My Current CRT Setup

My current CRT Setup consisting of 3 Toshibas. A 20AF44 up top, a 27AF44 bottom right and a 27A44 (the round tube) on the bottom left.
They are running off a MiSTer fpga with component out as well as a Hombrewed Wii, also through component video. I am just waiting on the component switcher. Component video is more than good enough for me!
Using a 1980's Technics SA-626 to drive sound through some Wharfdale Diamond 220's.
I built the upper shelf and the larger bottom shelf sitting on a used CRT corner stand that I painted white.
Total cost of all 3 CRT TVs: $70 with one being free. They really do look incredible in person and I am not going any further down the crt rabbit hole. I don't need PVMs, BVMs or even Trinitrons. I am totally happy with this setup!
I dismantled couple of CRT TVs and I'm really stunned how advanced and sophisticated are CRT TVs inside. Copper very accurately wrapped coils in monitor. CRTs are rich in coloured precious metals.
Not really rich in color though. May I suggest OLED?
@chocograph The tv at the first few seconds of the video is a Samsung sn95b qdoled. The crt are very rich in color with contrast that rivals oled. You just have to see it in person. The camera does not pick it up.
@phobos2k2 At least not with my luck, out of the 50 or so CRT's I've collected, the closest one that rivaled oled was a Sony KV-35XBR48 and while it did get quite colorful and bright, the color contrast couldn't quite match oled. While OLED does seem to have a higher color contrast than CRT, the one thing it fails at is the accuracy of color tones, which are noticeably fake compared to them on a CRT. The easiest example of this is seeing human skin from real people while on oled they look orangeish, but whenever it comes to cartoons and nature 4k videos, they can definitely take advantage of that, but if you compare them next to a CRT, you can still see that the colors don't quite blend in like they can on a CRT and you can see them layered on top on another on oled due to how digital technology works (they could fix all this later on, but who knows). Lastly, if you can put up with all that and want to go all in for color even though it doesn't blend in like how a professional artist can blend colors, then go for it, if not keep going with your CRT my friend!
@@oledevo CRT's last way longer than cheap OLED televisions. They are rich in colors if you get a newer crt
@@blazuma111 you have to remember that these TVs are at least 20 years old, the fact that they run at all is a miracle
If you can get your hands on one new old stock then you're in for a good time, a fresh tube can look on par with OLED.
OLED tvs looks very nice right now cuz they're brand new.
Nice, our house is full of crts and no flatscreens, my family and I love crt's and they still work. We use them for watching DVD/VHS tapes, and using our old game consoles. We also have a sattelite box. Our main tv is a HD trinitron

As beautiful as those 2 big ones are, the little one above is just so aesthetically pleasing right next to those white speakers, it just looks "cute", I love big CRTs (I have two 36" ones) but there's something special about little ones like that too, specially when they have great picture quality.
Agreed. The little guy is a great set. I didn't specifically look for it--it just came with the 27a44. When I saw it, I knew I couldn't let it go. So I literally built the shelf just for it to live on. Thanks for watching!

