Hi I'm 17 and I have ptsd. I just wanted to let you know that this video helped me make what I call a grounding activity box. I disassociate when I have an episode and what helps keep that from happening is feeling and sensing physical things. I got the bags of sand to hold and I made a small zen garden as a simple diy/decor peice for my room and in my bin have different Tupperware with pom poms, sequins, the twisty present bows for a crackle sound, a small washcloth that I soaked in my fabric softener and raised for the smell, I got a small stuffed bear and replaced the fluff with rice, and I made a few stress balls with flour and balloons. All of these things are really good for stress, anxiety, numb feelings(depression), and of course grounding exercises. I really hope this helps someone and it would be a great video for sure!
as an autistic adult, i think i’d cry if i felt or even saw an eraser and dry rice in the same container. i love both textures, but be mindful of the recipient of the sensory bin; mixing things can be stressful for some, and for some people it might be a good idea to get a bin with dividers so certain things won’t touch. as your kid explores more, they will find which objects they like together and want separated, which would be a great learning experience for parents
I’m going to put different grains in mine separated out a little bit there’s not going to be erasers and stuff hidden in mine one of the kids I teach is autistic
I am 11, but i have two sisters, one is two and the other is three. I think im going to make this! I might buy cool stuff for them to play with! You help me choose what to do with my sisters! Thanks!
I have a 3yo and 2yo. My 3yo is so busy. I mean he is non stop from the time he wakes up until he goes to sleep. He is also very curious. He likes to play with things that aren't toys. Like eggs, flour, water and things like that. I'm pretty sure he has ADHD. It's hard to keep him entertained. If I don't watch him he'll get into everything and make huge messes. But he loves to know how things work. He loves to work with his hands. He's just like his dad. Last night he got fixated on flour. He wanted to play with it so bad. So this morning I got a bin and filled it up and gave him his little construction trucks. The smile on his face was the best thing ever. He loves playing in the sink too. I've been wanting to do these for a while. But haven't because I'll try do activities with him and it always turns out with a huge mess and he doesn't listen. But this way he's able to have the freedom he wants. So I'm definitely going to start making these for my toddlers. Hopefully it'll help them get out the urge to make a mess and hopefully give me a break to be able to clean without stopping every 2 seconds. I'm also poor so this video was awesome. Thank you
Omg I was just telling my boyfriend this! NYC dollar trees look sadddd!! They don’t have half the stuff the dollar tree in this video has! Lol I’m about to travel out of NYC for dollar tree 🤣
I love this video! My 3 year old son was recently diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and he has been receiving occupational therapy for his fine motor skills. They were using sensory bins and his OT suggested making some at home. This gave me so many fun ideas for my little guy!
I had my niece over today. She is about 1 1/2 and I made her a quick sensory bin today. I used dry pasta and gave her a spoon and measuring cups. She sat and played 30 minutes without getting up. I was right with her for the few times she thought about eating a dry macaroni, but it was a lot of fun. She is kind of little but I think with supervision its a fun activity we will do again.
Elizabeth Ritter I have to supervise the kids in my Sunday school class especially if the twins or there they will be 2 in July and one that is 4 with autism, I will supervise them all because you never know about kids I will have 5 if they are all there. The other kids are a 3 and 5 year old.
For someone older, like my age, 17. I’m also concerned with esthetics and matching my room decor. I’ve made a cute little one out of a smushed fishbowl glass style bowl with white sand and black river rocks and clear gems and a ceramic turtle. It’s a great alternative that I can set out on my desk for decor and a relief break while working on homework
I work in OT pediatrics and I made a sensory bin out of fall leaf bouquets, pine cones, pumpkins, and squash. All items from the dollar tree! The kids took apart the bouquet leaves and put them back together. They used tongs to find the pine cones and squash. We even throw the leaves in the air for eye tracking and to work on balance. We sprinkled leaves into the bucket and used the branches to mix up the items as extensions of our hands. My kids that enjoy tickles loved using the branches to tickle each other. I love your ideas and have shared your video with my clients families.
