    I'm autistic... but also a mechanical engineer. I am an iron ring member, it's the hippocratic oath for engineers. I have a BSME, and work as a lean process engineer and quality engineer. I design CMM inspection programs for CNC machined widgets in the industrial, aeronautical and space industries. I am one of the engineers that ensure vendor quality for turbine systems that go into power plants and offshore oil rigs, to make sure we never have an incident like deepwater horizon. Want this to be an example, we are not less.

      I think some of these neurotypicals confuse vaccine injuries that mimic characteristics of autism, and autism itself.
      One of the greatest differences is in levels of empathy and intelligence.
      For vaccine injuries, there's none of that heightened sensutivity or high level intelligence. They actually regress in those areas.
      For autistics, we're highly empathic, esp the girls and have high levels of specialized intelligence. Ours is a difference in neurology, and us actually nature's way of evolving this very stuck in it's ways homo sapien species.
      Stay awesome, Alex. ❤

    75 now, I have slowly with a great deal of help, learned to pass as 'normal' much of the time. Not 'cured', but developed in skills which allow me to understand how my oddly wired brain works, and how to manage and appreciate its differences.

    For those reading this, please be aware that there is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of ABA for autistic children. ABA can lead autistic people to hide their sensory or other needs in favour of forcing them to conform to the neurotypical world, and long-term can lead to PTSD and worse. ABA doesn't allow sensory supports, such as earplugs/ear defenders, sunglasses, fidget toys, chewies. It refuses to allow stimming, even if it's not harmful - something autistic people (and others with sensory needs, and even neurotypicals under enough stress) so to self-soothe in anxiety-inducing or scary situations (or when super excited!).
    Am I saying families shouldn't receive funds for help? Far from it! But I want people to at least question what ABA is, and whether it's the best thing for the young person.

      Thank you❣️I was looking for other opinions on here as I’ve also heard from other autistics about this. It’s sad that it’s like this. I mean I think many parents are just trying to help their kids and don’t know better/other option or can’t afford. But I can see this. I wasn’t diagnosed with autism as a kid but also ended up getting my hearing tested (no hearing issues). They didn’t know what I had because I was verbal, though barely talked in group settings. Anyhow, all that to say, it makes sense what you’re saying. It is exhausting to try to act neurotypical/fit in. This is essentially like learning to act like a character 😩 lol.

    My son is 5 with autism and started kindergarten this year (2023-2024) they put him in a “regular” class and I’ve been a nervous wreck the whole time. He’s not able to speak full sentences, and if you don’t know him it’s har to understand him. He’s very smart and his teacher loves him. There was a autism center that opened up in our town that he went to for a couple months and ended up graduating. I always find myself worrying and thinking of the worst outcome and really I don’t know why I do. I stress myself out thinking about it to much. But so far he has done great with a little accidents here and there. My boy continues to surprise and impress me every day. When he was 2-3 years old he was a lot like ava! Before he was born I never really knew what autism was. My son is a blessing and really made me step back and look at life and what I need to do to help him. The teachers told my parents to take me to speech therapy and to have me test for autism but never did because there were in denial about it and it was taboo/ shameful for them. The only reason I found out about autism is when I saw a movie and than looked up what autism was about and I related to it so much. When I asked my mom if anyone mentioned it she than told me about this revelation.

When I was 5, I learnd things extremely fast. I not only learnd to speak, but also to read, to write, to play a recorder (flute) and simple music sheets. At 6 I learnd to play organ.
      I started to speak when I was 5, but - although I didn't speak very well, poor vocabulary - I tried to learn German. At 11 I tried to learn Russian and English (English is not my mother tongue, Dutch is).
      Now I am 56 years old. I can manage a lot of things, I can drive a car. Driving in a very big city like Brussels, Amsterdam or Berlin is not a problem at all. When I am at the hotel, I am not even exhausted. I can think very fast; I can likely multitask pretty well, actually in the same way a computer does (to switch thoughts several times a second). I managed to drive a car, to use navigation and to chat with a passenger.
      Unfortunately, at work my qualities are denied. I am just an autistic and my boss diagnosed me with a learning disorder, which is a lie. Someone with a learning disorder can't learn languages, can't learn driving and make intellectual progresses.

    Ava. Autism is not a disease. What people call aggression could be overstimulation. ABA is a bit bad and stops you from stimming which is a what of expression. Of course do not hurt people when you do it but just because you’re a little different doesn’t mean you need a cure. Autism doesn’t have a cure. Autism is not a “ significant disordered condition”. Autistic people ( most of the time) have high levels of creativity, truthfulness, and empathy. Of course autism is a spectrum, you can have a stereotype for autistic people, a nonverbal white boy with low empathy. but you can also have autistic people that are very smart ,very verbal, and very empathetic. My point is the media has had such a bad rap and the examples of autistic people in this video give autism a bad rap. Be yourself kid!

