Thank you Vasudev for giving a step by step break up of recording process! Can you explain a bit on when to use de-esser on vocals and what do we mean by sibilance. Perhaps it is easy to tell once you know how it sounds but just the word could be a new thing for newbies like me.
Hi Anish, let us give you some insight on this topic. A De-Essar is just a compressor specifically designed to reduce the ess sounds (also ch,jh,kh,ff,th sounds which do contain esses in some form). While lifting the vocals volume up by using compression and saturation these particular sounds gets boosted a lot and become very ear piercing if left untreated. A De-Essar is specially made to control such sounds in vocal frequency area where these ear piercing sounds reside. It's threshold is only sensitive to this particular area and controls the ear piercing ess sounds.
Sibilance is a figure of speech in which a hissing sound is created within a group of words through the repetition of ess sound. It refers to the high frequency components of certain vocal sounds.
While mixing vocals we need to take care of sibilance as well so that it should not be an unpleasant effect (Harsh Hissing).
