Do you think that Jake Perry was a real person and generaly it was some kind of his real story, or you think that Simmons created Perry and also he created all That story telling about their meeting , the box with notes etc.

Mr. Simmons definitely could have used the services of a good editor with this book. At least one third of the book is climbing detail and minutiae that no one--except an avid mountaineer--would care about (and even then I have my doubts).
The story was typical Dan Simmons: written well with regard to descriptions, dialogue, and general character behavior-- but also hindered by a meandering plot/narrative structure.
Then there's the spavined use of token red shirt characters, token cultural effluvia, and token mysticism, in place of any sense of actual setting.
But this is what you get when you're a successful writer with few obstacles, someone who doesn't plot his novels (which shows), doesn't have an editor (clearly), and is in love with the sound of his own voice (this novel could, and should, have been a novella, at best).
On the whole, it's worth a read, but only if you are really interested in the time period as it relates to mountaineering. If you're looking for a more interesting novel, with deep characters, an involving plot, and a narrative that sets up and fulfills its intent, look elsewhere.
