  • Thanks for watching our video on how we set up at outdoor shows! The end of the video shows the various displays and all our items. We hope you enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes of our booth set up and found it informative if you have your own booth. This booth display set up works well for our items we make and features several custom displays we made, but we hope it will give other makers some booth display ideas for their work. This set up was for the St. Albert Farmers’ Market in St. Albert, Alberta (outside Edmonton), but it’s the same set up we use for folk festivals, outdoor art markets or art walks, outdoor craft sales, and any other show we do outside.
For this market we brought a wide variety of items we hand make many of which are not available online presently (these are booth exclusive). We have done hundreds and hundreds of shows over the last 10 years and we have the outdoor booth set up down to around an hour with just one person setting up the booth with hundreds of handmade items. If you have any questions about our booth display ideas and setting up leave us a comment or email us.
The St. Albert Farmers’ Market is the largest outdoor market in Western Canada with over 250 vendors every Saturday selling produce, artwork, crafts, plants and home décor. There is a lot of fantastic art and crafts at this show and we have been doing it since 2009. Our booth number for 2018 is #59 right in front of St. Albert Place.

Thanks for the idea of propping up my jewelry trays! I've been doing the tiny Market on Saturdays fine tuning my display for my big 3 day show in a week. Last week, I sewed fitted table covers for my tables and have figured out how to make my lighted scenes show up outside. I've done shows off and on for a few years but two years ago, I totally changed what I make. And in the last 8 months, added a bunch of new3 type of items so I've had to revamp how I display. Thanks for the tips!

Very cool. :) The recycled containers might be better than the sandbags that come with some of the tents... hmm, I have had trouble with sand leaking in my vehicle... Thanks for sharing!
Hopefully we'll see you at a market soon!

Double bag your sand in the pntainers, ask your area feedstores for good used poly feedbags. Consider an inner plastic liner even then.

Great tips. Thank you. I’m doing a vintage market that will be in the evening. What would you recommend to use for lighting? I won’t have access to electricity. I will have a 10 x 10 canopy as well as a 10 x 8 open air. Thanks

I would ask the show promotor about lighting and tell them your concerns. Depending on how dark it gets, it will be difficult to load out, customers may get injured (as well as yourself) and there may be concerns about theft. Occasionally, based on those type of concerns the show promoter will make power available and you would bring an extension cord for some lights. If we use extension cords we tie down our cord with tent ties and put up some small flags to make sure people see the cord.
If they won't do that for you look into a long lasting work light (the kind mechanics or electricians use to work outside) as they are often weather proof. There are some at surplus stores, for trades people, that can be affordable. I used a construction light, that was battery pack, for a show that was not powered. The show was 3 days and after the first night, the show promoters ran electricity to the vendors because it became so dark it was hazardous.
There are also long lasting LED video lights that are rechargeable as well. Depending on what you sell, some lights make look better than others.

Hi Justin! I got the black tubs from Ikea a few years ago. I was just there recently and I noticed they only the the clear ones at our Ikea at the moment. They are exactly the same as the clear tubs but I liked the black as it conceals what is in the tub and looks better on the shelf!

Hi Leslie! I have a video on a step by step guide into find and starting Farmer's Markets. czcams.com/video/RyjaRbzZB2s/video.html The website we share in the video is a great resource on finding farmer's markets that include handmade items. I don't know too much about the flea market circuit as they are not prominent, for handmade items, where I am located. Also check out my video on where to find places online to sell. They include places you can sell with no set up fees. czcams.com/video/Ur39E0MltGw/video.html I also can give you a coupon for a course we made for Udemy, if you are interested. It's low cost, but I can make an additional coupon for those who are in need :) The course is just about everything you need to know about starting a handmade business. I hope some of this information is helpful!
