My first thought was this really needed power washing and cleaned up, then you might be able to see more of what's working and not working..... just a thought..............................

I have thousands of hours making square bale (idiot cubes). I was so happy to get off of the dairy farm I grew up on. Now I miss it. I miss the smell of newly cut hay and the satisfaction of seeing the stack when I was done. I loved watching this video, thank you.
BTW: Spreading the manure, not so much.
On a heavy field like that you may want to slow down a bit when you first cut , it looks to me by the way its turned over your mower wasn't keeping up with your ground speed that was a heavy field

You really should consider replacing those worn out sicle sections. they do make a tool to do it without removing the sicle bar from the mower. Also when you get into that heavy clover and grass you probably want to slow your ground speed and increase your rpm. I think with those adjustments you will get mucch better results. (At least that's what my Dad told me to do 50 years ago) Happy Trails, Evan
I agree with this statement Evan, you did cut it a little too fast, so just slow it down and bring up the rpm. I would try going back over the field once you get the bales off and cut the opposite way you cut the first time or just try to cut the opposite way the next time.
Evan if you shorten the bales they will be lighter to lift
You need to replace you knife sections on your haybine and slow down mowing you will get better cut quality.
And slow ground speed down some.

Bale what you have down. Change all the haybine sickle knives and recut the second field at a higher rpm and lower gear. Then worst case, rake it off the field. If it looks like good hay, bale it, store outside covered and feed first.
The knotters on square balers are mechanical marvels.
First time I have seen a "Knotter assembly" up close and had the operation explained. Good luck Bailing.

I think he’s eventually going to use half the old pole barn for cows and half for tractors and or equipment. Or maybe I misremembering. Half for cows and half for something.
@Bryan P. Allen The plan right now is to dedicate half the white barn for cows and half for storing round bales. Might put a lean-to roof on one side for equipment. But yes, I don't have enough space to store equipment under roof.
Like I said the other day, you're going to have to do a maintenance deep dive on your haybines sickle bar. now you've seen first hand what I saw in your mowing video. Actually - I don't mind that it's been 'left long'. You're going to get an excellent second cut, especially if you can mow your rows in the opposite direction. Besides, It's never good to "shave" a hay field. 😊

I had to replace the same pulley on my New Idea 402. I replaced the bearings inside the larger pulley as well, I just measured those and found a suitable replacement. We've replaced all the bearings that attach to the bars, those are a little pricey. I recal your drive assembly was welded up. Ours was wore down so bad it would skip with any amount of hay, so we welded it together last year just to get it going, this year I took it apart, put the cast piece in the wood furnace and welded it with stainless steel wire, then put it back in the furnace and let it burn out. I used a carbide deburing tool and shaped the teeth back on the part. Worked like a charm this year! Crazy how "cold" it was baling first cutting this year.
sure reminds me of the old days and wind rowing prairie grass in the sand hills in Nebraska.

Great first disassembly step with the blower. I would have liked to see you go one step further with your pressure washer - just cause I really like to see as much of the old iron as possible. Your a darned good mechanic. Very clever to find the second surface of the wire shear. That's what I really like about the old iron. With a common sense close inspection and a little critical thinking most everything from thiera and before can be repaired. Today - you've got a 'brain' to deal with before you ever get to the nuts, bolts gears and chains, sprockets, etc. If you're a new farmer, buy old iron.
Whoever taught you how to rake a taught you right
A+ for maintenance of hay baler but C- for having it clean a little bit. At least a water pressure wash on top of it. I understand it's an old machine AND that it's all steel made. But it's a great hay baler that needs a little TLC from my opinion. You're living a life that many people would like to live. At least, I am. Keep on your good job.
Clover it's self is a hard crop to cut, I'd slow ground speed down and change all sickel blade sections that will help alot

I'm wondering if the combination of cutting at a lower rpm and then, on the second field, moving up a gear, may have been too fast for the cutter to do a complete cut... maybe? 🤷♂

Most farmers in my region don’t do square baling anymore because there’s no need for small square bales of hay that’s why you see them round baling hay instead
I think your doing the right thing by leaving it lay another day, that looks to me like it did just what you said, pick up the uncut clover stems. It's hard for a haybine to cut heavy clover like you had a do a clean cut, if the blades gets dull or there's wetness int the field it can contribute to that issue. I hope you fixed your issue with the New Holland Hay liner baler, good luck with it. Have a good day!