Dude! Amazing set up! It is hard to record CRT footage but you did a nice job here! I love the sega action! Amazing sound set up as well dude.
I imagine you have already checked for this, but make sure those speakers are Magnetically shielded if you have them that close to the CRTs. They can damage the color and eventually the screen will have a warped image.
27A43 definitely a (Holy Grail) in my CRT collection I have the exact CRT. I have 5 CRT 4 of them are the high-end Sony's 27FV310, 36FV300, 13fs100, and 20FS120. I absolutely love curved glass black picture tube 3 line digital comb and this CRT does not have a scan velocity Modulation. Make sure you disable them on your AF models just Google disable SVM. 27A43 is almost as good as a d-series JVC in my opinion I love curved glass too many high end Sony's are flat panels with horrible geometry issues. Yo, how does your 27A43 compare to your 27FV310? Which one do you like better? Or how does it compare to any other curved tubes CRTs you may have?
@shredbraahh8606 it all depends on what you're looking for in a CRT. A42 is an Orion tube different scanlines curved glass. FV310 aperture grill flat glass thin dark scanlines lines voltage regulator. I have a lot of CRTs I made this post over a year ago I'm up to 13 right now haha 😆 if you can get your hands on both go for it but I ain't going to compare both and say one's better than the other to be honest both of them have been unplugged for a good 6 months currently gaming on my PVM and JVC D-series. I would say I prefer pixel art games on the A42 so NES,SNES, Genesis and fighting games.FV310 6th generation games so PlayStation 2 Gamecube SNES also looks great too😅
@@shredbraahh8606also a JVC d-series has more of a bubble curved glass over A43 the bigger the screen the bigger the bubble too A43 is 27-in the d-series I'm currently gaming on as a 32 and I also had a 36 which I just recently got rid of it was a Toshiba tube I kept the Panasonic tube 32-in JVC CRTs D-series have different manufacturer tubes but that's another rabbit hole😅
@@darionovello6886 for sure, I hear you. Epic collection haha. I currently have a 20" FV300 and it's overall good, but I want more of a scanline look for the older stuff. Also the flat tube just doesn't look right to me at all, from a nostalgic standpoint. I thought I would absolutely love this TV, but ehh.. lol. Also the convergence is pretty off, so it's kind of killing it a bit for me. I'm picking up a 27A44 tomorrow (super stoked) and I have a feeling I'm going to love it. Done a decent amount of research, and this seems like the set for me. And I saw some stills and video of the exact CRT I'm buying, and the scanlines look amazing. I have a feeling I'll even prefer it for 480i content but we'll see. Maybe I would feel differently if I grew up with a flat CRT, but man, nostalgic is powerful haha. I'm specifically looking for a 27" curved tube, and need to have component, as well as S-Video and composite. If you have any other CRT suggestions based on what I said, feel free to let me know. I had an AF at one point but being a 24", didn't fit with my setup.
By the looks of it, your AF has punchier colors but I'll wager your A set is sharper.
Good eye! You are exactly right. The A does have a sharper image that really looks good to my eyes on 8 and 16 bit games. You can really see "scan lines" which I prefer for those games. The AF is also punchier as you said and really comes into it's own on 3d systems from GameCube and up. I read somewhere that it has some kind of "scan velocity modulation" that can be disabled by simply disconnecting a wiring harness inside the set. I may try it to see how the picture clarity is affected. Overall I'm enjoying the sets quite a bit!
@@phobos2k2 I went through the exact same feeling as the way my setup is currently, I have 3 CRTs each with their own specific uses. 2 are HD sets but I really wanted a nice SD set for retrogaming. I picked up a free 32" FS120 which I found looked great and had really nice colors. But then I had the opportunity to get a 32" FV310 and had to find out for myself if the hype was real for that model. True enough, the scanlines were much more defined on the 310 though it noticeably wasn't as colorful as the 120. So, as my setup did not have room for 4 tubes, I had to make a choice and gave away the 120. Like you, the sharper image won me over but if I ever get rid of one of my HD sets, I'm inclined to check out a Toshiba A set or possibly a JVC D-Series but I think the A will win between the two in my eyes.
Hey, amazing collection. I just would like to double check if you don't mind. I'm about to pick up a 27A44, and I am planning on using it with the HD Retrovision Genesis component cables. Do you know if those cables for sure work with this TV? I'm only asking because I just discovered they do not work with one of my Panasonic CRTs. There is a wobble effect that is caused by an RGB sync issue with the particular TV. Anyway, have you by any chance tried the HD Retrovision cables and do they work? Thanks in advance.
@shredbraahh8606 Yes. I use the HD retrovision cables with the adapter for my model one Genesis without issues.
My crt setup isn’t ideal but works for me. I have a 9 cube storage thing I use for my consoles and on top is a sharp 2003 crt tv. It only has rf and composite but I’m happy with it. I do plan on getting a crt tv that accepts component or a crt monitor that has vga but I can’t find any in my area

I've got the Toshiba 20af43. It's pretty sweet. Would love the 24" version just a tad more. 27" is a lil too big for my use
My brother now has the Toshiba. There is a Wega kv 24fs120 in my area. I'm so tempted lol. Almost never see these in my area so I always try and pick up
That's super cool but where did you get those shelves I'm trying to get shelves for a 1980 20' Philips RC5 (it weight 25 kilos) and it's hard to me find something that support that weight
I made the shelves from birch plywood. One sheet did both shelves. Some 1x3 boards screwed to the studs support the weight. Bottom is a tv stand from fb marketplace that I painted white.
Sweet setup. I found a cheap Toshiba 14AF44 but it didn’t come with a remote. I purchased an original CT-847 remote for this TV but can’t seem to figure out how to reprogram and get it to connect with the Toshiba. Any insight on how to reprogram these kinds of remotes? Much appreciated!
Thank you. I purchased a used CT-847 and it worked on all the TVs right away. I didn't have to program anything. Does your remote do anything to the TV or does it not work at all?
@@phobos2k2 I appreciate the response. I have bought two different CT-847 remotes and neither were able to connect to my Toshiba. I made sure the IR sensor was working on the remotes (even though it was a faint signal) and still had no luck. I won’t power it on or anything. I opened it up and cleaned the contacts but that didn’t work either. I really like the TV so I’m trying not to give up and buy another one since all I need to do is change the input.

Nice. Do those Toshiba's have Toshiba tubes in them or do they have Orion tubes? I think most 27 inch models have Orion tubes.
If i was you I would hook my Wii up to one tv and my MiSTer up to another....not sure what to do with the 20 incher. Maybe hook it up to a computer for a second monitor to play music off or something.
It's really not hard to record CRTs but it does take more effort than a hope and a prayer. Basically you have to mess with the focus, iso, frame rate, exposure, lighting and brightness. Dark images are easier. An hour or two of experimentation will yield results, or you could watch one of my tutorial vids.
I haven't investigated. I assumed they were Orion tubes. Not really sure if the curved 27a44 is Orion also. I did end up doing what you said. The splitter I was using was amplified and caused issues with the 27a44. I had to join a fb crt group to figure it out lol. I find the Wii puts out a less crisp picture than the MiSter. But it's still pretty cool at the end of the day!
@@phobos2k2 The wii is cool. The 480i looks really good on my Trinitrons. At least the games that were made for 480i. The old wii arcade emulation games that are upscale to 480i look terrible.
Might want to shine a flashlight in there and see if you can read the badge on the tubes. Toshiba made excellent tubes but sometimes they would put middle of the road tubes made by Orion in models that are under 32 inches.
@@riggel8804 I looked. The 20" is an Orion. The 27af44 says LG.Philips. The 27a44 doesn't have a sticker that I can see.
@@phobos2k2 Makes sense. You might want to keep your eye out for a 32 inch Toshiba if it pops up. Those all have Toshiba tubes in them. I have heard good things about the Philips tubes but I never seen one in person.
