This really is a remarkable performance of one of the greatest cello sonatas. It has all the right ingredients, and in just the right setting at Mansfield St W1. Sadly due to covid restrictions there could be no audience when performed in the summer of 2020, but how blessed we are to have this outstanding recording for posterity.

That was absolutely beautiful, thank you so much Ab Classics for bringing such a treasure to my day, and shining some light on a wet and windy afternoon in Carlisle. The interplay between Tom and Guy was fabulous, I admit I tuned in to hear Guy on the cello, and was spellbound as usual, but also delighted by the piano, especially the tenderness of the second section. This is the first time I have watched a concert live, and its so much more special than watching it on reply, to know you are there in time with the musicians and with the rest of the online audience. It will never replace the concerts I have enjoyed attending in Dumfries and galloway but its wonderful to enjoy them in a different way at the moment. It was a shame about the lag between the video and the sound from 35 minutes onwards, however I closed my eyes and enjoyed it in a more surreal way, and desire this issue, the sound and video quality was superb, better than i imagined it could be with the seamless links between watching the piano and cello. I am eagerly looking forward to the next three weeks of concert!

Having learnt of the passionate nature of this work it seemed odd to hear Guy Johnson give so emotionally underpowered a performance- very English, restrained almost Elgarian? Fortunately Tom Poster does not share this view!
