My parents were Creoles (mixed blood) from Sumatra and Java. 16 members of their
family (8 children, 2 toddlers) were slaughtered by Pemudas in November 1945. It is true that Sukarno didn't give the order to commit the Bersiap purges, but he was President of the Republic, and his 1945 food boycot for the Dutch and Creoles did not help. The Bersiap purges (1945-47) were not that random, as many were trained and supplied by the Japanese army. Targeted victims (thousands) were Dutch citizens, Creoles, Chinese, Moluccan and also 'suspicious Indonesian' citizens.
the people you mentioned are those with a special status, except for the suspicious Indonesians, these people enjoyed a good life which the Indonesians didn't get, they were also subjected to insults, forced to work in appalling conditions, robbed, so as soon as there is an opportunity to pay back they would do it, that is very human nature, violence breeds violence and don't forget they have been mistreated for hundred of years in their own land, can't you see that.

De terminologie "bersiap " kennen ze in de Indonesiche historie niet.......deze werd / woord veelal gebruikt door indische nederlander.
Ik ben zelf nieuwsgierig waar het woord vandaan kwam ....
Want het woord " bersiap" betekent in het Indonesich zoiets als : gereed maken.....klaar zijn......

@@jeroenvandorp5529 Beste Jeroen, de term Indisch zwijgen is een echt fenomeen. Als je meer te weten wilt komen dan kun je bijvoorbeeld het Nationaal Archief raadplegen. Zij beheren heel wat documenten m.b.t. onze koloniale geschiedenis. Je kunt denken aan stamboekgegevens van militairen en/of ambtenaren. Maar ook beheren zij bijvoorbeeld de interneringskaarten die de Japanners toentertijd opstelden om de POW's te documenteren. Dus stel dat jouw oom na de capitulatie van Nederlands-Indië in '42 gevangen is genomen door de Japanners dan bestaat er een grote kans dat er van hem een interneringskaart bestaat. Hier kun je allerlei interessante gegevens op terug vinden. Niet alle documenten kun je vinden door simpelweg een naam in te voeren soms moet je echt zelf in de archieven duiken. Maar de interneringskaarten zijn aardig goed gedigitaliseerd dus hierbij een linkje!

Leerzame video. Ik denk niet dat het nodig is voor de regering in Indonesië om excuses aan te bieden voor iets wat 70 jaar geleden gebeurd is en waar de huidige leiders en functionarissen niets mee te maken hebben. In die zin houd ik me aan het oude standpunt van Rutte vast dat excuses onnodig zijn voor iets wat de voorgangers gedaan hebben (is hij inmiddels van gedachte van veranderd, maar goed). De koning heeft het wel gedaan en dat is zijn keus. Het gerucht ging overigens dat Juliana ook al excuses wilde aanbieden maar daar trok het toenmalige kabinet een stokje voor. Wat voor mij belangrijk is is dat men zich bezig houdt met grove mensenrechtenschendingen die zich nu voordoen, nu is dat West Papoea en 20 jaar geleden was dat Oost-Timor waar een massaslachting heeft plaatsgevonden en inmiddels dus bevrijd is van Indonesische overheersing.
Als er toch excuses komen (weliswaar door de huidige of toekomstige president die toen niet eens geboren was) vind ik het wel een mooi gebaar, maar dat is wel wat het slechts is, een gebaar. Het leven inclusief eventuele ellende wat niet verholpen is gaat wel door.
Bedankt voor het bericht. Je zienswijze kan ik mij wel in vinden. Een formele compensatie zou ik dan ook niet voor pleiten. Excuses hoeft voor mij ook niet, mits de Indonesische regering erkend dat bepaalde groeperingen zich hebben misdragen in naam van de pas uitgeroepen Republiek Indonesiē. Standbeelden zonder context op de locatie waar slachtingen hebben plaatsgevonden vind ik persoonlijk niet fraai. Ik hoop dat daar dan ook verandering in komt. Een objectief informatiebord zou al een heel verschil maken.
Zo maakten NSB-ers zich nog nuttig daar.
Dank voor het maken van deze docu-reportage. Gezien de huidige situatie met bekendmaking van onderzoek, opeens (weer) zeer in het nieuws. Unfortunately, this side of the coin is never truly made public. Only the side where the Dutch polder soldiers came to Indie and committed acts of war (during politionele acties) is put to the forefront.

My family (all 4 grandparents and their families) lived through this. Male relatives coming home from the japcamps and the female and young kids (incl 3 aunts who were born in 42-43), who remained in the camps. Simply because it wasnt safe for them to return to their homes. Them, and many more like them, had to live through the fear of being 'tjintjangd' (1 of my great grandfathers was). Please spread this word and have the current indonesian government admit to these war crimes against humanity. These were acts of war against civilians, not against regular troops. We, the Dutch and most notably the Indische Nederlander en sympatisanten are waiting 75-80 years for an apology.

Ben zelf indo, 1ste generatie in Nederland geboren. Niemand van mijn familie praatte erover, het Grote Zwijgen. Hoe traumatisch het moet zijn geweest, bleek wel uit voortdurende nachtmerries die sommigen hadden. Echt, ik ben blij dat mij dit bespaard is gebleven. Heb indonesische collega's die nooit iets gehoord hebben over deze periode toen ze nog in Indonesië woonden.
Wij kunnen ons inderdaad gelukkig prijzen dat wij dit niet hebben meegemaakt.
Is bekend of jouw voorouders in het KNIL hebben gediend? Indien dat het geval zou zijn, zijn er mogelijkheden om te traceren in welke eenheid de betreffende persoon heeft gediend. Dan zou je iets meer te weten kunnen komen over je familiegeschiedenis voor wat betreft Indonesië, en het Grote Zwijgen daardoor verbreken. Als je dat zou willen natuurlijk.

Politionelle Acties and Bersiap is not comparable. The first one was officially organized by the government/kingdom of the Netherland. While bersiap was not organized by the indonesian government and therefore they can't be hold accountable for that. Fact is that ethnic purges like this are nothing new to Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the largest genocide countries. In '65 over 2 million innocent civilians suspected of'communist alliance' were tortured, raped and murdered by Pemuda. Majority of them were Chinese. They're stories have never been told and their mass murderer Suharto was granted Heroic status in Indonesia.
Victims today are still being silenced and stigmatised.
Only recently they are speaking up.
Since the release of the movie : the Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer which gives an idea of how the human rights situation in Indonesia remains until today.

Masa Bersiap and Bung Tomo are heroes. If we not killed Dutch people back then (civilians or not) Indonesia would be like South Africa. Dutch civilians would still be here and become ruling white class. But after the Bersiap and Dutch explusion from Indonesia in 1957 we are free from ruling white class and become free (although still have many problem in Soekarno era).
We will not apologize for the past, as the Dutch king apologized it's good and nice, but we never asked it at the first place tho. He did it by his will, so it's not our fault that he apologized. If Indonesian government apologized to Netherlands it will be very insulting for us to apologized to the former master, we would protest massively to our government if they even think to apologize.
Now Indonesia and Netherlands in good terms and prospering together. So we don't bother very much.

This answer was to be expected. Coen operated in a different context. The main thing is that our costums have changed quite dramatically between 1600 and the 20th century.

@@Eza_yuta The 'bloodbath of Banda' occured in the context of a colonial war between the VOC and the English. And furthurmore hostilities between the Dutch and the people living on the Banda islands. Which started when the Dutch admiraal Verhoef and two other commanders were brutally murdered when they were invited for negotiations.
