The Chinese Fuseki involves setting up a pincer and trying to get your opponent to step into it. From there we attack for profit; key word 'attack'. As a result it's expected that some fighting occurs... Just a little... barely noticeable.
Best Go series EVER!!!!! Thank you.
Learned a LOT from this video. I'm excited about this new phase of the Basics series!
as usual very helpful and educational. will definitely experiment with it
"Do not do this" - sounds tempting enought to try :D
Where do you get those 3 kyu players who play like DDK? Seriously!
25:00 its not seki, when white is dying on the outside ;D
Not that I will complain given anything basic is nice to see, but Sanrensei would be great given handicap games (to use properly) and how to exploit it when it is used against you.
will be going over all the fuseki, including sanrensei
Does that include the Go Seigen Sanrensei's with tengen? I bet it doesn't :p
00:29: Wtf?
I refuse to believe it's usefull for kyu players to learn fuseki (of course they can play fuseki, I'm talking about explicitly studying fuseki). In fact, most kyu players (me included) already spend way too much time worriying about the opening, where usually only a small advantage is obtained (that's unless you're trying to play trick joseki), that advantage being mostly irrelevant for the outcome of the game due to the vast amounts of severe mistakes that will be made by both sides.
Well, i really want to just focus on avoid the common traps of a fuseki, like my opponent here who approached the pincer low. It's crazy how often a game can be lost early on cause of a simple 'trick' in the opening.
Maybe this way can throw some of those opening worries out the window and focus on other things~
This video isn't explaining any standard fuseki variations, so the above isn't criticism. I just hope 10k players won't jump to "the 100 most important chinese variations" right after this video. Those "tricks" in the opening would be complicated trick joseki though, where one side has to die horribly to decide a game. Something like playing a low approach into a chinese formation isn't nearly enough to decide the game at this level (I would even argue, not enough to significantly influence the winning statistics of players at this level). Also ``irony marker`` alpha go plays 3-4 facing the opponent --> it's officially allowed now.
about low approach to pincer thing. when your oppenent does it, you kick and extend and get territory. whilst your oppenent makes an over-concentrated unsettled group. Saying this wouldn't affect winning statistics is nothing less than saying 3 stones handicap wouldn't affect statistics(That is for above 7-8k.I would definitely agree on that for 15k and below players). It would greatly affect it.
About facing your oppenent with 3-4 thing. Playing the best move without understanding it is pretty much useless. More so if you actually think that the move is actually bad. If you watched Redmond's Alphago reviews you would know it too. He said it many times that he isn't using the early 3-3 invasions because he doesn't understand it and it actually looks bad to him. We theorically think facing your oppenent with 3-4 stone is bad. You may or may not know the reasons but you are not advised to use it unless you comprehend why our theories about that are bad. That being said in the opening there are just very few things that are completely not allowed as we don't know it very well. I even saw a 9p on database who play mostly 5-5 and 5-4 stones in the opening.
So overall I think fuseki included basic videos are very informative and I would like to see more of them.
Jack Warren I'd be interested in the statistics of this. If you're in that range (1-6k or so? I'm 2-3k on ogs.) we could play like 200 games, 100 starting from the chinese low approach and 100 normal ones, see if there's a real difference. If I'm not mistaken statistics says I win "the wager" if the difference is less than 5 ;)
Also the alpha go comment was MARKED as irony. That said, I think early 3-3 invasions are a lot harder to pull off than 3-4 facing opponent. Also clearly both of these ideas aren't anywhere nearly as terrible as low approach into chinese fuseki. That 3-4 is basically inviting the opponent to approach instead of making an enclosure or a framework and would usually be followed up with a fighty-type game plan, not letting the opponent build. (Don't ask me why alphago doesn't use that 3-4 like that :D )
I do accept your challenge but I won't play on OGS as I don't like it. If you wanna do the experiment on tygem or kgs that would be ok for me.
I was unable to appreciate his voice, and so was not able to watch the video.
my content isnt for everyone~
