You said an interesting thing here, the 50 cal was shooting at 330 to get great range on a Tourney field. Why is it that the ASTM standard is measured in FPS and not joules of energy? A 50 cal paintball would need to be travelling at 390 FPS before it even came close to a 68 cal at 300. Even Airsoft is shot at 450 FPS so it honestly can’t be a safety issue.
.50 isn't dead. It's the round of choice for rentals. It's like how your local GoKart track puts on hard tires rather than grippy ones to save money on wear as most newbies aren't gonna care anyway.

I found a GI Milsim Impulse50 (50 cal 09 Impulse), a full 50 cal Freak kit with all the inserts, and modified the feedneck to fit a Rotor with 3D printed internals to load 50 cal perfectly. And I never got a chance to use it.
i mean there's no reason you can't use it even if others are using 68 cals. as long as whatever field you play at sells 50 cal or allows you to bring your own.
To be fair, my local site uses 50cal for all the punter gear, etek2's with 50cal kits and the little pump guns for kids. We still prefer the 68 for the big boy stuff, mainly because it's all the kit we all ready own.

What was so bad about having higher velocities with 50cal ? Wouldn't the smaller mass projectile mean less energy being transferred to the target, therefore balancing out the higher velocities?
It's probably an upper limit for the paintball integrity. If you shoot a paintball too fast (regardless of caliber) it'll break apart because the air forces acting on it are too great. The other big issue with cranking up velocity is that kinetic energy increases with the square of an object's velocity. With that in mind, there's not a ton of room for velocity increases before .50 cal's kinetic energy surpasses the equivalent energy for a .68 cal at 300 fps. I think accuracy might also suffer past a certain velocity.

At the Field i worker and played they use 50cal splatmaster pumpmarker for kids and after that its a tippman 50 cal fore juniors and then its 68 cal works really good
No it didn't fail. I have .50cal pistol as side arm in magfed games shooting 330-340fps. A lot of people do so in europe, at least in sweden and finland. It's good to play with people who can understand simple math and are ok with it. If 50.cal would be allowed to shoot 350+ in tournaments, you wouldn't see 68cal anymore anywhere.
And I think the reason paintball companies are slinging lawsuits like crazy is because it is such a small sport, that they actually need the sales of their product or else they’ll fail. They need to have their product reign supreme so that they can keep in business. Just my 2 cents
I figure it’s because people who wanted to play for less just went to Airsoft. Folks who wanted it to hurt less also suffered with poor range and accuracy and just decided to give it up. Pump players already struggle with showing a good hit; less fill doesn’t help... and yeah - F GI Sportz.
I have been working as a ref at a couple fields in Georgia near where I live(WildFire Paintball) for 8 months now, and half of our rental markers for rec players are 50 cal, and at least half of our customers during the week are 50 cal players, mostly groups with children. I do get shot quite often as a ref, and I have to say it sucks to get shot by the 50 cal moreso than the 68's. They sting more than the 68's, and often do not break on target so head and finger shots hurt far more imo in those spots when they dont break than 68.....
I think in practice, most players aren't at large fields with support for oddball stuff. For kids playing recball in the back 40, you play with what they have access to. Basically all of those kids like the idea of being "sniper" so 50 cal initially sounds exciting to them until they learn that it had less practical range and it wasn't in stock at the local wall mart or farm supply.

Fields ruined 50 cal at the local level by taking too long to have 50 cal games regularly and charging too much to play it because they thought the lower cost was hurting their sales. So short sighted.
it seems .50 cal is still alive in two very small areas: the low impact birthday party for little kids, and for cqb pistols (which is perfect for .50 cal)

Mike I used to be a huge fan, but I got out of the sport just because I started prioritizing other things. I have 2 GI Milsim Nanos with a freak kit, and a loader or two that I bought off eBay a whiiileee back after seeing you use one at LL. Had a lot of fun with them and .50 cal but one needed parts or an ORing that I could never find. Seeing .50 cal content is awesome 😂. Let me know if you have any interest in more .50 cal guns I’d love to see these two Nanos go somewhere they’d be appreciated.

Well, okkk but saying we'll loose maybe some range is not a small thing. Just consider how much thought has gone from people i paintball to get the extra range, flatline, apex, hammerhead barrels and lately shaped projectiles i.e. first strikes. Then another thing, also consider the fact that we want more paint on people for clearer marking. Last but not least if we go to small call then why not just go to airsoft? Paintball will be a softer sport and will loose the edge it has. It might go parallel like you said, but i would want fields to say, things like: it s a 50 cal scenario today. Dont get me wrong they can coexist but still i think that paintball IS 68 cal. IF some fields or companies are trying to find ways to get new people in the sport,, then that's not it..
.50 cal isnt dead? planet eclipse, valken, tippmann and others make 50cal guns etc and its popular in europe, especially for low impact paintball for small kids. Tippmann even do a mag fed 50cal gun now.

@@AustinK95 played at Xfactor yesterday - half of the staging area was covered in 50 from the rec feilds... its CHEAPER for feilds to use 50cal and 90% of people that play with it dont even kow the difference because they are renters or Bday parties. And if you knew anything you would know that THE MARKET is renters and parties, not tourney or even woodsball players... So to say 50cal is dead is just idiotic.

Mike has a video on it. Buy a good mask, then a good loader, then a good tank, then buy any gun you want and slowly upgrade away from renting gear. $300 wont get you much in terms of a complete setup. Paintball is expensive
If you’re spending money on your own gear you may as well get the good stuff thats miles better than the stuff you can rent at any field for $10 or less
Mask pants first. $70-$100 range. Whatever on pants. Then get a air tank not co2.. Then check goodwill and police stations for cheapguns. Talking electric autocockers for $30with extra acc..

Same at our field. It's fun, and we even get parents out there with their kids, using the .50 cal and they have a blast with it.

IMHO, .50 was/is great for indoor fields. Still have an indoor field about an hour away that is rental only with .50 markers.

I still use 50cal some times it's fun to use. if you like to rush you might like it due to the amount of paintball you can shoot before reloading.
