Al Had definitely mastered his instrument...such ease...such finesse..such taste..! Definitely the King of the Trumpet
Louis Armstrong and Harry James are my favs.
@Dan Dugan ... so true, my brother so true.
But I also like Bill Conti, and I like Maynard Ferguson's playing style ... when he played the Theme from Rocky-- Gonna Fly Now.
He really was great. Watching Al Hirt blow a trumpet live were amazing childhood experiences for me. He had the most incredible embouchure!
Al's right up there with the all time greats, for sure!
Carin
Never heard him talk till this video. Pure New Orleans baby!
One of the most underrated trumpet players ever!
Are there any wellrated trumpet players?
Is he under rated or just forgotten by today's players because they were brought up by band directors who much preferred Maynard and Chuck and Doc? I love those guys too but Al is just as good but had success with songs that were a little "corny" and appealed to their parents a little too much. He also didn't travel to hundreds of high schools and colleges like Maynard and Chuck and Doc did nor have the nightly national TV gig that Doc did for 30 odd years. To me Al has always seemed like the most natural player who made it look very easy.
one of the greatest trumpet players ever,...He is super good...
yes, just listen to i love paris.
Such a wonderful human being with chops and dexterity like few others possessed .He was trully a technical genius who is highly respected by all trumpet players everywhere .
Trumpeters pay attention! Loud/soft, fast/slow, raucous/melodic the embouchure never changes. The cheeks only move whilst taking a breath. It all looks effortless, but more importantly . . . . . . he still ENJOYS it! He's still having FUN!!
Very well said, and all true!
I played with his daughter in high school band, she was amazing as well.
My grandfather dated one of his daughters when he was in college in LA
i wish i could play trumpet with one hand!
he was the total package and left behind a legacy of beauty
that most trumpet players can only dream of.
Al’s playing reminded me of my childhood! Good memories!
I got to see him in1971 when I was 13 years old. I still have his autograph. He was so great.
He taught me how to play trumpet. I got to play alongside he on Burbon
Bless the sacred memory.
I saw him as an eighth grade trumpet player here in Chicago at the Edgewater Beach Hotel... he was a trumpet god...
A good trumpet on a wailing ballad by Al Hirt is pretty hard to top! I've known a few great trumpet players and had the privilege of accompanying seeral of them on the piano, but I never met Honey-Horn Hirt, I would have loved to have jammed with him! He can "tongue" on that horn like no one else in the world!
He truly had the most incredible embouchure I've ever seen & heard! My dad took me to see him several times when I was a kid in the 60s. Amazing!
Well loved what a great performer, His Christmas album is beautiful.
I never hear it,you should have mentioned it two months ago
when i was a kid they played this song at the july 1 legion picnic constantly all day over and over..until close..every year ...memories...
That's my uncle!
+Carlos Hirt How blessed you are. I missed seeing him in person by about a year. He's been an idol to my family since I was little. My grandfather was a professional player. My grandfather always said Al Hirt can play 3 notes to your one. :)
Cool! My dad had lots of his LPs and we'd always ask for "Java!" That was early 1970's. I'm 51 now, Dad has gone on. Your Uncle and my Dad are forever entwined in my life and memories of it. Al Hirt was, IS, great. We could all slow down a bit and put on those old records. People have forgotten how to Relax. The older generations knew how to-just put on some "Al."
It's a pleasure to tell you that the sounds that your uncle made are the background of many memorable times with my family growing up in the 60's. He was played all the time when we went to drive-in movies.
that s my cousin...…...wh ois your father?
Carlos Hirt is he still alive
A TRUE MUSICIAN!!!!!!, I really loved his music!!!!
look up the video of him and Maynard playing in a club with Herbie Hancock on piano.
So iconic! Flawless
saw Al along with Pete Fountain in about 1963 with my parents in Dallas TX and it inspired me as a young boy of 7 years old to take up the jazz trumpet to which I played up until about the age of 30.I don't play anymore due to COPD but Al was a influence. As a side note at this concert I mentioned during intermission my dad ask Al if he'd like to have a drink and Al took my dad's flask full of bourbon and downed it in less than a minute then handed it back empty. My dad had a WTF look on his face lol. But Al was gracious and gave him a fifth. Funny the thing's you remember as a kid. RIP Dad and Al. Memorable evening for a 7 year old kid.
