- Hey guys!
This is part 2 of my 2020 Colorado Trail Unsupported Fastest Known Time Attempt. In part one I had to bail on my attempt at mile 104 around Breckenridge due to stomach issues caused by the 90+ degree heat. I continued on and met up with my buddy Darwin again at the Tennessee Pass Trailhead where we decided to hike through the Collegiate West section together. This video starts around mile 132 of the Colorado Trail.

Glad to see you had a good time here. I like your 3D topo map feature to recap your day's hike. Very cool feature in the video.
Enjoyed the videos. Happy to see you carried on after the FKT was lost. So many times I see people get off trail once they lose the FKT. They forget the beauty that surrounds them and that they are immersed in.
Thanks Jason! I totally agree, if you can't enjoy what's around you then you probably are out there for the wrong reasons.
Thanks for sharing the journey. I often encounter thru-hikers of this trail as they do their first few miles in Waterton canyon. I always wish them good luck and express my envy of their upcoming adventures.
He who spends the most time in the wilderness wins. I am glad you were able to enjoy the trip and roll with the punches.
Totally agree!
Impressive!.... the landscape, your hiking abilities, attitude, photography, editing, music...thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed viewing your trip, beautiful views. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Such an inspiring trip. Love to see it from others viewpoint. Living here, I don’t take it for granted, it’s a blessing. Started the week at 95 degrees, and it’s snowed 5 inches
Thanks Paulette! I heard you guys have had some crazy weather recently!
Keeps getting better
The photography, views & the music choice - I love it
Thanks Christian!
Great part 2. And nice to see your campsides as i noticed they were "missing" in the last video.
Thanks! It's harder to film camp when you're hiking until 9 PM. Once I slowed down I had a little more time on my hands for filming.
@@juicehikes5436 absolutely understandable. Very remarkable to do this attempt in the first place and filming it too!
Found your channel less than an hour ago. Sorry the FKT didn't work out but glad you continued your trek. Great video !
Thanks Scott!
Positive result, althougt you didn't do the record, you seemed to enjoy the journey more and more. Much more chilled. Well done sir, and still a shed load of miles with stunning scenery.
Thanks Nigel! It ended up being a pretty phenomenal trip even after I bailed on the FKT!
Great to see you with Darwin 🥰
Anyone else go "WOW!" at 14:22? Juice, I know elevation-wise/geographically you guys weren't on top of the world, but that scene right there sure as hell looked like you were! That literally made me gasp and I'm not ashamed to say it 😅 Absolutely stunning. Much respect for even attempting this and thanks for taking us along for the hike. -Darby from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦
Thanks Darby! It's a heck of a trail!
Darwin is a class act. you two need to do some trails together
Cool how two super-hikers met up
Darwin is a really cool guy!
Sweet vidoes! I blame Darwin for my obsession, ok... addiction to hiking videos. I love camping, so now I'm dialing down my gear 🤠
Thanks Jared! I'm sure Darwin doesn't help your addiction to hiking videos. Good luck dialing in your gear!
Hey Juice, I was wondering how you guys figure out how to navigate the big trails. How do you know where to hitch a ride in, where to turn and stuff. Might be a good collaboration video with Darwin. I would like to do a big trail one day but am overwhelmed by lack of logistics knowledge.
Guthooks is a really good app. It gives you very detailed maps and GPS coordinates to keep you on trail. There is also a lot of information as you are hiking about where the towns are, what amenities they have and if it's easy to get a hitch. Besides that, I wouldn't get too overwhelmed with the logistics. It's much easier to figure it out on trail by using Guthooks and talking to other hikers that are out there.
Sorry your FKT fell apart, but thanks for sharing the trip anyway! I hadn't seen good footage of this area before. Really liked the background piano track Juice, can you tell me what that was?
Thanks Phillip! I use a program called Epidemic Sound for music tracks.
Beautiful videos, thanks ! How do you protect your food from animals when sleeping?
Thanks Amy! Most of the time I put my food inside my nylofume pack liner and put it inside my pack. This seems to help with smells and I have never had a problem. I sleep with my pack next to me in the vestibule.
Hey Juice, I'm loving your vids. Keep up the good work. I came here from watching your DJI pocket video. Did you film this series, part 1 and 2 on the DJI pocket or your Pixel phone, btw?
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! This series was filmed on my phone unfortunately. The Osmo pocket would have done a better job.
@@juicehikes5436 I see, perhaps you did the trip before getting the Osmo? A lot of respect for your attempt. I'm torn between getting the Osmo Pocket and a GoPro. However, I wanna make more cinematic vids and vlogs, so maybe go for the Osmo Pocket first?
