    The Cell 2009
    Embark on a compelling, mind-blowing, and complex journey through 300 years of history to discover the secrets of the cell - and of life itself. In this fascinating series, Dr Adam Rutherford delves back through time to the first observations of the cellular structure of plants; the search for the secret of life that led scientists deep into the inner workings of the cell; and to modern research in synthetic biology that could see us create life from scratch. It is a story of rivalries and secrecy, mistakes and accidents, and sudden insights that have overturned scientific and religious dogma.

    Not to oversimplify. There is no DNA in these meteorites, only signs of uracil, one of the nucleoside bases that comprises RNA. Neither does it prove that "life is extraterrestrial in origin", but it does point to the rich stew of organic building blocks that the Earth inherited from the solar system.

    • @skibidingg
      @skibidingg Před měsícem +6

      Have you heard about RNA(uracil) world??
      RNA is the primitive nucleic acid for all the organisms at the initial stages but DNA has evolved as a genetic material because of it's stability.
      DNA is more stable than RNA because of the presence of thymine group in DNA
      In RNA uracil is less stable so it is more vulnerable to mutations. This property makes RNA as genetic material in viruses evolve at faster rate and undergo mutations

      And yet this evidence proves that the building blocks for life and our DNA was around even before our planet EARTH was even created. But the bible does have some right still in our creation, except for the fact that the first man was not formed as the bible says. The bible after all is a theory (not physical proof) of how the existance of the universe was made. The bible today is more of a guide to everyone to assist in living life and full of knowledge to help you through your challenges. As a source of knowledge the "Bible" is important cause it contains stories and scriptors to help understand many of lives challenges except for how we were made. Science will always explain this as it is backed up by PHYSICAL evidence.

    • @hyperian_one
      @hyperian_one Před měsícem +3

      No, it most certainly not an amino acid. It is part of a nucleoside base (part of a nucleic acid) found in RNA, that is fascinating because it has silicon attached to it. Silicon is not part of any functioning nucleic acid on earth. It's unfortunate that some people watching this video think it has anything to do with amino acids. That should have been clarified in the footnotes.

    • @radupopescu9977
      @radupopescu9977 Před měsícem +1

      @@hyperian_one Indeed. Organic compounds can be obtain abiotically. Still, the sequences even for sugars it's incredibly hard to obtain. That compound in the video is not a chiral one. When chirality comes up, any trying in laboratory to obtain chiral compounds it's a mess. And except glycine, all amino acids are chiral. And there are a lot of types of chirality (central, axial, helicoidal, etc.)
      We can't obtain (without a living organism, such genetic engineered bacteria, or enzymes (which again are proteins produces by living organisms)) same sequences as in proteins. It get worse: folding proteins it's an enigma. There is a no known process (again without the use of another living organism) to fold proteins as in our body.

      @@radupopescu9977the entire ocean was at one point a stew of acids. It can’t be replicated because of the size of the experiment needed. The heat, the pressure, the variety of acids, the bombardment of meteorites and volcanoes and water, along with massive lightning storms… how do you replicate that in a lab? You simply can’t. We are not talking about billions, but trillions or more of individual interactions between different acids under different conditions over billions of years until there was a match between nucleic acids to form the first RNA strand. Then we are talking another several million if not a billion years till DNA and a single cell bacteria rose out of that equation. It’s not an enigma. We just can’t recreate the conditions to witness it ourselves, there is a difference.

    This is not very good isn't it? The video is titled origin of life, then we talked about molecule as complex as DNA. But the discovery is nothing about the molecule DNA, but just a base of the DNA. There is a huge gap in what is described vs what actually the discovery is. Of course we already know that we are made of star stuff. And organic materials of course have been observed in space by telescope. I wished these videos are headlined more like science than tabloid.

    The probability of randomness creating proteins and then those proteins randomly sorting and bonding to others in the correct order to create the primordial DNA is so slim that it might seem impossible to us.
    But the Universe is so vast it seems Infinite to us, and that Infinity makes the Slim Random Chance of DNA look not so rare. In fact the mathematical theory shows the real oddity would be no DNA at all. And that chance is not that small that we might be alone, it is large enough that DNA could've emerged several times, in several ages and several locations in the Universe.

    4:46 "We finally proved that components of our genetic code were in fact extra-terrestrial, and were present in a meteorite sample."
    Absolutely disagree. The last part of that statement is correct: you proved that a nucleotide was present in a meteorite sample, meaning that the careful procedures prove the molecule you detected came from the space rock and not from outside contamination. But you absolutely did not prove that our genetic code is extra-terrestrial in ORIGIN. That is a giant logical leap unsupported by the evidence.
    Just because you found X inside a space rock does NOT mean that ALL instances of X come EXCLUSIVELY from space rocks. That is deeply unscientific. We are finding all kinds of organic compounds throughout space (including nucleotides) leading to the conclusion that they are fairly common and their formation is energetically favorable. There is no reason to think they did not also form in abundance on the early Earth.