I try to make 3 videos a week. But that usually doesnt happen, because the bigger projects take more time.
Put you some fertilizer on it Evan put about 200lbs to the acre and get pot ash mixed with it it will make the grass roots healthier and more nutritious for the animals
It may be a good idea to mow the field that didn't get cut well with the brush cutter or even the 0 turn mower. Get it growing even & less die back from crimping.
After your done bailing of course
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has stuff that breaks or wears out sitting over the winter. There's always that moment where you know you had all winter to fix something and now it's needed next week. That just means that piece of equipment is all of a sudden on the top of the ole "to do" list
Looks like you might want to adjust your haybine down closer to the ground. Clover is hard to get a clean cut on.
Looks like you could make a rack for the front tractor implements. It could be that the grapple and bucket go on the ground while things with forks or stabby bits get "hung up".

As with some comments on the mower ground speed , you want to make sure you rake it slow enough to not double turn it back to green hay on the bottom, I know it gets air but it just takes longer to dry and green spots in a bale are not good !! Nice job on all .😊
Give it a good power wash cleaning first.

A Hesston mower conditioner is not a Haybine. Only a New Holland is a Haybine. My first job as a partsman the main machine we sold was the

I’ve seen that happen before when the mower leaves hay. You definitely need some new knives, and maybe some new guards on that PT10.
I found with my haybine that if I drove too fast the blades didn't have enough time to cut and it pushed the hay over a bit. Not sure if you have the same issue or not. Best of luck.

Idea Evan: Rake the heavier cut hay first so it will dry better.
If you ever bale and it seems damp, get some bags of salt from the feed mill and scatter it on the rows as you stack it in the barn, sucks the moisture out. Also I know they cost alot but this winter you need to get you a disk mower when they are cheaper. Love your vids keep it up
have you ever used a haybine? asking because you sound familiar with disk mowers. I have used a haybine only on my dads farm. we still use it today but it is one of the bottlenecks of doing hay. it works great, it is just slow. what I am getting to is... if you have had both... is a disk mower a lot faster? I would think it would be but have never used one or seen one in operation. when I was a very young kid, we used a cutter bar. when my dad got a haybine, it was a huge improvement. we have been using it ever since. I always wonderd how a disk mower was...if it is as slow and do you ever have to worry about it getting clogged.
A disc mower won't clog . It will pretty much mow as fast as the ground allows, provided you have the mower sized to the tractor .
A discbine is the replacement for a haybine.
@@DanKlein_1 I never used one but had friends that had them and got a disc mower as soon as they could afford one.
You need to sharpen the sickle bar on the hay bind.
This brings back so many memories. We had that same baler and by the looks of the wagon, that was the same too. We ran a 4020 on the baler and an 8N on the wagon.
i baled last week , had 1 field about an acre and a half baled over 200 squares , never seen it so thick , my rake couldn't handle it , also had problems with my old 268 square baler , knotter was giving me fits , still dont know whats wrong with it , but a couple whacks with a hammer seemed to help , lmao

Never use water on the binder. When used its blank metal and will rust as hell

If it feels dry I always baled it and mowed it cut side up
If it's not cutting and the Sickles knives are good you need to replace guards and hold downs

Evan.... it looks like you cut the long field too fast with the hay bine.... when the grass is laded over like that it's caused by tractor speed over the ground.... when it's thick like that you must slow down alot to prevent that from happening.... that is my observation take it for what it is worth ! LOL
Might ought to clean your equipment BEFORE storing after the season
Not to be a know it all but haybine cutters need to be replaced or sharpened and settings may need adjustment
You are raking like your at the Indy 500
Couple things to suggest. The most important is that you simply CANNOT put equipment away without cleaning it off and greasing it so it is ready to go for the next season. This includes a going over and repair of what needs fixing. With your uncovered equipment, you simply cannot expect that you can hitch onto things and be ready to go on the day you need them. Haying is so time sensitive....it will save you a ton of grief if you do all these things in the Fall. Also, in your climate, you really should ted that hay at least once. You can do it gently and not ruin the clover. You should consider getting all "new" equipment. A four basket tedder to start. And then get rid of that wire tie baler....so much easier to use twine. And start mowing with a disc mower...so much nicer cut. Haying is stressful. You can't control the weather but you can control your stuff.
Mower you have is for hay.. drifting hay like clover and alfalfa lay on the ground when it gets tall normal mowing just got go slower let the head pick it up

That old Case needed some exercise just to keep it limbered up. Machines need to work out too!
Your speed was to fast on the thicker field. You were what we call pushing. It happens sometimes when we straight cut canola. I would slow up to where you see it feeding better. Farming isn't a hurry and get it done, it's a do it right the first time even if it takes longer.
Try some automatic transmission parts are bushings just need to find an old school mechanic or have someone machine a new one
