    Poor little guy.. :( They are an endangered species and have an extremely high mortality rate in captivity, they are meant to be in the wild. In Indonesia they are doing the impossible to keep these beautiful creatures out of harm's way.

    Yeah, they're so much better off in the wild where their two sole concerns are A: figuring out where the next meal is coming from and B: making sure they're not something else's next meal. I know that generally keeps me at my happiest.

    Some Loris species are endangered because of the pet trade!
    Something you'll want to know if you find one as a pet - they mark their territory with urine; some wash their hands and feet in it and walk around. More commonly they lower their butt and urinate to mark as they walk.
    Also, to make this animal more "friendly" their teeth are removed without anesthesia. And a Loris can make their saliva toxic, causing anaphylactic shock!

    A comment mentions some animals need to be hand-raised and often end-up in sanctuaries: this is one of them. The 3 ioris species are strange, not only extremely social pets, but in the wild live in isolation (or small groups), so sanctuaries can be stressful.
    Their teeth are usually removed before sale, or else they can deliver a toxin (sucked from glands in the elbow); I know of no humane method of this removal yet, which poses dietary problems. Breeding programs (vs. importing) are needed.

    If these animals are endangered it would be best to keep them alive by raising them in captivity where they are not hurt.
    Hamsters are nocturnal and wild as well, no one complains about that.
    All animals were wild at some point. If the animal is being very well taken care of, gets proper food and a dark place to sleep; I see no problem with it.
    What is a problems are the illegal sellers and those who buy them illegally.
    Its not the obvious good owners who should be yelled at.

  • @Jamerson246
    @Jamerson246 Před 16 lety

    OK, hear me out here. Before you get a loris, think about the following.
    A pet loris is a bad idea. They are a wild animal, illegal to own, and despite their cute appearance they have several characteristics which make them a terrible choice for a pet.
    First of all, if you find a pet loris it will most likely have its canine teeth broken or pulled out by the seller so it can't bite. Having these teeth removed also means the loris will not be able to properly eat the foods it normally. peace

    No, jesko is right. Privately owning this animal is illegal, and most people who own one get them from traffickers who are often very cruel to these animals. They have a bite that is poisonous, sometimes deadly, to humans, and urinate very frequently to mark their territory. Humans are most often unable to provide the animal's natural diet, and for this and other reasons, they have an extremely high death rate in captivity. They are very cute, but just should not be kept as pets.

    All it takes to domesticate an animal is for it to be born in captivity.
    In which case it doesn't take "Generations" to domesticate a wild animal.

  • @bondgirlguo
    @bondgirlguo Před 15 lety

    You're right of course, ex-situ conservation is the only way for some highly endangered species. However, I believe that conservation should be handled by the experts, usually in zoos. This loris is now a pet and would be unsuitable for releasing back into the wild. Thus, I don't feel that laypeople keeping exotic pets is doing any good to those species' wild populations, although it may raise awareness via youtube cuteness!

    @turds4thewin Před 15 lety

    Aww cutie :)
    as for the comments about it should be in the wild well i somewhat agree. If you think about it all animals were wild at one time before becoming domesticated . and domesticated animals are far from extinct. Yet wild animals become extinct or close to it all the time.
    So i say well if the owner knows what there doing and are taking good care of it with kindness then why not?
    Id rather see it alive with people then dead in the wild.

  • @mrsmccloskey
    @mrsmccloskey Před 15 lety

    The threat brought on by keeping them as pets is largely on the human side since they are venomous and have extremely sharp canines (unless removed). The most serious threat to their species is from deforestation and urban sprawl.
    Also, at least by showing this video people start to learn this animal even exists.