Thank u for saving my life!!! My son has been driving me crazy & he is 19months & I didn't knw what to do with him. Now I knw!!! Thanks a million!!! 👍🏻😁
My 4-year-old fraternal twin daughters have Global Developmental Delay and Sensory Processing Disorder due to a rare chromosome disorder (they're also being tested for ASD in May). I've been wanting to make sensory bins for them, but I have been so overwhelmed with all of the options and had no idea where to start. After watching your video, I went to the Dollar Tree today and bought enough to make five different bins for them! The Dollar Tree in our town looks smaller than the one you went to, so they didn't have everything, but I think we're off to a great start. Thank you so much for making this video!
Oh wow! I just loved reading this, thank you so much for commenting. I think it is great that you jumped in and started to explore. You are such a great mama. Have fun with it and take your time. Let me know how it goes.
I teach a kid with medium functioning autism I try to have a sensory activity Sunday our sensory activity was playdough this week is food mostly different grains sensory bin raw foods
Great video! I used your idea for a pasta sensory bin and my girls loved it. I colored the dry penne pasta and gave them pipe cleaners so they could string them on and make bracelets. It was a hit :) BTW, your Dollar Tree is beautifully stocked! The one near us is pretty basic.
My son loves yarn/string/shoe laces, so I love the thought of this...except he likes to chew it. Any ideas on how to make it a success, rather than a meal? He has no interest in chewing his chewy necklace, so I'm not able to use that option as an alternative while he plays.
This is amazing, thank you! I have two kids who would love this and having a video that breaks it down into categories and examples makes it so much easier. I'm excited to run out to dollar tree and make their first box.
Yeah the ones by me are all gross tbh. Idk if its just the few ive been to or what but they literally never clean and all their shelves are never stocked and their products are everywhere
I teach preschoolers in Sunday school and I’m going to do a sensory bin with different grains for kids to pour in cups and weigh. I already have oatmeal and a few beans and I’m going to get more I’m going to get rice, popcorn, lentils, barley a wheat shaft probably have to get artificial wheat maybe a muffin pan to fill if they have them at dollar tree. I got old fashioned oats too. I’m going to put a baggy full of each item where I will have room for several things. I’m going to let them get grain in cups and weigh the items maybe and pour it back in. I’m going to put mine on a table cover for easer clean up. Maybe some noodles too that’s a good idea
The Purple Alphabet I couldn’t find barley and wheat. I have beans, oatmeal, rice, popcorn, lentils, and noodles measuring cups and plastic cups to go in the sensory bin
You are going to get me into "trouble". 😂😂😂 Great video and great ideas. I will be visiting to get that dish pan. I've don't the popcorn kernels for a farm themed sensory bin. Thinking of using the aquarium gravel DT has for a space theme. It looks black in color. This shall be fun! Thanks for the motivation and ideas! ❤
Oh I like your ideas, especially the space theme!!! Are you on instagram?? If you are, make sure to tag me cause I would love to see your activities when you do them.
I have a bean sensory bin. I have done rice before but beans sweep up easier. I lay down a tablecloth in the kitchen and then the toddler play while I homeschool. I usually pull it out when I'm deperate and it tends to keep them occupied for so long. I have a measuring cup, medicine cups, shells, big buttons,a rock, soldier guys and a little spoon from a kitchen set. I like your suggestion to change it up with themes. Fabulous! Also, totally going to do a water one!
We love Sensory Bins. I've put pine cones, sticks and acorns we found at the park in our fall bin. I put Cloud Dough in our winter bins with winter animals. I love your ideas. I need to get a few items for my February bin. Doing white rice and letter magnets this week.
I love this video, and the Dollar tree store I live in Canada and unfortunately the store I use to go is not well stock. Can't find all these things.. Thanks for the tips..
This video was very enjoyable. You have some great ideas. I was concerned that many of the items you suggested would be choking hazards. I have seen shaving cream being played with. I was just concerned about the little ones getting it in their eyes. Thank you for your helpful tips!
HAHA - I like that title... I should have used that. They really like the feathers too. The other day they were dropping on down the balcony to watch it float down.
I have been binging on your videos. I'm planning to homeschool my 14 month old baby and even though I am a preschool teacher I run out off ideas. THANK YOU!!!!
I never thought to go to the dollar tree for rice!!!! SO smart!!! Thanks for sharing! I will again be headed to the dollar tree after watching one of your videos!!!!!