    To anyone with autistic children or similar, look for help or suggestions from other autistic people or people who genuinly want good for your kids. Internet forums like r/autism and youtube channels from autistic people can be a great start

    • @nahtanaught

      Yeah, like Reddit knows how to treat autistic children better than professional psychiatrists😂😂
      ABA is fine. It teaches autistic children pro-social behaviors like speech therapy.
      It may fight against what the autistic children’s brain naturally wants them to do, but that’s the point.
      Think of it like a schizophrenic. Their brain may be telling them to do certain things, very bad things more often than not. But therapy, even if they don’t like it, will in the end help them come out better and stronger.

    • @kaylaa1841
      @kaylaa1841 Před 6 měsíci

      We found our play based ABA through a man who was nonverbal until he entered ABA at like 5. It’s basically a preschool but with people trained to help kids learn to communicate and identify the root cause of behavior so that they can either find ways to avoid it or help them replace it with something that isn’t dangerous. It’s pretty much like any practice in the way that you have to really do your homework so you don’t end up with a quack or worse. A lot of the tactics used in the earliest stages of ABA were used by the mental health field as a whole unfortunately. I think it took like a month for my son to truly realize his RBT was not just a friend 😂

    • @BoldWarrior78
      @BoldWarrior78 Před měsícem +2

      Well said! Yes, ABA therapy is, in most cases, not good for autistic children as some practitioners force them to supress their autistic traits (and therfore their authentic identity) and display allistic ones. (I prefer using the term 'allistic' rather than 'neurotypical' as not all non-autistic people are neurotypical and I think 'allistic' is less judgmental) Also, I'm autistic, am certified as a Life Coach (no ableism intended in my saying this) who specialises in guiding autistic adults, children, and their allistic allies into fortifying their lives. One of my clients - an autistic child and his allistic Mum - told me recently how blessed they feel to have me in their lives and on their side with their challenges. Also again, as of 2nd December 2024, I'll be uploading videos in relation to autism and allism to a new CZcams channel (with trailers coming beforehand) so do keep on the lookout for those if you're autistic, an allistic parent (or even an autistic one) of an autistic child, or you're of either neurotype and you want to learn more.

    As a man living with it, higher on the spectrum, too much stimuli coming in is the hard one and not a soul gets it. I have learned to deal with it being on the spectrum and just going forward always. It is hard but can be done, for any that are that need that advice. I hate to compare myself to veterans but autism is a lot like that, you just hear and see and smell everything. Your senses are on overdrive all of the time and learning to tame them is the key and why a lot of what PTSD veterans may learn a lot from people on the spectrum.

    • @reeeyou
      @reeeyou Před rokem +9

      I’ve learnt that from Carly Fleischmann, where in one video interview (she couldnt talk but typed out her answer), she explained to the audience what the stimuli were like, and also why autistic people tend to have stims. I was actually mind blown because her explaination was simple; stims are a form of output to cancel out or reduce input of stimuli in order to help her focus. Like how people twirl their hair, fiddle their thumbs or subconsciously do something “weird” when talking to others or on the phone, or when they are focussing on something. Just that the “stims” autistic people are looked upon as “inappropriate”.

    My brother M17 and I F19 both have autism, though I have ‘high functioning’ autism while my brother is non verbal. He was diagnosed at like 3 or 4, and I was diagnosed at 13 when I ran away from home.
    Now that he’s taller than both my parents, my dad finds it difficult to care for him. He’s reliant on my dad, but when he’s frustrated he can’t communicate that frustration or pain in word, so he has to resort to violence to have his needs met.
    I have to admit, we are not a family that is fit to care for him because whenever he is hitting himself or hitting us, we just give him painkiller medicine, hide, and wait for him to calm down.
    It’s really heartbreaking to hear him cry and then to hear my dad shout at him “being firm” and watch my mum or sisters get hurt.
    When he’s not crying or hitting anyone, he’s so happy and bright. I’ll never take his radiant sunshine energy for granted.
    POV: you come home from a hard day of school/work to see him smiling at you and playing with you, making his loud happy noises. I don’t ever want that to end.
    I hope we find out what’s causing him so much pain, because I can’t take it anymore. 😢

