    Can't remember where I read it now, but it was an internet short story I read a few years ago where the concept was, civilisations can go down different technology paths - turns out most Galactic Civs discover space, anti grav and FTL travel fairly early on, perhaps around the time of electricity, whereas for Humans we somehow managed to miss all that and got stuck on our one planet just racking up super advances in other areas - we then get invaded by a warlike civ of small space dog things that were dominating the other space faring races with tech basically equivalent to the 1800s - they then come out from their rickety spaceships with muskets, deploy in lines, shoot the human envoy coming to greet them as first contact and then get utterly smoked by all the human tanks and troops that had been deployed. Humans then reverse engineer this 'tech tree' they had been missing, and the space dog commander who had been injured/captured finally realises the mistake they had made - they had now unleashed/unlocked humanity from our prison and we were now able to go out amongst the rest of the galaxy and 'do our thing'. Great read, kudos to the author whoever you are.

      I read one short in an anthology in which an advanced military defeats the combined armed forces of earth in 25 minutes but during the ensuring occupation various humie entrepreneurs introduced the troops to the joys of buying on credit and gl;eefully accepted assault landers; tanks, and any other loose hitech off world gear as collateral - and swiftly foreclosed on such when payment went into arrears. In a year the earth had a spacefaring military ; in a generation had spread out across the empire and trashed the economy of untold planets what with items like land transports that rolled out with new models but few improvements every year... and in fifty years were running the show.

Still if you compare the current US Military to the Mongol Empire or the Roman Empire? With that perspective the current US Military is very polite and civilized relatively. It was a normal thing for the Mongols or Romans to completely exterminate everyone in a region...and the US has never done that. Normal as in not unexpected, but I have no idea how often either was angry enough to do genocide. RE Boogeyman Myth? Interesting choice of the term Thrax ... I'm a Thrax, born raised in Thrace, a Greek province. Thraxes AKA Thracians were indeed formidable warriors in our ancient past, indeed vicious by the account of other Greeks, but now we are a peaceful lot, rather simple in fact, mild tempered and polite. Only when Turks try to do something funny at the borders we get exited grub our guns and run to the border for a turkey shootout ... we are descendants of Ares after all... But if you ever come in Thrace you'll have the time of your life, mark my word.

      I was there in 1991. I can confirm the people were pretty damned chill.
      I was waiting on a bus for the driver, I was the only person on the bus which was supposed to be the last one of the day going from one town to the next. The driver walked out and looked in the door of the bus at me.
      " . . . it is late !" he said in English. I had spoken to him earlier, his English was quite good, he was about the same age as my father, and he had said that once he lived in America.
      I asked him what he meant. "This bus is late ! and maybe it will go tomorrow !'.
      I looked unhappy, and he said "It is good, we go tomorrow. Tonight is no good".
      I was a bit unhappy, and had no choice but to agree. I hopped out, put my pack on the ground and took out "Let's Go" to look to see if there was some back packers or pension in that place. He rolled a cigarette and said " Will you eat?".
      He took me to a private house, maybe his relatives?. They were not even a bit surprised, quite calm, and fed me. They gave me a kitten to play with in a very beautiful garden, full of spring blossoms on some REALLY big fruit trees ( maybe apricots or peaches.) and sweet-pea-flowers on dozens of trellises the women of the house had done a VAST amount of work in their garden, it was a work of great art and industry.
      They gave me a bed, and bitter black coffee, bread, fruit and butter all home made, for breakfast. Then he drove up all smiles in the bus quite early, and the Nanna of the house patted my cheek and told me I was a "good boy, and go with christ".
      :)
      I was a dumb 19 year old, I have often thought I should have kept their address, and sent them a letter when I returned home, and a Christmas gift to the Nanna for her kind heart.

Rome made sure of that... after defeating them in battle those who survived were sold as slaves in the 4 corners of the empire so they would never be ''Thracians'' again... a genocide!... just like Carthaginians... gone forever... docile Slavic groups were invited to use the Thracian land!... taking someone's land doesn't make you THAT person!... and another thing... the Thracians... were never Greeks!... just a neighboring nation... sometimes allied, sometimes not... DO NOT CONFUSE TODAY'S NAMING OF THE LANDS WITH THE ANCIENT TIMES... the Thracian ancient land you can find it in maps of that time... what's called ''Thrace'' today [east and west] is not what it used to be... just like Macedonia

There are tons of organisms competing for finite resources in any ecosystem creating an evolutionary pressure to be the better predator of the better survivor. This general theme is unlikely to be unique or special to earth, so it stands to reason humanish behavior in this context would be the norm. Animals compete for food, territory, rank in packs/herds, mating privileges, because other animals got to close and were taken as a threat or just plain annoyed the aggressor. All human like behavior, or should I say human behavior is animal behavior. If you compared humans and human society to every alien/alien society we’d probably be remarkably average.

    Someone should tell these authors what Sapian means, vs Sentient, which is what I think they mean.

    • @FamilyManMoving
      @FamilyManMoving Před 4 měsíci

      Sentience is the ability to have feelings; and Sapience extends beyond that into reasoning, intelligence and advanced conceptualization. Within this framework, dogs are sentient but not necessarily sapient. They have obvious emotions and can reason/problem solve to an extent. But they are not discussing the meaning of life or making plans for tomorrow. They live in the moment. (Which is why we love them.)

    • @beaker2000
      @beaker2000 Před 4 měsíci

      @FamilyManMoving you have it backwards. Sapience is the ability to know that fire is dangerous. Sentience is the ability to know that fire is dangerous and use fire as a tool. Only a Sentient species could build starship.

    Man, weird that in a universe where *physics is the same everywhere* and *chemistry is the same everywhere* , somehow evolution ended up going wildly differently in seemingly similar environments. In all likelihood the evolution of tool-using intelligence is going to follow a similar pattern anywhere in the universe because it all shares the same rules. The only way to get something wildly different is *a wildly different environment* . Considering our solar system has SEVEN such environments and not one produced complex life, let alone intelligent life, that provides a handy bound for exactly how "different" an environment would need to be before complex life re-appears: more different from Earth than every other planet in the solar system. That would mean any "very different" life would find our environment lethal and vice versa.

      It's not like there would be terms like 'obliterate', 'annihilate' and others that would be better suited. But when we live in the age of acronyms, it seems like we should be thankful that people can still use complete words and sentences instead of string of letters, even if they would use the wrong ones.

      Short stories like this have to pack a lot into a short time frame. If you want a more engaging story, try "the black ship." It's being written in real time and will offer you more than the short stories (15 chapters are currently available with more on the way).

      It's a one off story and the original author (who has deleted their account) unfortunately, didn't write any more parts.
      I could possible have a go myself at creating another part (I've done this on quite a few stories) If enough of you say "yes" I'll give it a go.
