Lots of ink has been spilled about playing the diatonic arpeggios of the major scale, but in my time here on youtube I've seen scant little information for budding improvisers about the major 6 chord. If you're hip to Barry Harris' famous methodology, this sound is absolutely integral to his systems for improvisation. In this guide, I'm gonna teach you all about playing the major 6 chord on the guitar in as many different ways as I can.
We'll start out by playing the inversions of this chord as single notes, organized by groups of strings. Then, we'll talk about some different ways we can sequence these inversions in order to create unique patterns for improvised solos. Then, I'll show you how I like to practice this sound over the entire range of the guitar and how doing so is an incredible level up for your guitar technique. We'll also learn how to evoke the sound of drop three chords by playing arpeggios consisting of much wider intervals than you might typically play. Finally, we'll wrap things up by learning a short etude over a static Bbmaj7 chord so as to see how this sound plays over a major7 chord.

I will admit I would like a crash course on the theory behind the maj6 intervals before you show the examples. I want to understand what I’m working on thoroughly.

The chord is a maj6 not necessarily the intervals. Maj6 chord consists of 1-3-5-6 (major triad plus the 6th) and can be used to get the sound of maj9 when played over a major seventh chord from it's 5th. (I.e Bbmaj7, play F6 gives you Bbmaj9 sound). It also works over other chords giving different extensions. Hope that helps!

Every M6 chord is an inversion of a m7. C6 has the same notes as Am7 and the arpeggio fingerings are interchangeable. If you know one then you already know the other.

Very true. Major6 is a very useful way of getting up structure sounds on other chords than it's relative as well.

constructive criticism here... a visual of the arpeggios would be so much more useful than the tab. ON top of that, your tab is down at the bottom, if the video is paused its hard to read with the pause line. I love 6th arpeggios, and lines made using those more like mini scales.

I don't understand what you want exactly? What kind of visual do you need beyond TAB and notation. Also, TAB is down at the bottom for a clean visual. If you need an easier time reading you know where to find those PDFs haha 😄 thanks for watching!

@@dsg_studio It's hard when you've put work into creating a great video to have people seemingly nit-picking over detail . It's a bit of a buyers market on YT because it's flooded with high quality guitar pedagogy . What the OP means is that when you pause a video then it can be hard to read the tab because other graphics get overlaid . It's a legitimate point & it is constructive tbf . After all - you've put all the work into getting that tab on screen only for it to be obfuscated when people try to read it . Certainly goes on the first-world problem list !

@DrTWG gotcha! I was confused by the request for a different visual other than the tab. Not sure what that would look like which is why I wanted some clarification. I could play around with the placement of the tab but I'd rather not sacrifice the cleanliness of the presentation. You're right in that these take a lot of work to put together haha. Thanks!
