  • Hey guys!
    This is part 2 of my 2020 Colorado Trail Unsupported Fastest Known Time Attempt. In part one I had to bail on my attempt at mile 104 around Breckenridge due to stomach issues caused by the 90+ degree heat. I continued on and met up with my buddy Darwin again at the Tennessee Pass Trailhead where we decided to hike through the Collegiate West section together. This video starts around mile 132 of the Colorado Trail.

    Hey Juice, I was wondering how you guys figure out how to navigate the big trails. How do you know where to hitch a ride in, where to turn and stuff. Might be a good collaboration video with Darwin. I would like to do a big trail one day but am overwhelmed by lack of logistics knowledge.

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +2

      Guthooks is a really good app. It gives you very detailed maps and GPS coordinates to keep you on trail. There is also a lot of information as you are hiking about where the towns are, what amenities they have and if it's easy to get a hitch. Besides that, I wouldn't get too overwhelmed with the logistics. It's much easier to figure it out on trail by using Guthooks and talking to other hikers that are out there.

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +1

      I had the Osmo but I chose to leave it at home due to the added weight and additional battery drain it would have caused on my battery bank. An FKT is usually not the time to bring an additional camera, the phone did ok. Both devices are great, like you said the Osmo has more of a cinematic look but the new Hero Black 9 has better stabilization for walking/running and more detail.

    Only place I go in Colorado was Mount Blanca 6 14k peaks. Dunes.
    Indian Peaks.
    I lived in Wild Basin so recommend going up the back side of Meeker. Sand Lake.
    Hallet in Rocky is easy but Indian Peaks kill it.
    Boulder County.
    I prefer Utah CA NV AZ Strip. User friendly.
    CA is king. Can stay above 8000 feet. Summer. Not much rain.
    Yellowstone takes permits. At Teton you are 75 miles from Dubois. So drive out up toward pass camp drive back to Teton. Easy camping. NF.

    If you really want to break the through record spend two weeks in Nederland or Leadville training by literally running 20 miles a day before you go hiking. You can do it, but your body won't be adjusted without training. I grew up at 9000 feet and I can tell you for a fact when I go to lower elevations I can literally dust everyone on the trail and I'm 51 and never train. What you experienced in the beginning was for sure altitude sickness. Unlike being actually fit your body does have to take time to adjust to the altitude regardless of how Conan the Barbarian you think you are. Also you now know half the journey so you have the advantage of knowing instead of guessing the first half. You are prepped to break it and I believe if you do it right you can break the record.

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Rich, you're probably right but taking an extra two weeks with a family at home is pretty tough. I've run/hiked big miles at high elevations before and never had altitude sickness. I've had my stomach turn on me twice before during ultra's where the temp was above 90 degrees (at lower elevation) so that's what I accredited it to this trip as well but who know's for sure. The altitude probably had a lot to do with it as well. I would love to get out there earlier next time to acclimate more and then give it another go.

    • @beccakreidler8290
      @beccakreidler8290 Před 3 lety

      You can't hike through altitude sickness. You will black out if push altitude sickness too far. Look it up. There is also no "recovering" from it except time (or medication). If you get altitude sickness at a certain elevation, you will continue to be sick at that altitude as you approach it. That will continue for at least a week because it takes your body a long time (between 3 months to 6 months) to adapt. Altitude adjustment involves your spleen breaking down old blood cells and that takes at least 3 months.
      I will fully back both the doctor on part 1 & Juice's experience. As the physician posted, Juice had some sort of heat-related reaction/illness.
