Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he made it. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. Joost himself said that his musical style is diverse. When Joost was asked what song they should listen to in order to understand you. He answered Florida 2009 (it's about his parents) and Wachtmuziek (it's about mental health). I recommend listening to them. You have to translate it, because he sings in Dutch.

@@FabianJ When you pay attention to the visuals and lyrics in the video, like at 4:12, you can see/hear the duality of his pain under all the happiness which tears him apart. At the hardcore/gabber drop he lets it all go, the last 20 seconds is the final hommage to his parents to tell them he is getting ready for a new chapter of his live.

The song is a tribute to his parents who both died at a young age. The lyrics are about living life as an orphan, which Joost is himself. That's why he says
'Euro-papa', 'being alone in Germany' and
'Papaoutai' (dad where are u?) and ends with this sad ending. His dad told him that there are no boundaries in the world, both in personal achievements and between countries.
He actually is quite a big musician in The Netherlands, . starting of as a youtuber to escape the troubles of life he eventually made his first album “dakloos” (homeless) since then he has released 8 albums which were all very successful with millions of streams. He is also a very nice and loving person.

It is a tribute song to his parents. He lost both parents at the age of 12 or 13. He enjoyed watching the Euro Song Contest with his father. He asked his father what boundaries were and he indicated that those are lines that people have agreed upon and have made up. The world has no borders. You can go anywhere, the world belongs to everyone. With this song he wants to end an unpleasant time for himself and tell his father that he was right. And thank them again.
Dutch people are very proud, disciplined and love parties. But we also have our sorrows and Joost does not run away from it and shares it. This way he can continue.

To answer your question as a dutch girl; the song is far from the genres I usually listen to BUT I’m actually obsessed with it 🤩 Gabber/hardstyle music is such a dutch product, we’ve never done this before at eurovision tho, and it was about time! I’ve been waiting for the dutch jury to be more daring and do something different than ballads. This song is such a breath of fresh air for me, a happy danceable melody with a very deep and emotional meaning lyrically! Joost as a person is such a delight and deserves the world, even without knowing him personally I feel so proud of him overcoming all the tragedy that happend to him and turning it into his driving force to achieve his dreams 🥹 I can’t wait to see this live on stage! Thanks for the support Fabian 🫶🏻

Joost lost his parents when he was 13 and 14. The lyrics relate to him missing his parents. Travelling through Europe, but he keeps feeling alone. But he listened to their advice, as he says at the end: "Dad (which is 'papa' in Dutch, therefore Europapa) told me that we are all humans ans that there are no boundaries. You see dad, I DID listen to you. Always missing you". The burning building at the end represents the end of his grief. And the burning photo is of him and his parents during a holiday somewhere in Europe. All at all, it is him saying he still misses them, but also an ode to them.

His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them. Joost Klein, droom groot. (Joost Small, Dream Big)

Joost Klein was orphaned at a youg age and his father told him once when they were living in a small rural place that there are no real borders they are a construct. So you can make your own world. The end and the burning is a metafor of saying goodby to the past, you cannot forever bring (sad) memories with you. Its what he explained on dutch tv interview when asked about the ending. The man in the car is DJ paul Elstak famous in the nineties. S10 a former eurovision entry is in the diner scene.

I am Dutch and really happy about the song. We kind of need this kind happy vibe in these times where for years drama is ruling the world. Really love the 90 s vibe from when I was young and the hardcore techno. At the same time it is not as superficial as it sounds. He starts telling that his father in a tiny village in the north of the country told him there are no boundaries, the world is out there and you can go there, by then he was still to small, had no money, no transport ect but now he is really going out there even though they are not here to witness it. Papa(dad) was right. There are no real boundaries not on land and not in opportunities. (He even designed the costum himself on a simple tablet and they managed to make it). So much fun, so much happyness and hope but still with a layer of sadness because it would have been nice if his parent where here to see it. And then ends that finally we are all just human beings and telling his dad that he still misses him every dad ,quote:" but see dad, I did listen to your message". Love the unexpected twists but mainly the song makes me smile a lott.

Lyricaly its actually pretty well constructed. He is using a lot of sentiment for not only the dutch people, but also using things that other countries can relate with. If you also listen closely, he uses a Scooter like intro, and on the second verse the melody is really 2 unlimited like. Who are all internationally superstars. Next to that he brings Gabber sentiment in the last dancey part, which is/was a very popular sub-culture where mostly 90 kids can identify them self. Then he starts the Drama part which brings you to a complete other emotion you were currently in. You start to listen, get captivated and emotional. I think this is very effective especially in events like Eurovision. We will see what it will bring us. I was really sceptical at first, but we have a definit banger here.

I'm Dutch. I know a bit of Joost. I didn't liked his style of music and was really afraid of his song for ESC. After the release I can't stop listening to it once in a while. Especially that last part (with the fire). That part gives me goosebumps.
Matbe you need to Google some stuff about Joost and listen to other songs he made. The song "Florida 2009" is one song of Joost that gives me goosebumps as well (especially the live at Pinkpop version)

I'm Dutch and for me personally the song is absolutely perfect. It unites both us and all of Europe from my perspective. Also, it has soo many references for both the native and the international watchers. You can really see he poured all his heart out into this one effort. Mind you, I really do not like this genre of music. But I have never been this proud of a Eurovision entry before.. It feels to me like one big tribute to both the NL and Europe

Europapa is a song about Europa (Europe) and his Papa (Dad) who died of cancer when he was young. DJ Paul Elstak also helped with this song, he even has a role in the video, he is in the car where Joost is sitting on at around 2:30.

    He's such a great guy.

Joost brings back the good vibs from the 90's. He adds the genre of Happy Hardcore to his song, which was very populair in the Netherlands back in the days. With song as I want to be a hippie and rainbow high in the sky. Even the producer (Dj Paul Elstak) of the last song plays a role in the film of Europapa as the driver in the car. Even new bands like electric callboy did revive the 90s rave styl in there music.
Joost wrote this song in honor of his parent, they died when he was very young

Joost is just in seventh grade when his father dies of cancer. Joost was twelve when his father died of cancer. At the time, he was just in the first year of grammar school in Leeuwarden. On his father's deathbed he promised him to become a writer. A year later, his mother also suddenly died. He is just twelve years old.

This music is not my type of music but somehow he did it for me. Totally stole my heart. It is music from my younger years, but I did not hang out in that scene. I do love he's using it. I'm Dutch. When I first heard Joost Klein was going to attend I was like a bit like: "Oh no we're going to be memeing." I didn't know much about his music, but I associated him with a crowd that's kind of close to a british "chav" or the russian "gopnik". But when I listened to it for the first time I knew we had a banger that represented a big culture in the Netherlands. And when the hardstyle part kicked in and they started to "hakken" (Dance style) it put the biggest nostalgic smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart. I'm now just scouting youtube for reaction video's to see how people who don't understand Dutch feel, and most have been positive! This might be the most excited I've ever been for a entry from my country.

  • @Jan_Koopman
    @Jan_Koopman Před 2 měsíci +1

As a Dutch person, I love this entry, especially because of the word play:
He dedicated this song to his parents, his father especially, because his father told him the world has no real borders, which is how the EU works: all you see of borders are signs: "You are now in [country]". "Europa" is the Dutch word for "Europe", "papa" means "daddy" -> "Europapa" = "Europe" + "daddy".
