- I show you how to setup a MIG welder for the very first time. The Blue Demon 140msi is a great MIG welder to get started with and be all in for under $500 including accessories. The welder sells for $265.99 which leaves enough room for shielding gas, a regulator, wire and saftey equipment.

Just got mine and yes, it has the digital readouts. Other than the pathetic ground clamp, the welder is just plain awesome. I already had a gas setup, pure co2. I put an 11 pound reel of .030 wire in. I tried welding with both the synergetic and manual modes. The welds are smooth with good penetration, and zero spatter! I replaced the short little ground camp with 10 feet of #4 cable, ending in a tweco style clamp. The welder is great! Thank you for your demo and thanks to Blue Demon! Love my Game Changers too!
My instructor told me when welds get the “nipple” is because you are still pressing the trigger at the very end of the weld and backing away out of instinct because you know the weld is almost done. I hate mig. But great video :D

Thanks for this. How about one of these smaller units with flux core wire. I would like to see someone with your experience give their thoughts. I am just setting up a welding rig for the first time, and don't expect to be fabricating more than stuff for around the house. Thanks, and appreciate your content. Great video man. My daily is a fronius mig welder. But this is a fantastic budget entry point for new welders. If you want a recommendation for a budget tig welder to mess around with, I tried a slightly (very) sketchy machine called the Sungold 225. I ended up just using it for mostly stick, but it only cost around $200.
I plan to do one at some point for sure, don’t have a recommendation off hand though.

I like that you’re upfront about having a video sponsored. Too many guys just say they “got” the product, and go on about how great it is. The hint is that they paid for it, even though they may not show it again.
The rule for extension cords for welding is one larger gauge size for 25 feet of extension than the cord on the welder. 32 CFM is pretty high. 20 should be about right. Too much gas can suck air into the weld puddle.

By the way, what is called the "ground clamp" is not ground for real. It just continues the electric circuit into the welder again. You always need a closed circuit to use electricity. The plugs on the machine are + and -, that does not equal ground.
The - terminal on a car is also considered ground

Really loved the video and I've been following you for a little while. Ive been on the hunt for a good budget welder lately so this was a great video.
I do personally feel like you were reaching a little bit for positive things to say just because the price point was fairly low and you didn't want to harsh on it too bad. I know I'd personally really like to know if you'd give someone like a cousin or son this as their first welder or if you'd save another 500 and get a more powerful unit.
I would, BUT if you can save to buy a quality 240v welder I’d do that as it will go further. BUT again, haha, if you bought this one first and then a larger welder later you probably wouldn’t regret it as you can take this one anywhere especially if you put some flux core wire in it.

Were you using the right roller? If that was .30 wire, it looked like you had the roller set for .25. You might have to flip it around. Not sure if that noise was the wire slipping or something. The spatter is something I'm not sure about. Almost like you were running 100% CO2 instead of C25. Did you ever figure out why you were getting so much spatter>
I haven’t had a chance to mess with it again, had to get the video edited and posted. Each edit is at least 2 days of work in itself.
after watching a bunch of your welding videos I think tig would be my best bet it seems to have way cleaner welds with no sparks flyin all over the place I do a lot of wood stuff to id probably burn down my garage with a mig or stick welder

One question, I saw you have a couple of dramas with the wire unspooling... do you wind that back in, if so are there any considerations, or do you snip and bin?
20 CFM is all you need. 32 is ridiculous. It's way to loud. Should be a quiet hiss with mig. Not as much flow as tig

Depends on the size and if you buy or lease. You’d have to get a hold of your local supplier for real numbers.
Anywhere from around $180+ for the first bottle and then you just pay for refills
I just bought a 60 cu ft tank for my mig for $170 + the gas.
I’m pretty sure the sync adjustment adjusts your wire speed also

You could test TIG with it still by doing a scratch start set up. Not ideal for high quality but if you're doing garage TIG would be great showing what the welders capable of
I might be able to get my boss to buy one. It's time we upgrade. (I'm sick of lugging 2 bottles around just to spot weld railings. )
Seems like a cheap inverter stick machine would be a good investment.