He was an inspiration but also a discouragement when I tried to keep up with him!!
Great story!
He makes it look so easy yet sound so awesome! Honey In The Horn my favorite album if I had to pick just one!
He was one of my heros.
I played the sax part of Java in my junior high orchestra circa 1964. Great music from Al!
I first met Big Al in Ybor City in the 80’s , and he played for just me in the rain, and we became friends ever since until he went home...he has always been an enlightening to me .. he is the best!
thanks al for inspiring me to join the band in 64 and i told the director trumpet or nothing.
I think I saw him on Lawrence Well when I was a kid...and I was IMPRESSED!
Al is an inspiration! I'm learning to play--this instrument has taken me alot of places already--I had my horn autographed by Chris Botti in 2012(!!!!!) and I want to meet Herb Alpert, the person that was the inspiration to take up trumpet! Al Hirt was just incredible! All mentioned above are! I'm also a drummer, self taught, but I need lessons to get good on trumpet. I'm taking them now. This is great music and maybe I can play it someday too!! Awesome stuff!
If you end up as good as either one of the three you just mentioned I'll be a fan.
Thanks so much for posting that. Al was always one of my favorites...still is. He makes it look so easy!
Undoubtedly one of the best musicians I have ever seen ... Reference for many who enjoy and enjoy jazz ...
He never got the accolades he deserved. This is coming from a sax player!
What does being a sax player have to do with this statement?
The sax and trumpet are both wind instruments. A wind instrument player understands the challenges of breath control for a fellow wind instrument player.
Amazing talent.
I am enjoying every one of these videos....ive never been able to see al perform live until now thanx agin dude who ever you are
TOP mjusic man 👍
We love you Al!!!
Heaven has one great horn section; Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Herb Alpert, Louis Armstrong, Clarence [E Street Band] Artie Shaw and so many other greats!!++RIP++
+Steven Vensky - you're right, but luckily Herb Alpert is still an Earthling!
Thank you for the correction. Mea Culpa.♥
As of this time Pete Fountain is still around as well.
lots of great players all great enjoy them but al is The man
I got to see Al Hirt on this same tour I am pretty sure when he came to my college, Auburn University, about this time. I'll never forget his rendition of Carnival of Venice, or as he said it, "Coina Vulla Veniz" :-)
One of the greatest American musicians ever. Rest in peace King Al
For those who are ignorant of Al's ability, listen to his rendition of one of the great classical pieces that many instrumentalists have to play in one form or another: Check out his Carnival of Venice - Theme and Variations ... I played the trumpet well and could barely touch this piece much less make it incredible.
Excelent, congratulations, From Costa Rica
❤❤❤ I am old enuff to recall back then. I came here cause a beer commercial is in the noodle membank of AL on the French Quarter.
What a talented man
His trumpet had great sound.
go jumbo go.....its christmas in the summer! thanx for sharing dadogdidit1
Al was a great player
Espetacular coisa linda.
am amazed at how good this looks Chromecasted to my bigscreen.
In addition to being an incredible horn player, he also sports a magnificent beard here!
EXCELLENT!
AMazing double tonguing !
He’s AMAZING!!
I think we got us a horn player here boys.
Good songs from the good old days.
Showmanship!
More excellence probably he is part of the Heavenly Choir leading the Saint’s before we come marching in a number no man can number from every nation ,tribe and tongue praising the Lamb of God Haleluhia !!!
Amo essa melodia, tenho-a em minha mente desde criança, foi um sufoco achar
In the 60s the WMCA NYC Good Guys wrote station-related lyrics to his hit JAVA and they sang to it on LP "The WMCA Good Guys Sing".
Love the drummer too!
EXCELENT...THANKS🌟
Thanks for the Toon's Our pleasure to hear you play!