Recently stumbled upon your channel and I love your videos! As a Mom of 9 ages 12 to 3 mos I need something to keep my littles hands busy and I am so thankful for your videos. You have inspired my creative side and I'm not creative ;). Although I'm completely jealous of your well stocked DT! My stores don't have many of the items you suggest :( .
HI there! I'm so glad you stumbled and found me, that makes me so happy!! Love your big family, I'm sure you are always coming up with ideas. And I'm also so happy to hear that you are getting creative, you really have to with littles! My Dollar Tree is pretty good, but I do go to several for one video, we have about 7 in our area.
@@ThePurpleAlphabet I don't come up with my own ideas, God leads me to other Mama's like you for inspiration, but yes I have to keep on my toes. Always looking for good ideas for schedules, organization, and everything else. I use what works and quickly figure out what doesn't ;). I will have to start looking at more than one Dollar Tree.
@@MelB868 there are days, but I wouldn't trade the noise and chaos for anything. I told my Hubby before we were married I wanted six kiddos and if he didn't like it to hit the road. After we got married I said or eight or 12 whatever God blesses us with. He said now I'm hitting the road, LOL. God is ALWAYS faithful and I'm so thankful.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and in school to be an OTA, and currently work as a recreation therapist for developmentally disabled people. These are great ideas and I'm thinking this can be used with my residents too. Do you have an ideas geared towards seniors who are low functioning? Thank you so much for the ideas.
Hi there, welcome! I'm glad you are here. I think many of the same activities can be used for other ages, especially the fine motor activities. Search my channel for fine motor and maybe there will be some good stuff there.

Awesome video. We love sensory bins! I like that you actually explain how to prep/make sensory bins in steps. If you cannot find the tweezers, we use the small tongs you can buy from the party utensil section :-)
hello I am a new to your page and I've seen two videos so far and I loved it. do you have any videos on teaching toddlers? my daughter is two and I am always looking for things to do with her and teach. thank you so much
does anyone please have a tutorial with bean bags and how to make it into a fidget bean bag I cannot find anything on here?? thank you for your help :)
Awesome video! Love the ideas. I've heard you have to train your child to play in a sensory bin. My toddler will definitely try to dump the bin out but I'm going to try it with her and see how it goes.
Yes, expect a mess at first... but you could also start with something easy, like pom poms if a mess is a concern. Rice is the one that can get every where. We always use a towel for easy clean up.
Love your videos and have used a lot of your ideas in my junior preschool room!! Question though.....is anyone from Canada??? Ive been to several dollar trees in my area(Ontario) and can't find a lot of items so just curious if the states stores carry different things
I'm a teacher at a daycare. I would love to add pasta and rice to our sensory bins but we are not allowed to use any type of food for play. I really wish we could because they are a great texture for kids to learn.
The Purple Alphabet yeah it kinda sucks. They just don't want to teach kids that it's okay to waste food I guess. and our health food program doesn't allow it
The Purple Alphabet I will put it together at church I get there early on Sunday mornings. It was a nature activity in the book and a good sensory activity too especially for the child in my Sunday school class with autism.
The kids in Sunday school loved the sensory bin. They said this is cool. I didn’t get to do everything I wanted with it but we are going to use it again next week they loved it.
I have never been able to find the 4 pack of multicolored pourer bowls even years ago. Do you know where I might find similar multicolored bowls like that? I have a severely Autistic, nonverbal son who loves sensory bins.
Since this video was several years ago, it's likely they don't carry them anymore. Here is an affiliate link to a similar set amzn.to/3x4ztIp They aren't a dollar, but they do have a spout.
It depends on the child. I'd always make sure you supervise..... and make sure you adapt to your child's skill level. My kids started as toddlers with some items.
Great question! I tend to keep the base the same material... like all rice or all dried pasta. Then I mix in the tools and enhancements. I've seen other mix things up or do one thing on one side and another on the other. There is really no wrong way.
The Purple Alphabet awesome I'm going to make her sensory bottles and a bin layer. I love these ideas and you videos thanks for sharing! Helps give me ideas as I'm really considering homeschooling also
You can get plastic magnetic letters the wooden alphabets are blocks. In all my life I’ve never seen wooden alphabet magnets in all my 38 years of living
Very nice ideas! Have you tried the Daiso pom poms? They are my favorite because they are firmer than the dollar tree ones. Check them out next time you're at daiso. ;)

Thank you for this! 💟
Man your dollar store is awesome, mine is soo crappy compared to the items you have!
