  • 913 was built in 1993 with Detroit Diesel 6V92 and Allison HTB748 and later was repowered to Cummins ISM and Allison B400R in 2002.
I like this recording a lot because 912 sounded very different from other repowered 900 series buses.
From 13:11 till end of clip, 913 was speeding on Hwy 92 from Half Moon Bay to Hillsdale Shopping Center. You can hear the bus climbing up the hill at 18:00 and at 28:00 diving down the highway.
Here is a sister bus of 913, 912 on the same route in year 2002 shortly after it got repowered in 2001.

Absolutely amazing video man I just subscribe to your channel. Do you think you could try to do more audio recordings of these old buses try and see if you can do one with a Jake brake that would be really cool. Stay safe man and have a blessed one.

Which bus models are you particularly interested? Most records I did were dated back in 2000-2003…

@@HKT120 I love the van holes. What does Siri 60 Detroit in the caterpillars with the Jake brakes? Those are awesome.

it kind of sounds like the old way a bit. i love this bus. i wish the old Detroit Diesel 6V92 with Allison HTB748 engines were still made..... I know emissions was the issue with these types of engines which is why they had to be converted or even retired but i always wondered if it was still possible for these engines to be made or not. anyone know??

I managed to save one bus with a 6V92 and HT748. But the bus was made in 1990, unlike this bus in the clip that was made in 1993. I always think the 6V92 made in 1993 are slightly different than in 1990.

This bus has a nice sound to it. Did you get recordings of the 1983 or 1984 versions?

For Samtrans, I do have 9868 and 9876.

HKT120 Seeing that they had a 9 in front of the number, they were in contract service too I presume?

***** This 9 series didn't get renumbered to 99XX as far as I know...

HKT120 You're right. They never did, which indicates Samtrans kept these buses.

did these buses have the brown wood paneling all along the inside of the bus and on the back wall along with the black AC vent in the back wall?

Yep, ironically the 1983-1984's didn't have the woodgrain by the AC vent.

Sounds beautiful at 28:00. Is that loud noise coming from the axle? ClassicTVMan1981X Ninja Bus Fan

+TheCRTman The "moan" you hear is coming from the radiator fan. 95% of our buses are Gillig's and they are notorious for having the hydraulic driven radiator fan relays go bad. The sound is very distinct from the interior. It will have the same "moan sound" no matter what engine powers the bus. In the relay going bad, the fan goes into default "high speed mode" where it just runs at the same speed with the engine all the time. Its only supposed to go into "high speed mode' when the coolant temperature reaches 210 degrees F or more then go back to "freewheel" when it cools. From the outside it sounds like an airplane taking off when this happens. Sometimes it will go unnoticed and some buses will run loud for a while until a driver writes it up for excessive noise. They fixed this on the last year Gilligs with the hydraulic fans (2013) seeing as the relays never have gone bad (yet). The 2014 and up Gillig's have electric fans which seem to work just as well as far as keeping the engine cool, and much more quiet.

Greg Magee1 I looooove the hydraulic engine fans in Phantoms. I'm guessing you work for SamTrans. I can't stand those 2014 900's.