That Primeweld looks like a really nice $750 unit with a with a good pedal now and CK torch what I seen every loves the tig welder and a killer price I was in the market and then just lost me job because of Pandemic ( A Virus really ) crazy times every take care

@@JustVoss I was currently given a MIG welder by my father, with flux core in it, but have no gas. I have watched him weld stuff from cars, trucks, and school buses, to fence frames and work benches over that last 4 decades, but I have never welded myself till recently (with his help and his welder) when I built a frame for a work bench. So I would second that idea for a flux core MIG vid! The more teachers the better!

At first I thought he was talking to himself behind the helmet to keep pace and then I realized what it was, just that the motor is making noise because they didn’t lubricate the shaft in the welder properly.

How do you weld a bolt onto a sheared off bolt stud on a mounted an intake manifold, in the engine bay? Flux core weld is too messy from what I can see.

I would move left to right instead. Your wire is arcing into the bead and not into the base metal. The bead looks decent but its not penetrating into the joint.
Run it at 18 volts and put wire speed on 3
It is CFH cubic feet per hour. I've never seen a "per minute" Regulator, not saying they don't exist. 32cfh is ridiculously high for the Metal you are Welding. 20cfh should have been plenty for that thin stuff. As soon as you pukled the Trigger I knew you had the Gas to high just from the sound of it. When your Gas is set too high it creates Turbulence, and will cause Porosity and all sorts of other problems.

should a beginner get a mig only and stick welder or a multi process welder?
Will the 140msi take a 1 lb spool? The specs I've seen say 2 lb and 11 lb... I've seen 10 lb but not 11 lb and it doesn't say it will take a 1 lb. Thanks.
Why have the lead hard wired into the machine? This doesn’t allow you to use longer leads or even remove the leads for a more clean and compact transport. Seems like they went cheap on that.
Yeah just trying to bring the price down as much as possible. I don't think many inexpensive machines have removable leads.

@@JustVoss My 60 gallon is off the skid, but it just sits on rubber isolating pads under each foot. I never bolted it to the ground and it never moves. It is close to the garage wall adjacent to my house, so I waned to keep noise to a minimum.
That drive roller doesn't look right. It looks like knurled roller for flux-core wire. Did it come with a V-groove roller for solid wire or is that the only roller it came with? I can understand them picking knurled if there's only one. The knurled will mostly work with solid wire, but a V-groove won't work well with flux-core wire.
That is the only roller it comes with.

Hello mister Voss, I myself am a teacher for youngsters who have mental issues and / or came into trouble with the law. With the corona virus we are no longer allowed to teach irl anymore. But mist if the students have a welding lachine at home. I ve been trying to make an instruction video, but my camera really diesnt like the huge amount of light when I weld. Could you show a photo of your camera setup when you film uourself welding? Specifically when you film the weld bead itself. You would really help me out a lot.

Good review Justin. I work in the weld supply industry, and without fail, I get the guys that buy this stuff everyday. You will not find support for these machines. Doubtful the vinyl jacketed gun is replaceable, let alone the liner. So once your at that point, it may be a throw away machine. So in the end, you’ve wasted money. Both Lincoln & Miller are making MIG/stick ‘multiprocess’ machines that can have a TIG torch added for only a few hundred dollars more. Ya get what ya pay for. Besides, these machines prob have the Corona already installed...if ya know what mean.

What welder would you recommend that is multi process that runs off 230 I have 230 in my shop and want to be able to run all process's for different uses
With or without AC tig? A lot of the multiprocess machines are DC tig only.

Something to consider... you noted a few mistakes while setting up your machine. No problem. Human, right? But maybe you could explain the cause, solution, and prevention for these mistakes as you make them.
You might consider labeling your videos beginner, intermediate, and advanced - just to set expectations
Lastly(?), since you're setting up your gas bottle to a new machine, you may as well show folks how to check for leaks.
I like this video, though, and would grade it 95/100 just so you know I'm not trying to run it down.

@@JustVoss what i meant was that if you are doing a sponsored video you want to show the best results, you showed results of someone that is new to welding OR a machine that cant get clean results, especially with the inconsistent feeds on some shots.