      @@RayD654 I can't stress this enough, please listen to me!
      Interact with you son AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! It's important to teach him to be independent while he's still young. My brother is turning 18 now and can't do anything himself, but if we taught him when he was younger, he would at least be able to change his own clothes, eat himself, and clean himself after going toilet.
      But sadly, my dad didn't stay home with him much when he was younger and my mum had to look after all of us then, alone. It was hard for her and even harder to find the time and energy to try and teach my brother how to be self sufficient. She begged my dad but all he wanted to do was play cricket and fly around the world. He lies that he was home for our childhood and claims that he raised us, even though he wasn't even present when any of us were born.
      I'm also trying to use PECS or cartoon velcro pictures to communicate with him. It's difficult since we're late, but he's slowly getting better I think. I would give anything for my brother to be able to somehow tell us where he's hurting or what he wants.
      Try PECS with your son. This means that if he doesn't end up learning to speak which is fine, you'll still have an efficient way of communicating with him. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE MY DAD DID!
      He's actually in his home country right now and I'm sleeping on the floor in my brother's room because he's so used to my dad sleeping next to him. I've been in this flat sleeping bag for 4 weeks! He's happy most days, but last night he got upset and was hitting himself and he couldn't tell me why. We just had to ASSME he was in pain and gave him medicine. Then, for my own safety, I had to sleep with my mum for one night. I'm sleeping in back in his room again today, and he's finally fast alseep and snoring away.
      Goodnight to you and your sons 😊

Which did take yrs of waiting, due to the waiting list but support from local council and his school helped to move him to a school for autistic children where its benefited him a lot. He's 10yrs old and still has his behaviours, but he is able to function an grow in an environment where it's better suited to his needs. She is a social butterfly and has so many friends and the best part is she has the same teacher she had last year who took her from a confused kid to an inquisitive one.
      Finding a good school for an autistic child is priceless.

    Autism isn't an emotional disturbance, it's a difference in how the brain processes stimulation. Furthermore, ABA is abusive. I applaud this mother and Ava for their work and what they were able to accomplish but this story was very poorly researched and it's obvious no one from the disability or Autistic community was consulted.

    • @BoldWarrior78
      @BoldWarrior78 Před měsícem +1

      Your first sentence is spot-on. Also, ABA therapy, in some cases isn't as bad as what it used to be. However, the truth is, that it's still mostly not good and no autistic child or adult actually needs ABA. What they need is acceptance, understanding, love, patience, adjustments to their environments if possible or a change of environment, and to have their needs met. This results in happy and healthy people all round.

    Most (about 70%) of autistic people who have gone through ABA have symptoms of PTSD from ABA therapy. It’s very important that people are cautious and make sure that the therapy is not traumatizing to the child. If done poorly it can do great harm! Forced reduction of autistic behaviors is also associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety.
    Also, a survey showed the vast majority of autistic people who have gone through ABA are against ABA.

      The ABA of 15-20+ years ago in some cases, yes. We're hearing from adults who went through a very different type of ABA than what is used now. Painting all of ABA with an outdated and negative brush isn't helping families who need support discern good clinics from subpar ones; its simply scaring them out of getting therapeutic support at all. Please stop, or at least provide constructive criticism that is more nuanced and relevant. Thank you, from an Autistic professional mama of 3, who is also a former ABA therapist (now primarily play therapist and educator).

      Exactly! It angers me all the bigoted ableist comments on this video! They are all encouraging herb cures for autism praising the normalization of Autism! It makes me sick to my stomach to see that people are still this ignorant and outdated! They are still trying to erase autism and get rid of us and turn us into boring hateful neurotypicals instead of the unique creative gifted people we are! By removing autism and normalizing us, they are also making us average and stupid and taking away our super intelligence, our ability to think literally, and our ability to think in a loving childlike manner. It’s disgusting! The neurodiversity movement is trying so hard to shut down ABA and Autism $peaks and Autism Research but we keep getting silenced by those who hate autism and view it as a tragedy. We understand the challenges of autism and of course we agree with treating it but we want people to embrace the good parts of autism. The light side of autism is where the gifts and talents are but no people want us to be normal and boring and take away what makes us special. Worst part is that many in the neurodivergent community were brainwashed by ABA into believing their autism is bad and they try to shut us down. We must continue to fight for autism rights. If autism get removed, all the intelligent people of the world disappear along with it. Without autistic people, this world would be destroyed. We can figure things out much better than a neurotypical can. These evil people want to destroy us and they praise ABA and a cure for autism. It makes me sick. Absolutely sick.

      It's fair to say autistic people think differently than allistic (neurotypical) people. The theory of monotropism is a relative new way of looking at autism that helps explain some of the differences in the way autistic people think. In short, the tendency to focus completely on one thing at a time can seem like a superpower to non-autistic people but it can be a two-edged sword.

    The waiting list for ABA therapy is so long, and access to care in terms of transit is so terribly difficult. We absolutely need to see these changes. Every day, I see another case of these beautiful, brilliant children being harmed or abandoned, and it’s wholly heartbreaking. What can we do besides writing our legislators? So much gratitude to all who help provide a springboard forward to student-centered learning; the necessity for access to all is paramount.