I had the Osmo but I chose to leave it at home due to the added weight and additional battery drain it would have caused on my battery bank. An FKT is usually not the time to bring an additional camera, the phone did ok. Both devices are great, like you said the Osmo has more of a cinematic look but the new Hero Black 9 has better stabilization for walking/running and more detail.
@@juicehikes5436 Ah... I understand. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm finding even as a beginner hiker, I really need to lighten my load (pack-wise and body weight-wise) LOL!
I'm a novice with a question. Most of the video shows you guys carrying your trekking poles. What is your philosophy on when you use the poles?
Use poles when you feel you need them. For me, that's going up and down hills. I carry the poles for the most part on the flats.
Yeah, I thought those fires that began around I-76 may have reached you where you are with the ash fall. Too bad. We got detoured to Hwy 50 on our drive back to OH from 6 weeks in southern Utah hiking. Heard that Black Canyon just got shut down.
Yeah, the wild fires are pretty crazy all over right now.
And just when one gets under control another one popped up. This year just sucks, overall.
what do you use for those end-of-day summaries? sooooo coooool
Thanks Francis! It's just Google Earth and then I do a screen recording.
Sub here, thanks for pulling Darwin's fat out of the fire with his lost video. You saved his day, and a few subs too probably 😉
Haha, thanks John! Darwin's a good dude, I was happy to help out in any way I could. Stinks to lose that much footage.
@@juicehikes5436 We've all done similar stuff like that at one time or another. Hope you complete the CT soon. Outstanding views are ahead, especially the trail sections between Lake City and Silverton.
Wish I had half your energy even on a bad day!!
Haha, it's not so much about pace it's about constant forward momentum. You get to see a ton when you hike from before sunrise to sundown.
Only place I go in Colorado was Mount Blanca 6 14k peaks. Dunes.
Indian Peaks.
I lived in Wild Basin so recommend going up the back side of Meeker. Sand Lake.
Hallet in Rocky is easy but Indian Peaks kill it.
Boulder County.
I prefer Utah CA NV AZ Strip. User friendly.
CA is king. Can stay above 8000 feet. Summer. Not much rain.
Yellowstone takes permits. At Teton you are 75 miles from Dubois. So drive out up toward pass camp drive back to Teton. Easy camping. NF.
I have no idea why you get more advice than any other hiking YTer I have seen. The good news is...you're approachable?
Haha, I guess? People like to have an opinion!
Is hope pass on the colorado trail?
Yup! However you’ll only hit it if you take the Collegiate West route. If you are SOBO it’s the first past after the Collegiate East/West split.
@@juicehikes5436 Interested you go all the way around Twin lakes and don't take the leadville 100 route, though I guess there is a large river to cross if you got that way. Thanks for clearing it up, I had been wondering for some time.
No worries Michael! The shortcut is not apart of the official Colorado Trail so in my opinion you are cheating a bit if you skip it and planned to hike the whole trial.
The Juice is loose.
Haha!
If you really want to break the through record spend two weeks in Nederland or Leadville training by literally running 20 miles a day before you go hiking. You can do it, but your body won't be adjusted without training. I grew up at 9000 feet and I can tell you for a fact when I go to lower elevations I can literally dust everyone on the trail and I'm 51 and never train. What you experienced in the beginning was for sure altitude sickness. Unlike being actually fit your body does have to take time to adjust to the altitude regardless of how Conan the Barbarian you think you are. Also you now know half the journey so you have the advantage of knowing instead of guessing the first half. You are prepped to break it and I believe if you do it right you can break the record.
Hey Rich, you're probably right but taking an extra two weeks with a family at home is pretty tough. I've run/hiked big miles at high elevations before and never had altitude sickness. I've had my stomach turn on me twice before during ultra's where the temp was above 90 degrees (at lower elevation) so that's what I accredited it to this trip as well but who know's for sure. The altitude probably had a lot to do with it as well. I would love to get out there earlier next time to acclimate more and then give it another go.
You can't hike through altitude sickness. You will black out if push altitude sickness too far. Look it up. There is also no "recovering" from it except time (or medication). If you get altitude sickness at a certain elevation, you will continue to be sick at that altitude as you approach it. That will continue for at least a week because it takes your body a long time (between 3 months to 6 months) to adapt. Altitude adjustment involves your spleen breaking down old blood cells and that takes at least 3 months.
I will fully back both the doctor on part 1 & Juice's experience. As the physician posted, Juice had some sort of heat-related reaction/illness.
Beautiful hike, and awesome video as always my friend! Thanks so much for sharing - check out my latest backpacking video if you'd like, I think you'll dig it! Thanks again :)
Thanks Thomas! Cool video!