I just made one for my Granddaughter of sand from the dollar tree and some small shells I had around the house
Oh that sounds like fun!
such a great tips in all of your videos ! makes me want to go to dollar store right now :)
does anyone please have a tutorial with bean bags and how to make it into a fidget bean bag I cannot find anything on here?? thank you for your help :)
Thanks so much for your kind words!! I think I have a few subscribers from Canada. Makes me sad to hear that things are so different!!
Super Awesome!!!
I'm a teacher at a daycare. I would love to add pasta and rice to our sensory bins but we are not allowed to use any type of food for play. I really wish we could because they are a great texture for kids to learn.
Oh that's a bummer! Our preschool uses food and there are so many uses!
The Purple Alphabet yeah it kinda sucks. They just don't want to teach kids that it's okay to waste food I guess. and our health food program doesn't allow it
It’s probably allergies my book tells me to check with parents about allergies first before a child touches, taste or plays with food
I got things for my sensory bin. I have beans, lentils, oatmeal, rice and noodles. I already had a plastic container.
Great! Have fun putting everything together!
The Purple Alphabet I will put it together at church I get there early on Sunday mornings. It was a nature activity in the book and a good sensory activity too especially for the child in my Sunday school class with autism.
That's a great idea! I love it.I hope it is a hit!
The Purple Alphabet They will be supervised to see if nothing goes in their mouths I hope they like it I will let you know afterwards how it goes
I'm 15 with really bad ansixety and I can never find videos that say where to get cheap and good idems
Dollar Tree
How do you work around the sensory problems we have problems with sticky greasy dirty rough and sauce
Good question - we'd ease into with increased exposure. Take it very slow.... and start off with tolerated textures first.
So much fun! Love this video!! :)
Really love this video
Thank you! Are you making sensory bins?
Yes! I’m about to make one soon
You always have such great ideas!!
Aww, thank you so much!
Aw, thank you so much!
Awesomeness🐝🌼🐝🌼🐝
Love This!
Great video!
Thank you so much!
What age or grade range do you think these are good for?
It depends on the child. I'd always make sure you supervise..... and make sure you adapt to your child's skill level. My kids started as toddlers with some items.
Do you mix what you put in the bins or is it just one thing ? I think about doing one all the time.
Helps give me ideas as I'm really considering homeschooling also
That's amazing, I'm so glad you are here. :o) Keep me posted on how everything goes.
The Purple Alphabet thank you and will do! Probably won't make until next week but will definitely tag you on IG ☺
Oh I'd love that!
I've looked and looked for those wooden alphabet magnets. I can't find them. Please show a finished sensory bin.
They come back from time to time. You can also find some on amazon!
Check them out next time you're at daiso. ;)
Great suggestion! I haven't tried them yet because I have so many right now, but you are tempting me to try!
This was so cool
Can one yr olds play with these?
I also suggest looking at the age on the package and using your best judgement as a parent.
Clean mud tp a bar of soap and water
You make clean mud out of baking soda and water or corn starch and water I forget which but it’s differently not toilet paper soap and water
Can you make a sensory board
That's a great idea!
I work at a daycare
That's great!
Hola soy de Perú y en mi país no hay esas cosas hermosas
Older kid more than Three years old
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
My only concern is that my son still likes to put things in his mouth and a lot of these things would be toxic if swallowed. 😩
Your concerns are very valid! For sure supervise and use discretion.
I will also have to supervise my Sunday school class to make sure nothing goes in their mouth.
Watch for kids putting things in their mouth.
Yes! Of course!
Please don't call other brand containers Tupperware....they are not Tupperware.
Horrible idea for baby’s and toddlers, too many small object thst they can choke on
stop using food in your sensory bins. remember food insecurity. "you arent supposed to play with your food" this is why they get confused.
Thank you for the suggestion. We actually encourage our children to play with their food at the table as part of eating therapy.
Everything is raw. I’m going to use food stuff in mine the kids in my class need sensory play
