You guys REALLY should have listened to this with "The Load Out". The two songs together is a complete work, you're only getting half the impact. He ended this live performance first with a very heart-felt tribute to his crew that makes the shows possible during "The Load Out", then when "Stay" begins he's turning to the audience showing them the same appreciation. He's making the point that his crew and the audience are on the same level, one just as important as the other. I would really suggest doing this video again with both songs.

Totally agree. You don't get the full ambience without The Load Out included. Maybe another reaction sometime.. Sort of like listening to Closer To Home by Grand Funk Railroad without the lead in from I'm Your Captain which unfortunately the record company did when they released it as a single on its own.

I also suggested those 2 songs, both are really GREAT! Doctor My Eyes is really catchy and has a real kind of message and Running On Empty, altho it's a faster paced song, can actually bring tears to my eyes, the lyrics are straight nostalgic & somewhat sentimental, at least for me, they seem to mean more & more every time I hear it, especially with every passing year, but it's one of my favorite songs ever! I also love the musical composition as well as I do the lyrics!

As others have said this is the second half of his concert closer. The first half is called The Load Out and is a tribute to his crew the second half (this part) is a reworked cover of a Four Seasons classic the two songs dovetail together as one piece. Other songs, The Pretender, Doctor My Eyes, Shape of a Heart, Running On Empty, Got To Be Somebody's Baby, Tender Is The Night, Lawyers in Love just to rattle off a few of his top hits and charting singles.

  • @TheCkent100

There are three singers on this song. Jackson starts and ends the song. The female voice is one of his background singers Rosemary Butler. The high voice (where you stopped the song) is his guitarist David Lindley.
And I will add my vote to everyone else that has said that the only way to hear this song is with "The Loud-Out" preceding it. "The Load-Out / Stay" is the closing track on Jackson's album "Running on Empty" which was recorded live in various locations, including live on stage, at rehearsals, in tour buses and in hotel rooms. To get the full impact of the "Stay", you have to hear it with "The Load-Out".

When I moved to South Carolina in 2018, I was surprised by the lack of local artists (barring the likes of James Brown, who moved north). Oh, sorry, points deducted for not playing the first part of this "The Loadout (roadies song)."
"Stay" was a '50s hit from Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.
The high falsetto part at the end was sung by Brownes guitarist David Lindley.
Jackson Browne is sometimes referred to as "The Other Eagle", as he was good friends with those guys and there were always rumors of him officially joining them, but it never happened.
But, he did tour with them as a solo act a couple of times.

Is this really your first Jackson Browne song? I'm astonished! "Doctor, My Eyes" was his first big single, and I think it should be your next one. You can also add "Somebody's Baby", "Lawyers in Love", and "Runnin' On Empty" to your list. Mr. Browne is definitely worth diving into - he was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2004, and rightly so. FYI - This is a cover of a 1960 song originally recorded by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. It's also been covered by The Four Seasons, The Hollies, and even Cyndi Lauper. Also - the one singing in falsetto is not Jackson. That voice belongs to David Lindley. The female voice is Rosemary Butler. Both have decades of vocal experience.

Redo - Load Out / Stay live. Also from Jackson Browne "Doctor My Eyes." & " Running on Empty" -- BTW way back in the beginning of his career, Glenn Frey lived in an apartment above Jackson Browne and he could hear Jackson working out a song on the piano. He credits that for teaching him how to work out a song. Also the Eagles song "Take it Easy" was a Jackson Browne song but Jackson got stuck on the lyrics. Glenn took the song and finished it beginning with the lyrics - "It's a girl My Lord in a flat bed ford".

The falsetto singing heard at the end of the song is provided by Browne’s long-time guitarist, David Lindley. If you see the live you'll see he's clearly having a lark, but he's really singing it!

You should have listened to the whole thing. The single, "The Load-Out"/"Stay" was a huge hit from Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" album, and was played on the radio everywhere with both songs back to back... they naturally seque from one song to the other.

Speaking about Linda Ronstadt, she does a fantastic version of Jackson Browne's song For a Dancer (with Emmylou Harris) - her, Jackson and the Eagles all started out around the same time in Southern California (I'm sure there were others but they are the ones that spring to mind). I'll have to look up Rosemary Butler because her voice is perfect in this song and I don't know anything about her - thanks for mentioning her name.

The two different high pitched voices are Rosiemary Butler,I believe she has a three octave range.
The second voice is Jackson s long time friend David lindley he is a master guitar player ,slide guitar, and violin
This is the second half of the melody, the load out / stay
From the running on empty album.
You should listen to the title track
    Running on empty.
Other great Jackson Browne songs are
    The pretender
    Jamaica say you will
    Linda Paloma
    Somebody s baby

This song was at the end of a live show and the band was all getting a part to shine including the back-up singers and other musicians. It starts with a song "The Load Out" which is about packing everything up and moving the show to the next city then it goes into Stay which is the band pleading with the audience to stay for another song.

My heart sank when I saw the title "Stay" in your reaction. I remember as a kid some radio stations would only play "Stay" cause the real song was too long for radio format. Travesty then, travesty now, only listening to "Stay." Whoever recommended only "Stay" really did you guys dirty and deprived you of listening to this magnificent song for the first time in it's entirety. It's the very definition of skipping a novel and reading only it's end. After listening to "The Load Out/Stay" in it's entirety you should then listen to "Running on Empty" which I think is his best song. Jackson Browne also helped co-write The Eagles "Take it Easy." There's a neat story behind that.

❤️ I enjoyed the reaction, AS ALWAYS, but I think most of us were hoping for you guys to react to this in it's entirety which is actually 2 separate songs kind of consolidated into 1, written out as "THE LOAD OUT" & "STAY" well, the first continues into the second making it 1 long song, at least the way Jackson Browne recorded it & usually sang it live anyway (but it's still 2 different songs) ... Dang, it seems really confusing trying to type it out here!😜
🎶"The Load Out" / "Stay" the( LIVE BBC 1978) video is probably the best, actually I believe this recording was taken from that concert, but we know you guys like to also watch the artists perform as we all do. Honestly, I think it's way better if you do watch the video performance for this one. The song "Stay" alone isn't the best for a first time introduction to Jackson Browne, in my opinion. I strongly suggest "Doctor My Eyes" , "The Pretender" & one of my fave songs EVER "Running on Empty". Jackson Browne is another great songwriter, but this one is a cover song, it was originally written/ released around the start of the 60s by a group called The Zodiacs, a lot of others have covered it too, I think Buddy Holly & The Crickets had a version also. I really hope you guys still check it out as "The Load Out" and "Stay" (LIVE BBC 1978)".
BTW, JACKSON BROWNE is the lead singer's real name but it also refers to the band as a whole, so the band is also known as JACKSON BROWNE. 😀
    PLEASE also Check out:
"THE LOAD OUT" (with or without the song "STAY") it's a great song either way!

The Load-Out/Stay,” Jackson Browne's song about life on the road, is memorable for incorporating lyrics from “Stay,” the '50s hit from Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs. The falsetto singing heard at the end of the song is provided by Browne's long-time guitarist, David Lindley
