house. So, like they were unknowingly each others enemy? And the point of convergence ends up being like a point where the spirit and physical worlds kind of collide and the end is Adam choosing to leave or stay or something? And just straight up SCRAP the whole killing your wife thing, that's such a weak plot 🙄

Any scenario where you wander aimlessly waiting for progress to happen. - Insta-death QTEs and one-hit bosses. - Excessive notes that are the only form of world and character building. - "Mental illness" trope, where someone with PTSD, DID, ADHD or mild anxiety is a mental wreck who can't control their actions. - Shitty flashlights. - Implausibly large houses/apartments. - Pre-made Unity assets.

I completely get you with horror games at the moment, it's the same old tropes over and over. The only horror games I seem to enjoy are really off the wall or experimental otherwise as you said "the twist" can seen a mile away! Good on you for finishing this though, I can't say I'd have had the patience to (you saved me the trouble of playing it).

Oh John...you deserve a medal for finishing this on beast mode...or at least compensation. Bonus points for the work you put into figuring out the borked quicktimes, and bonus bonus points for the Danganronpa music! So here's my issue with the game, and bear in mind I've watched two and a half playthroughs before this one: It just doesn't come together well. I keep asking why we are playing both of these stories instead of just one, and there's really not much more of a connection then they are related/have the same mental health issues. Then they throw around all these red herrings only to say nope, it really was what you guess in the first hour or so. I feel like if you took out Adam's story, you would have the same effect really, and serving up two stories just winds up being confusing. It's a shame, because they did some cool things. Oh, and that difficulty spike between modes? Ridiculous.

The Danganronpa investigation music for the QTEs had me in absolute stitches. I wasn't a fan of the game, but your jokes and frustration had my roommate and I cracking up constantly!
raaah its unfortunate you had these performance issues, i like everything this game tried to do but desperately hoped it wouldn't be the same story everyone always tells there was room for a red herring and i was hoping it would be that, atleast it wasnt just another walky-readathon it had some stuff to differentiate. problem I find is people are so caught up in these accessible means of game development making them higher res, but with zero mechanic development or knowledge of programming, this was a step in the right direction

Replayed the first 3 chain to wall jump the qte is switching between left and right click and controller has color coded buttons. 1st and 2nd was right 3rd was left. The comp. image shows only failure with the right click which can be a simple mistaken or the mouse has problems with right click.

Did they use motion-capture? I've noticed sometimes that weird erratic body movements often go hand-in-hand with bad motion capture.

LIST OF THINGS TO BAN FROM HORROR GAMES:
- "You were the killer all along!" psychological shenanigans.
- Looping hallways, tunnels, rooms. Any scenario where you wander aimlessly waiting for progress to happen.
- Insta-death QTEs and one-hit bosses.
- Excessive notes that are the only form of world and character building.
- "Mental illness" trope, where someone with PTSD, DID, ADHD or mild anxiety is a mental wreck who can't control their actions.
- Shitty flashlights.
- Implausibly large houses/apartments.
- Pre-made Unity assets.
Hah, I thought you didn't acknowledge his last name being Hyde earlier because it was too obvious. The game was... not subtle, to say the least. It's a shame they fell back on the same old bloody story that so many hack-job indie horror games have tried to tell. At least it led to an amusing playthrough. Thanks for trudging through the game to bring us viewers so much entertainment!

I completely get you with horror games at the moment, it's the same old tropes over and over. The only horror games I seem to enjoy are really off the wall or experimental otherwise as you said "the twist" can seen a mile away! Good on you for finishing this though, I can't say I'd have had the patience to (you saved me the trouble of playing it).

John if you are serious about playing other kinds games I would be so happy! I think it would be great for your attitude towards your work and your enjoyment. I would personally love it if you played more point and click adventure games. Or just more indie games in general!
Oh John...you deserve a medal for finishing this on beast mode...or at least compensation. Bonus points for the work you put into figuring out the borked quicktimes, and bonus bonus points for the Danganronpa music!
So here's my issue with the game, and bear in mind I've watched two and a half playthroughs before this one: It just doesn't come together well. I keep asking why we are playing both of these stories instead of just one, and there's really not much more of a connection then they are related/have the same mental health issues. Then they throw around all these red herrings only to say nope, it really was what you guess in the first hour or so. I feel like if you took out Adam's story, you would have the same effect really, and serving up two stories just winds up being confusing. It's a shame, because they did some cool things. Oh, and that difficulty spike between modes? Ridiculous.
Between the long boring reads and the long boring puzzles, John was so funny that made this video worth the watch!

And I'd be up for watching you play some other types of games, play what you want, it's not as fun to watch if you're not having any fun

The Danganronpa investigation music for the QTEs had me in absolute stitches. I wasn't a fan of the game, but your jokes and frustration had my roommate and I cracking up constantly!
raaah its unfortunate you had these performance issues, i like everything this game tried to do but desperately hoped it wouldn't be the same story everyone always tells there was room for a red herring and i was hoping it would be that, atleast it wasnt just another walky-readathon it had some stuff to differentiate. problem I find is people are so caught up in these accessible means of game development making them higher res, but with zero mechanic development or knowledge of programming, this was a step in the right direction

Replayed the first 3 chain to wall jump the qte is switching between left and right click and controller has color coded buttons. 1st and 2nd was right 3rd was left. The comp. image shows only failure with the right click which can be a simple mistaken or the mouse has problems with right click.

Hello John, the reason you were struggeling with the mouse in the well part is because the QTEs used both left and right mouse clicks. Loved the video and your input.