Years ago we were in New Orleans and saw shows by Al and Pete Fountain. They both are the greatest,
Wonderful !
The king
...the legend!...
It sure would have been a treat and a real contest to see Al HIrt go head to head with Herb Alpert!
*****
Al Hirt was one of the most technically proficient trumpeters , I think it could be shown by his playing of the Theme from The Green Hornet also his classical gig with the Boston Pops . A very gifted man RIP

Don't show your ignorance by putting down an artist you consider less talented. Al Hirt is probably one of the best if not THE best jazz trumpeter in the late 20th century. The fact is, Herb Alpert is a genius in his element of composition and performance. There's no mistaking him when he put his style on 60's hits to Christmas songs. It's really apples and oranges, as each is really in a category of their own. But I have found that judgements of peoples talents solely by the recordings they produced is a lousy way of evaluating the sum total, and that is where CZcams becomes invaluable. I didn't used to think much of Brian Setzer as far as a guitarist went, until I saw a youtube clip of him teaching. The guy absolutely blew me away with his guitar playing in that video. But even he said, in performances he simplified things, as there were distractions, adrenaline, etc. that made it difficult to do a performance showing all the guitar magic he knew. Of course, Al didn't seem to have that problem. He and Herb Alpert were and are my inspirations for playing the trumpet, although since then I have taken up guitar. So, in a way I guess I'm really agreeing with you, but don't like to see Herb Alpert put down. I apologize for the ignorance comment. I just love Herb as much as Al, and each did his magic in my memory for different reasons.
no comparison. Maynard and Al were in a video though. I might note I am excited though to see Herb this month in Maryland!! he's doing a small tour in the east
Al, Herb, Maynard, Doc--all distinctly different styles, tones and deliveries. Can't compare.
Qué gran músico es al hirt su música es excelente un fuerte abrazo al auditorio desde peña alta Tláhuac CDMX Luis Carbajal pro de tenis 15 de septiembre del 2023.
I grew up listening to this in early sixties my dad had them all boots Randolph and later herb Albert I took up drums but did develop the lip needed to play trumpet but like drums more
A little arrogant, exuberant, confident. But as a front man with talent?! It makes it more entertaining! I can’t stop playing Sugar Lips
He's The King
Let's put a statute of The Famous and my friend Al Hurt in Lee Circle.
AND PETE FOUNTAIN
( oh wait, wrong color. It'll never happen)
アル・ハートさんの高音は明るくてテクニックも素晴らしい自由自在だ。
my right ear love this.
Love Al Hirt! He's an alumni of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, one of the best in the world. I also graduated from this great school.
Piano player screwed up the intro at 5:20
Yes, he did.
Fabulous
Good old AL/ still winded
This video is missing one channel.
Let's Not Forget the Great Theme Song He Played from the "GREEN HORNET" TV Series. Nobody Had Ever Attempted to Play THAT After Mr. HIRT. Check it Out if You've Never Heard it and You'll SEE What I Mean. 🎶 🎵
Yes!

Grandisima puesta en escena de cotton candy y muy buen video. Gracias por subirlo.
Santa playing a trumpet!
1:13 lol! The tube steak in the white shirt is not enjoying this. I love Al Hirt!
Should have picked up a couple of sax players.
I saw him at Iowa State University, and his show would have been much better with a couple of music students sitting in.
I have the original record and this is so for beyond the talent of those years. If I tried to play along with this back then I would have put my trumpet up and quit. Haven't played since I got married 40+ yrs.
@5:20 - Ach! A clinker by the piano player!
...but, only on the left channel.
i have 6 of his albums-
Great
playing with one hand. He was very at ease with his horn. Pretty confident this man didnt need drugs to perform.
I think he was having circulation problems in his left hand which is why he kept pulling it away. He was dealing with a lot of health issues in his later years.
Maybe not "drugs" - but I'll betcha he's had plenty of booze in his time - plus that Louisiana cooking...
Actually, it was his addiction to the TOBACCO DRUG, which KILLED him!
