    LYRICS:
    What a beautiful jasmine flower!
    What a beautiful jasmine flower!
Fragrant and beautiful it fills the branch
It's sweet-smelling and white, everyone praises it.
Let me come and pick a few
To give to my loved one
    Jasmine flower, oh Jasmine flower

So this is my theory as to why music is the universal language. When we hear music, the whole soundscape of a song transmits a feeling to the listener that, because of the nature of music as an art form, is never completely what the composer or artist is trying to get across. The individual listener adds something of themselves and their own experience to the song. I also think there is something in the way the human brain is wired so that when we hear a foreign language the brain processes it as music to recognize it as a form of communication and not just noise. Our brain then tries to add further meaning by contextualizing the sound. When a melody and instrumentation is added, it brings a familiar reference point that helps our understanding because it adds a known context to the foreign language we are hearing. And while it is nice to understand the story in a song's lyrics, I think it is often times better to not know what the words translate to. If you are listening to a piece of music and trying to mentally translate the lyrics in real time, the emotion and essence of the song is lost. The main point of language is to connect and bond people via shared experience. Words can fail us in the moment because people have different vocabularies and idiomatic understanding, so what better way to share experience than with music?
